We s^e nothing strange is this—it in perfectly plain. That old sow has had a tremendous litter otpigg, and every tin. gCe one of them are Democrats, anl Mr. DaI vis seeing that they were of the Buck cross, entered his protest against the privileges ,*nd assumptions of the new family, upon wfcicli the old sow bnt gave a familiar gmnt ^whon the Utile pigs set too and rooted Mr. outside of "the pile of Democracy."—
However, this was done in rather a Se.cr*(*)t way, yet all "outside of the pale of -Democracy" could see that the whole af|fair was a teggish one. Since this bristling scrape Mr. B. has learned that thes9 pigs .have enten up the old sow, and be has no ^occasion to resurecthcr memory. Jp*,\

The Great Comet lias at I*ast been
It is annonnced by the last arrival from Europe that the great Cornel of Charles V., which has been snxiously looked for by astronomers for two years, has at las! made Its appearance, and has been seen at the Pari# observatory, and is pronounced by the observers to be the genuine thing. It will a»on be visible to the naked eye:
It is not yet known whether It will appear as it once did, like a very, large, and bright star, or with a tail 100 degrees in length. The curious hope that it will its "wondrous tale unfold.*' It* first appearance was in 1264, and its disappearance took place on the 25th of October of th*t year, the day on which Pope Urban IV died, as the world thought in strange coincidence. In 1556 it re-ap-peared, and was observed by Paul Fabri cos, astronomer to Charles V., who executed a map of its path, which was pub Hsbed in November of that year. It was then described as a great and brilliant star. Its course was "through Virgo and Bootes, past the pole of the heavens, into Cephens *nd Cassiopea." The celehra ted Br. Halley calculated its elements more than a century afterwards, and several others after him. The calculations of Mr. Bomme, of Middleburg, of the Netherlands, of recent dat«." are more precie and are generally supposed to be more reliable- than thoSi of his predecessors.— This astronomer finally came to the conclusion that in the year 1264 its eclipse had a period of 110,644 days, or 302,922 year, expedited by planetery disturbances by 5,077 days, and that in 1856 its mean motion corresponded to a period of 308,* 169 yr»ars. Its present revolution he ealcula'ed would be shortened by perturbations 10,40 yesrs, and the comet should reach its perihelion about tho.2d of August 1858. ... ':'f„
Scene in a Court House—An UnrjTj accountable Panic.
A correspondent of tbe Fairmont True Virginian gives an amusing description of a singular sceno, which occurred last FH day, in the Marion County Court House
Mj. FVH. Pierpoint sat in rather a re cumbent position," with the back of his chair against the enormous stove near the clerk'** desk. From the stove ascends perpendicularly to'the ceiling a stove pipe of great length. Some one, perhsps Mr. Watson, the clerk, halloed to Mr. P. to take care, or the stove would be upset whereupon Mr. Nesson and Mr. Haymond rather abruptly and loudly seconded Mr, VVatson and, as if to asuist in creating alarm, the stove pipe rattled against the ceiling. Like lightning Mr. Pierpoint sprang from his scat, ran across the room, and jumped out of the window head fore most. A panic immediately seized all— a moist unaccountable panic home one said the ceiling was about to fall this capped the climax, every ono took tQ his heels Judge Camden jumped up on the window sill, the clerk tumbled out of the window next his desk Messrs.
EI B. HHII,
A. S. Hayden, GK B. Camden, Jr.,'-Alli-son Fleming, W. H. Thompson, and Ellery R. Hall, all made for one window, and panio stricken, like a flock of sheep, tumble*! out hoels over head after ,JMr. Pierpoint—some on their hands, some on tho backs of friends, and all presenting most ludicrous appearance as they rotlei about the court house yard to the great terror of the young ladies enjoying the "alfresco" of the jail porch, convenient to the window. John Kean, as if the devil was at his heels, made for the door, upset two old men, who yelled terrifically in the hall, cleared the railings in the yard, and never looked back until ho got to the other side of the street. Meanwhile, others fell upon their knees and prsyed, some were petrified with fear and others stood aghast with wonder. In about five minutes, however, tho whole scene ended. The stove did not fall, the stove pipe stood erect, the ceiling was firm loud laughter succeeded despair, good humor ouce more prevailed, and every one, looking a little foolish and a great deal pleased, took his seat as before, and th* business of the court went on as usual.

TOBASOO AID CORK IS VIKOMIA^—The Petersburg Itttelligi-tteer says: The quanthy of tobacco made last yesr in Virginia tad North Carolina, judging from the inspections up to t|e 1st of thi» mmth, will fully equal t^ moftsanguile expectations. Although the season for delivering is so far advanced, the receipts in this city and Richmond are atill heavy. The aggregate inspections ia the State, on the 1st of October, will in all probability reach, or very nearly reach, 79,000 bhda., at all events tbe exc«s» over last year will be folly 10,000 hbd*.
We are in the midst of a pretty severe drought. A fortnight's uninterrupted and excessive heat baa made an impression npon the corn crop in this vicinity, wb ieh it will be hard to recover from, even with a good rain or two in the course of the present week, which at present there is bnt a faint prospect of. But unless it comes the yield will be seriously diminished.— There is no virtue in prognostics, for we have had in the last few d«vs cloudy mornings and evenings with eastern winds that gave the most tantalizing promises of soaking showers. It is an old saying that all signs fail in dry weather, and experience abundantly verifies it. We shall not expect rain until we see it falling.
The Uncounted Vote in Kansas.
The Lawrence Republican gives a list of returns from fourteen polls not included in' the Commissioner's statement, embracing an aggregate vote of 1,243— 171 for, ana 1,072 against the English proposition. Thus amended, the total vote woald stand 1,969 for, to 12,372 against it— making the free State majority 10,413. The supposition of the Republican is, that these returns either did notreacK tho Commissi oners, or-were rejected on account of informality yet theo make no mention of any one of the localities named.
