O'Hkrra's Cotillon Band —One of the most prominont features of tho Fire men's Ball on Tuesday last, was the ex cellent music and milling furnished by
Harm's String Baud. Good music adds at least one half to the enjoyment of dancing, aud in fact to everything else of which it forms a part. A theatre without a good orchestra lose* half of its attrae tions—but in this particular our friend Varney, of tho "Gaieties" is fortunate, having secured the services of this band.
The leader of this band is one of the best ••cfcHers*' h» the State, and with good music and tho go*i calling a party cannot bnt pass off pleasantly. We hope to we t^li band engaged upon all occasions, and Ve feel perfectly safe in the prediction that hereafter a party will not be considered as weH managed if th*ir services are not se-
it We are pleased to ledrn that Mr. Joseph Hudson, an old and well known musician, has connected himself with this hand. He played with them for tb» first time at National Hall, ea Toeeday night last.
VtnootA SALT.—Thi Hichmonl Knqnirer says there is one square mile ot land between Smyth and Washington counties, Virginia, on the north fork of the Holston rirer, which ia worth more than the whole valuation of the city of New York. The salt rock within tbis mile range* from seventy to one hundred feel in thkknces, which wonld yield a net ton or fbrty bosheis of salt to er«ry yard it contains or over three thonaand millio&s of ba»hels, which, when mannfactnred, worth from forty to fifty cents a hosbel. Bnt presuming it to be worth twenty eta. per busihe) in the gronnd, and we have six hnndred »UHoi» of dollars! to which we w«ai add two hundred and fifty millions tons of plaster, within the same space, worth in the gttwnd aboot one dollar per ton, make a total of eight bwedred and ffty mB lions of del tare
The Boy Murderers Found Guilty. The lads charged with murdering Hugh Downey, the Macoopin drover in a fct. Lonis barber shop, have be*n found guilty as will be seen by the following, from today's St. Lonis Republican:
MCXOEE I* TH* -FIRST DEQUE.— The Jury in the case of the State against Niek Traatwein and Antoine Leite, indicted with Theodore Debold at the Criminal Conrt for the murder of Hngh Downey, in May last, returned a verdict last evening of "Guilty of murder in the first degree." The Conrt room was well filled, and it conld not bnt be observed that the verdict, just thongh it was, and consistent with the law and the evidence, was received with many indictations of sot row and of sympatby for the youthful murderers. It is not at all probable they will be banged.— No donbt the Judge, Jury, prosecuting counsel, and all the officers into whose hands the case in its different stages has been placed, will sign a petition to the Governor for executive clemency. For our own part, we must confess that to onr mind the contemplation of the terrible deed, the particulars of which had occupied the Court since Friday morning last, is sad enough, and bears sufficient of a lesson, without the awful consequence of an execution. The murder was one of the most fctrocious in the annals of crime even in these criminal days, and exhibited a depravity of youth absolutely shocking, but it would certainly subserve no spirit of revenge, it would gratify no wish of the family of the dead Downy, to condemn those boys to death, and it is even questionable whether it would be attended with beneficial influence on the rising generation. We presume it was in contemplation when a severence of the prisoners was granted to enter a nolproa in the case of Theodore, the youngest of the three.— For although he was not used as a witness against the others, it was through his confession that the scoret of who committed the murder was divulged.
This case should be an awful warning to youth, teaching them that the love of money is the root of evil. It shonld teach them to try to be satisfied with the station in which they may bo placed, however irksome it appears or however hard a master they may have, that getting m«ncy honestly is the best way that avarice leads to cheating, cheating to robbery, robbery to murder, and murder to an ignoble doath, or a life of ignominy and shame.
