lUIVEY D. »COTT.

The friends of Mr. Scott most not be Idle Mtj. Hundred* of rotes may be made bj Inducing the ndifferent to rote. A strong effort will be made to defeat hiln, bat if the people will only look at the merit* of the two candidates, it certainly cannot require much meditation to decide which way to vote. Mr. 8cott has lived amongst us for years. As an apprentice to the carpenter trade, he was faithful and honest. As a journeyman carpenter, be was indostrious and honest. As a professions! student, he was stndioos and honest. As a professional man, he h*s been faithfnl to his clients, courteous to witnesses, and honest in his intentions. As an official character, he has endeavor* ed to s*rve the interests of his constitnents, to the best of his abilities, an) as a citizen he has no superiors for kindness being ever ready to lend a helping hand to the need}. He is Harvey D. Scott, at home and abroad—in his office or on the street. Whether a candidate or no candidate, he is Harvey Scott still. Nature made him what he is, and being prood of Iter work does not seek to change him in any particular.

Misfortune, in her ruthless tread, has not failed to cast her chilly and un welcome mantle over his little household, whieh tortnros the mind of an enterprising and industrious man more than death itself. When the character, standing, and untarnished name of Harvey D. Scott stand so pnro and spotleis bofore the people of Vig« county, how is it possible for thorn to look on with cold indifference Can one man be fonnd who will refuse to vote for him through tho influcnco of Mr. Bosworth, just bcc»ose he did not get the nomination Wo hope not. Wo think better of the cltizons of Harrison township. Is there one who will refuse to vote for him, because Da vies Johnson's nnme was not proposed to tho Convention We think no'. If Mr. Johnson had desired his name to go before that Convention he mighthave ahked a friend to attend to it. These things are mere quibbles—they are scarcely worth talking about, but inasmuch as every man must have some influence, it is necessary to watch the jealout as well as the regular drilled enemies. So look out.

Harrison Township.

There is no doubt but that the fight for the Anti-Leeompton Ticket will have to be made in thh township, and we now ask evory friend to that ticket, to come out and go to work honorably and fairly, but with a determination to overthrow the prospects of the Administration men who are seeking to impose upon the voters of Vigo county by asking their suffrage as anti Lecompton Democrats, when they know that if they succeed in having the people endorse them that it will also be virtually endorsing the administration.— Do yon want to see Buchanan Democrats elected? Never I Then you must go to work, and keep at it until the last vote is cast. Remember that eternal vigilance is the prico of liberty, and that wheat is only worth seventy-five cents.

jtsr The rate of travel of the comet is eomputed to be about 160,000 miles per hour, at which rate the distance between Boston awl San Francisco round Cape Horn (10,000 miles) would be accomplished in four minute* or between New York and Liverpool in one minute and six seconds. The telegraph had better break.

MB. EITTOB.—Very

much to my regret

1 was unable to attend the Concert at the Female College on Friday evening. 1 *as happy to hear from msfay of whom I inquired, that they were highly pleased, and enjoyed the "repast exceedingly.*'— fcnt I see by the critic of the Express that they were enjoying A repast that was not very scientific. "Lorgnette.the critic, says there was a "large snd appreciative audience." How mortified must the audience become to learn that their "appreciative" qualifications were crude and uncultivated, that they were enjoying a repast that did not possess much artistic merit.

I hsve heard much said in praiee of Miss Newby's musical ability, but "Lorgnette** disposes of her by a process of critical surgery tbst causes an unsophisticated individual like the undersigned, to inquire what is there left of Miss Newby?— "Lorgnette" says that she cannot render the exquisite touches upon "lofty heights of soand" like Sontag, or descend like Madame Thillon, that she does not sing "eon gratia or eon exprettione," that she "wants cultivation," her "cadences are mesgre," "must practice her scales," "must not slur over her delieate notes or jumble them," "must not neglect the soft shsdes of sound," that she "did not make a single shake," and did not perform the "mordenteWhat the "mordente'' is, Mr. Editor, I have not the least idea in the world, but suppose it is something difficult—perhaps terrible 1 I think it unreasonable in "Lorgnette" to expect Miss Newby 10 perform the "mordente," when she fails in so many particulars criticised by "Lorgnette." The "appreciative audience'* mnst have been at fault if Miss Newby was so deficient. The principal merit attributed to Miss Newby by "Lorgnetto" is "vocsl power and energy.' I have seen ox-drivers who possessed the same merit.

If tho criticism of "Lorgnette" is cor-, rect, Mr. Covert must have greatly overlooked tho interests of the College by employing a person as toacher, whose most Appropriate placo would be among the pupils. I am told, however, that persons accustomed to visiting concerts, becoirte familiar with musical terms, and by .using them flippantly in connection with the names of great masters, may astonish unsuspecting people with the appearance of an exalted musical discrimination.

I am amused at the talent exhibited at this Concort as portrayed by "Lorgnette" who classifies it as "vocal power and en"gTace," and "some

ergy, fliitus." A combination of such wonderful aquiroments composed a "Grand Concert,'* which "Lorgnette* begs may be repeated. This reminds me, Mr. Editor,* of-two gentlemen of the 'Lorgnette' spe-

cies, your city, who one© spoke in

glowing terms of a Concert, the great

attractive features of which, according to proved appearance, when he readily accounted foritbv nscribingitto tue virtuesot rrof. VVood their conclusions, were the performance 'Ute^torative. We shall try that next—
