Jllie Union is very fierce]y opposed to an elective Judiciary by party vote, yet the editor is an earnest advocate of the -election of Cowqjll by the K. N. Republican party What consistency !—Jour* nal.
That is just about tlio depth of yonr ufca# MBecatiso the Americana phifer Mr. Cowgill to Mr. Claypool, you think we are favoring the election of a Judge "by a party vote." Well, now, that is strange tloctrine We urge Mr. Cowgill's claims because he is an anti-Lecornpton man— because ho is opposed to the present administration—because he is capable and honest, and is uninfluenced by party—becanse he has proven himself to be a good and an impartial Judge, having held the Judgeship of the Cotumon Pleas Court of 1'utnam County with honor to himself and the community, for sonic time. Wo support hitn because he is not the nominee of tho Administration party, which is cnongh to show that he will not be influenced by that party, when it is a wellknown fact that a certain candidate for Justice of the Peace, on tho Democratic ticket last May, said that every Democrat was pledged to each other, to uphold and protect one another upon all occasions, and tinder tdl circumstances, EVEN AT THE IIAZA.RD OP LAW AND OF JUS••••••TICK and "this they would do in spite of the J)evU.''r~,$ovr then, if this is the kind of pledge you Democrats are wotking under, yon are more dangerous than any political party that has ever banded together in this or any other country. The Cat Let Loose.
jfcfThe so-called an ti-Lecompton party of Vigo county has placed a ticket in tlie field and are strong! urging anti-Le-compton Democrats to the support of that ticket. Secrest takes the lead and is afraid to defend the position he occupies and dares not say one word of consolation for his God-father, James Buehanan. The ranting and blnstering anti-Lecompton (in a horn) Col. Gookerly is mum on both points, and ditto all the balance.
Now ire shall take the privilege to ask, if these candidates have been actually placed upon an anti-Lecompton platform, and they are opposed to the present ad' ministration, why has it become necessary for our Post Master to follow up these candidates and make a speech at each stopping place, in defence of the adminis* tration? Does it not show that this party is endeavoring to deceive the people?— Does it not show that the candidates are afraid to do the dirty work for which they have been employed and have taken this plan to dcubly deceivo the people.— While they are courting the favors of the anti-Lecompton Democrats, they eon secretly refer the Lecompton men to the speech of Mr. Gornwoll, for consolation, and opetdy and loudly deny having anything to do with Mr. Corntfell or his position. This is a beautiful game—how interesting it mnst bo to those who thus seek to dcccive tho people. We also understand that Mr. Vorhess has beon engaged for this purpose^ We are sorry to hoar that either of those gentlemen have consented to lend their influence for the accomplishment of such abase and decep livo purpose—wo had thought better of them—but they must explain this matter before the people can recall their former goad opinion. The trick is now visible and known, and they mast abide tlie con Bcqucncea.
This fact, alone, is enough to convince every man in tho county that Secrest, Cookerly & Co., are regular old Liners, died in the wool—Bnchanan-Lecompton Democrats—and nothing else I Look at it—while one butters the bread, the other licks it off, and the crust is thrown to the duped voter, who is foolish enough to believe that, by following them up a little longer,
Am
butter will como after a while.
Oh! silly, Billy thought. Turn your backs- upon thejn at once, and let them perish in thoir own xinwopt and unsung. '.?!».*•
/EiF The Union in comparing the nominees for the County Treasurshi'pi calls Col. Cookerly an Office-seeker! That's rich If our memory serves as right there is not a greater office-seeker in tho county than Mr. Scott^He takes anything, whether profiored by KnOw-Nothings or Republicans. Look at the facts, Mr. Brown.^-—Journal,
Well, then we are pretty certain that he will take the office of Treasurer of Vigo county, inasmuch as it is "proffered" by both together, this time. So there is no use in yonr crying over it, your candidate is a "gone np community."
Now, as to Scott being an office-seeker, the truth will not bear yon out in that assertion, for he has lived in Vigo county for noarly thirty years, and he has held four offices, and has not been beaten even ono time, whilo Cookerly has been here bnt little over half thai time, and has been a candidate about—well, it is hard to tell, now, as some of our oldest citisons quit keeping tionnt about four years ago, and tho actual nttmber of times is not known. This much is known, however, that he was a candidate Jifteen times in thirteen years and was elected three times Janes, which of the two shonld you take to be an oSice-soeker tJ^Oorae now, be honest for once, if you do belong to the Democratic party.

HOME WITHOUT A MOTHER.
What is home without a mother What are all the joys we meet When her loring smile no longer
Oroete the coming of our feet 1 The daw are long, the nights are drear, And time rolls slowly on And oh how few are childhood's pleasures,
When her gentle care is gone. 4i
Thtngs we prize are first to vanish, Hearts we love, to pas* away And how soon, e'en in our childhood,
We behold her turning grey. Her eye grows dim, her step^is alow Her joys of earth are past, And befare we learn to know her,
She hath breathed ou earth her last,
Older hearts may have their sorrows Griefs that quickly die away But a mother lost in childhood
Grieves that heart day by. day. We missher kind and w.illing hund, Her fond and earnest enre And Oh S how drear is life around ue-^

I must confess that no ono thing impresses mo so much with
a
sense of divine or

"A great waKto" is the expanse of water that chafes the "vexed Beriuoothes" or lies swimming under a tropic sky. But for inland the'heart of the eonntinont pants for its blessing, and the stately forests sigh for it through all their leaves and to-morrow this outlying element that quivered like motion lead or dashed in feathery foam has descended on the lawns of England, the vineyards of the Rhine, and the wheat fields of the West. It has touched with tender coolness the wide pra* irie, and it opens its lids, more innumerable than the eyes of Heaven. The humble plant lifts up its greatful head, as though felt God's care for it, and the orchard

Two years ago we commenced bosineas in Terrellante under very favorable drcnm^-tances. in the no-aesaion of fucilities seldom eajoyed by any.— In that short space of time we hare eata&ished a Dry Goods House worthy of Terre-Haute. The exiraordinary increase in oar bamness requires more spacious salesrooms. With that end in view we have secured the aboye oorner, which we are now fitting np in magnificent style, with reference lo the comfort ot our customers: and for capacity it will far surpass any Dry Goods House in TerreHaute. We have also engaged the servieM of severel aocomplUhed salesmen who will st all tiara be found at their post, ready to wait on all,* and in any language.
