TEItRE-HAUTE.

FRIDAY MORNING, OCTOBER 1, I85&

For President in iftoo:

JOHN J. OHITTBNDBN Of Kentarkv.

We'll ask anothor: If Douglas, Wise, Walker, of Borne other good popular sovereignty Demo* crat, from the North or South, in nominated (or the Presidency in I860, and Crittenden, Bel), Seward or Fremont is nominate.! in opposition, which will yon «npj»ort? Or would yoa, nnder any circnmataneos, support a Democratic nominee?— Journal

We have answered the first question more than a month ago, plainly and emphatically,

In solation to the la*t question, we are free to say, that there might be such a posnibility as oar supporting—^W whom we j'lease. We never shall snpport extreme men of any party under any circnmstancos, and for the sake of inexpediency.— When we give any man onr support, we mast have confidence in him—we have none in such men as Buchanan, and but precions little in Doaglas, yet we wonld prefer his election to Congress over Lin coin, for the simple reason that Douglas has been soft? and Lincoln is for tale. We know the purchasers of Douglas, and it is extremely doubtful whether Lincoln will sell out to Seward, Groely & Co., or to some Prince or Potentate, «.

9flP The Journal is sorely troubled at Domocrats

Toting

for Davis. Party oi-

ganieation is what is claimed mast be ad hered to when the Convention that nominated 8 ccrest,.refused to endorse Douglas and Davis, as of the truo faith. Why does not the Journal pitch into Dr. Read, a candidate

for

Representative? The Doc

tor was a member of that Convention and was a defeated aspirant for the

nomi-

nation. Mo bolts that Convention and supports Davis, Id some of his friends claim to gethiiri the vot& of Davis'friends. Yet 6lhor» the 8eere8t men claim that he will voto for Secrest. Mum is not tho word, speak tent It wont do to carry water on both shoulders. If Bead is

for

known

that he bolts one

Convention, that wonld not nominate and stand by another -Convention that did nominate.* jjLet it bo known how and where he l&nds, that a question of faith may be tested betroen him and others.

'It J££T James B. Edmunds oditor of the Journal, charges the Maine Liquor Law, on the "Know Nothing Republican Legislature of 1855." What impudence! He was a Know Nothing then himself, the bwearer in and expert manipulator. He was an advocate of the Law, and took a paying office nnder it. The democrats are responsible for it, because of his and other deserters connected with them.—

And did not a democratic Governor approve the law?

A few days since three prisoners

escaped from the Columbia county, jail, (Wis.) when a prisoner convietod of mnrder was aUowed, after urgent entreaty, to start in pursuit of them,on the promise that he would return* which promise he faith* fully kepfcr1 Another prisoner was dis* patched on one of the Sheriff's horses to notify Deputy Sheriff of the escape of the rogae*X«* We do not think that each incident could occur anywhere except at tho West, and we hardle think it conld be safdy repeated even there.

We learn from St. Louis that the

specie basis has neen virtually abandoned In that city, and that all btwines* Is now transacted upon the currency basis, as in Cinoiuna&i and Louisville. The quotation for bills, exchange and produce, will hereafter he understood accordingly.— Notes of St. Louis city banks, will command a pmnfaia la that market, being of «qoal rftlee with go Id.

A* btrvKtiMT Qtmnr.—The New York Day Book eagre, there are so less than «tf respectable gentlemen who claim to he the originate* of the Atlantic Telegraph pro* jeot, and in queries whether they have got logo through aoekbrntiott for each owe?

to prevent any unpleasant language, or other offensive conduct among the patients. They are distributed into different wards, those being nearest alike aa to the extent and nature of their malady, being placed together. The wards are constructed all on the same plan, except thso for basement patients. They each consist of a oroad and spacious ball, like the saloon of a river steam boat, with sleeping rooms arraoged on each side, and a plain parlor looking out upon the farm and a Library room neatly furnished and carpeted, which answers the double purpose of a Library, and a reception room to the wards, for special friends of the patients. Thete libraries aro valuable, in jnst the degree that they are readable. I do not knov who selected the books, bnt one must feel amused to examine the kind of literature they contain. Were I going to examine a library of some old fogy iron side preach er, I should expect to find just such works. they are mostly of the mist staid and matter-of-fact productions such as works of history, science and religion. The idea of giving a crazy person Bnnyan's Pilgrims Progress, D'tVubigne's History of the Reformation, or any similar works to read, is absurd. If Da. ATHOK conld have his way, (which lie ought to, in the matter,) he would take these libraries to the second hand bookstore, and select some woiks that the patients could and would read. There -ought to be works prepared on purpose for thcra. They ought not to be printed in book form, bnt arranged like a map, to hang by the wall, They should be of the serio-comic, mingled with poetry, and illustrated with flashy cuts. Then tjie naturally romantic turn of mind of tho patient would make him read it. The history of Jack the Giant Killer, with cuts—or Gullivors travels, "illustrated by Brady," would be much more appropriate reading material than metaphysical disquisitions, on the natural depravity of* the human heart, or the doctrine of justification by faith alone. The usual manifestations of insanity consist in great mental anxiety, and melancholy. A large majority of the inmates of those Institutions, feel that life has qo more pleasure for tbem, aud any means which can call off their minds from themselves, should not be spared. I did'not notico a single daily newspaper, taken on ppipose for the use of the wards. It must be evident tb every

that it would

be only right to provide abundance of this style4tf literature for them, whieh can be done so easily. The commissioners should authorise Dr. Athon* to subscribe regularly, for every paper of any importance in the State, and arrange them on reading raoks, in the wards, S3 that the patients from the different sections could see the news from their homes. Then, to place a few copies of the home Daily's at tho disposal of each ward, every day, conld not help but prove sanative. The Superin tend ant has been trying to do all in his power to furnish both ccmforts and amusements for those under his charge and it is to be hoped the Commissioners will confer onr him the privilege aforesaid.—•

f^fWhat right has the State to aak the printer to give his paper to the Institution? The truth is the printer is not well enough paid at the best, and I should like to know how the public Improvements of this, or any other State, could be effected in the absence of news papers. Printer's ink is the cement by which the ntegral elements of the State are held together, and the nourishment without which public or private enterprise must languish, or entirely perish. It is time the printer should be better appreciated.— The sleeping aparlmonts are ananged for the greatest comfort possible, as well aa safety. When the patients retire, their door* aro locked from the outside, and all their wearing apparrel taken out oftheir rooms, to they can neither injure their clothes, nor mm them i» a means of doing themselves harm* The bed* are all comfortable and clean, aad there is nothing offensive to tho ceases, ia any of the ward* above tho basement. Almost every day the halls are washed, during the varan weather, aad all times of the year the patients an required to take a tub hath twice a week.
