THR ATLANTIC CABLE.—A despatch from Newfomi'lland announces the arrival at 8t. John'* of Mr. Lundy, an English electrician who had been sent over by tbo board of directors of the Atlantic Telegraph Company for the purpose of testing the cable vriih improved batteries and new instruments. A specified timo had been agreed opon before his departure from England, but between himself and the electricians at Valenta Bay, at which it was intonded to mnko the experiment.* and iu his dispatch to Mr. i'ield. from Halifax, he speaks hopefully of the prospects of success. He says: "Tbo conductor is not broken," and "it is possible by sending a certain kind of electricity to improve the insolation, and thus the difficulties may be overcomo for ft time."
jtgrThe DemocrAcy inflicted divers p«n ishtiK'ti*.* upon our neighbor of tbo Democrat for hi* denunciation of Lccomptonisni. He afterwards became very silent npon the scbject, but they continued to punish him still. Wo have heard of on old Dutchman, who whipped his boy for swearing at him. The whipped boy still rorsed, aud the father whipped him again. Turn the spunky little chsp was silent, but/voiW an if he had the devil in him.— Thereupon the old fellow applied the whip once more to his shoulders, exclaimed, "you don't sav nothing,

Extract of a Speech Delivered at Philadelphia toy P. S. White Mr. Buchanan's prototype oncd took ¥nr Saviour bp l'hfo an exceeding highj mountain and offered him all the land aronnd him, ff he wonkl kneel dowti and worship hitD) but oor JBavionr said to him aft Sansks said to ten-cent Jimmy, '«t thee behind me Satan.' Now, gentlemen, how do you suppose old Bnck and his fawns, who have erooked the pregnant hinges of the knee, that thrift nrght follow fawning, are to get ont of this Kansa* imbroglio I'll tell yon. They are gotag tt lie themselves ont of it.— They are going to admit Kansas ax a Free State, and swoar at the same time they never intended her to be anything else. Mr. Buchanan will set the He to music dnb it 'TheKansas Policy with variations,' get Toombs of Georgia to play it on the banjo, and compel all his northern slaves to dance it as merrily and as faithfully as so many negroes at acorn huoking.
Is it any harder to lie out of that than it was for Mr. Buchanan, Dallas & Co., to lie ont of and to vote for the Tariff of 1846, in the very teeth of their speeches in favor of the Tariff of 1842 Is it harder for Mr. Buchanan to lie himself and his party not of that sad mistake to please the North, than it was to lie himself and hi* Cabinet ont of bis instructions to Governor Walker to please the South? Is it harder to lie himself ont of his pledges for retrenchment and reform before his election to tickle the North, than it was to He himself out of the fact, that after the election he has increased the expenditures of the Government over fifty millions of dollars to satisfy the demands of the Sooth? No, gentlemen, not a particle. It is just as easy for these Locoioco tricksters to unravel such dilemns as it was for Alexander to untie the Gaidian knot, or as it will be to convince those thirty-five Native Americans who have lately been at work in the Nsvy Yard, with the view of getting the Sprogell vote, that their hervices will not be required after the election. Practice makes perfect and no one will deny that a vast amount of experience in that way attaches to this slavery-defending, ballot-box-stuffing, nullifying and colonizing free trade party. I say free trade party because it dare not be anything else on the floor of Congress The Northern section of it would fain come out for protection to the free labor of the North, but the Slave party scowls upon the thought and these Northern terrapins draw their heads within their Democratic shells, and are as silent as the grave. When the great heart
of Pennsylvania with a feeling of pride for her inexhaustible mineral resources, and.threatens to demanu earnestly the protection necessary to their successful developement, the JDemociatic Janu.ses promise a 'judicious tariff," but on the floor of Congress they meet the Southern lash, and, by obedience, perpetuate tbo authority of their Southern masters. Working men I if tbo Democratic party want protection to American labor why don't they give it to you? They have tho power to do so, why don't they do it They have the power of the tyrant, why, in the name of down-trodden humanity, will they continue to use it so tyrannously They deceived you in 1882 they deceived you in 1840, and they will continue to deceivd you as long as indifference, marks your agency at the ballot-box.
You know, experience cannot fail to have taught you, that you may not expect anything from the Democratic party. You know that the dignity of labor has been growing small by degrees and-sadly le«s, from the administration of the Hero of tho Hermitage to the present hour.—You know that a large portion of the Irish, and Qcrmans of this cbun»ry—I will not say the more degraded portion of th m, are attached to, bound, fettered and rivited to Locofocounv and no power, save the distant will that rulos tk»m, will ever estrango them from that congenial association. Ephraim is joined to his idols, and he will worship them though tho heavens fall. -...
Are Literary Men Good Husbands. This question has, ot late, been ttinch nnder discussion. In regar«l to it an English writer disconms as follows: "Sir Welter Scott was a liteitry iron of the very highest class a man who tried many departments of writing and succeeded in them all—and he was married for thirty years, made a lore match, and was happy in tbe marriage state.
