Arrest of the Murderer. Wm. Smith, the man who committed the murdurous [sic] assault upon Catharine Halpin, at the residence of Mr. John Price, in Vincennes on Wednesday evening the 28th ult., was arrested at ten o'clock on Friday last, nine miles from Smithland, Ky., (or 265 miles from this point,) by Mr. Wm. Miller of Vincennes, and Sheriff Kirkman, of Gibson county, who deserve great credit for the perseverance and sagacity displayed in the chase. ———————
Important Decision.
The New Albany Tribnne says that in t.he case of Lockwood v«. the State Bank of Indiana .Tndgt Bieknell gave a decision y*sifeeniay* He decide*! that the new silver Coin, Issued since 1S58, was not a legal tender, and furthermore, that a quantity of bank motet presented together for redemption atttst be considered as one do* mand, and if over 15, mu*t be paid in gold. A similar decision has been heretofore made by another Circnit Judge of Indiana.

The Overthrow of the Administration. Of all the parties which have existed since the organization of the Govern tato*, the present Democratic party is the only one which has lived, moved, and had its being by studiously practising deception upon the people. The late elections in Pennsylvania and Indiana have emblazoned this Cut beyond the possibility of doabt or qnenion. Daring the canviss, William EL English, Samoel S. Cox* Ow on Jones, and their aaeodatws, not only repudiated all their Kantaeiem, bat went step farther, by proclaiming their determination to advocate a modification of the present Tariff system.
Thst these gentlemen may see the light In which they are viewed by their Democratic brethren at the 8onth, we commend to their attentive phrasal the following remarks of the Montgomery (Alabama) Mail: ..
Xo one,-we preshme, says the Columbus "Enquirer, now doubt that tho Federal Administration has met with an overwhelming and irrevocable popnlar rebuke, that the next Honse of Representatives will contain a decHfd, majority of its opponents.'and that in all probability the party adhering to its fortunes is already "done for" in the prospective contest of L£60. The elections of CFIJS week in Pennsylvania, Ohio and Indiana, develbp these results. Instead of thirty Democrats to twenty-seven opponents, as in the pre? ent Congress, these throe States will probably return abont forty-five Opposition members to a dow»n Administration Democrats and the same popular feeling that has bronpht about this great change in them will without donbt operate similar results in other States whose elections are to follow.
Had there been an) substantial difference between the Administration candidates in the** Htates and their opponents, so far as questions touching the rights of the South arc concerned, we should have felt some regret at this signal overthrow of the "National Democracy," opposed to thorn as are in general' politics, and little fnith as we have in any of their professions or pledges. But wo believe that Mr. Florence, of Philadelphia, is the only Democrat elected to Congress in Pennsj'lvania, Ohio or Indiana, who has not openly deserted that feature of the English bill which reconciled the South to taking it as a bitter dose even with that palliaiw. All the rest—along with
name.

nll of those defeated—are distinctly pledged to go with the Black Republicans on the next Kansas issne to come before ongress. The contest, then, was simply one between two divisions of Freesoilers —tho one hoisting its true colors, the other flinging the same flag to the popular reeze. but displaying on tho side which in turned to the South a false and treacherous
When wo consider, also,
that most of the Democratic candidates all of them in Pennsylvania, wo believe— ere pledged to vote for higher protective tariff duties, it must be confessed that their pliability and inconsistency a* politicians a very far from recommending them to onr sympathy or condolonce in their defeat.
A OovRiuvoit NOM rtrasico.—The otlur ight a«the Ministers were rcturniue from Conference, on tho E. T. & Ga. Railroad, an amnsing occurrence took place between Govenor Brown and Parson Brownlow. Just bofore the cars arrived at Knoxvillw, Oovenor Brown came up, and taking the Parson by tho hand, remarked: "How do von do, brother Brownlow?— I am hnppy to see yon,''
Tho courtesy was returned, when the Govcnor continued "I hope yon will be moderate in *11 yonr notions of prop'icty in regard to your fellow-citizens—live a good christian and last, though not least, become a good Democrat,
Tho Parson with the eccentric look peculiar to himself, stretched himself up and remarked:
Govenor, an old gentleman of yonr polities, many hundred rears ago took our Savior npon a mountain and preached just such a sermon."
The outburst of laughter can better be itntnagincd than described.
jfJT Mr, B^lgood, the patentee of the celebrated Cona Tlanter of Cleveland, Ind., ia now stopping at the Clark House where a sample of the machine may he seen. It is unquestionably the beat eulti-
/arAccowling to the last ceaKfe*, the jp«»p^ittw of T«xaa 450,080.
An Anticipated Deluge.—At the end tff the fifteenth, and early in the six teenth cmitarj, 8taeffer, the celebrated astronomer, was Professor of Mathematics stfobi^feo. This emiflent man rendered great services to astronomy, sail-was ofle of the first who pointed out the way of remedying the error* in the Jalian cat endar, according to which time was then computed. Bat neither his abilities nor his knowle Ige could protect him against the spirit orhis age. In 1524 he pnblish ed the result of same abstruse calculations, in which he had been long engaged, and by which he has ascertained the remark* ble fact that in that same year the world wonld again be destroyed by a deluge.— This announcement, made by a man of such emiuenoe, and made, too, with the utmost confidence, caased a lively and universal alarm. News of the approaching event was rapidly circulated, and Europe was filled with consternation. To avoid the first shock, those trbo had houses by the aea, or on rivers, abandoned them while others, perceiving that such meas ures could only be temporary, adopted more active precautions. It was suggested that, as a preliminary step, the Emperor Charles Y. should appoint inspector to survey the country, and mark those places which, being least exposed to the coming flood, would be most likely to afford a shelter* That this should be dono, was the wi»h of tho Imperial General, who was then stationed at Florence, and by whose desire a work was written recommending it.
But the minds of men were too distracted for so deliberate a plan and besides, as the he'ght of the flood was uncertain, it was impossible to say whether ifc would not reach the top of the most elevated mountains. In the midst of these and svmtlar schemes, the fatal da/ chow near, and nothing had yet been contrived on a scale large enough to meet the evil. To enumerate the different proposals which were made and rejected, would fill a. long chapter. One proposal is, h^wpvelr'wortli noticing, because it was carried into effect with great steal, and is, moreover, .Vary characteristic of the age. An ecclesiastic ol the name of Auriol, who watithen Professor of Canon Law at the University W Toulouse, reyolved in his own mind va rions expedients by which this universal disaster miglit be mitigated. At length it occurred to him that it was practicable to imitate the course which, on a similar emergency, Noab had adopted: with eminent soccess. Scarcely was the ideS con ceived, when it was put into execution.— The inhabitants ofTonloiiSfe lent their aid and an ark was built, in the hope that some part, at least, of the human specics might be preserved, to continue the r«ce, and re people the earth, »fter the waters should have subsided and the land sgain become dry.—Buckle's History of Civilization.
GOOD COTTON PICKINOKOR AI.ABAKA.— Four hands belonging to Caspar Jones and Dr. Batt Peterson, of Barbour county Alabama, on a wager lorn Christmas egg nog, on Thursday, Septembe r7th, picked, from sunrise to sunset, as follows Dr. Peterson's boy Green 6(8 pounds,
Ike 636
C. W]j Jones' Warren 682 girl Milly 672 Cl This is an average to each hand of 652 pounds, and what is rather remarkable, th* contestants tied, having 1304 pounds each
Several neighbors of the highest respectability were in the field while the hands w*»rc picking, and two of them weighed the cotton.
