We 3 had almost forgotton to mention our old friend Col. Drake, whoso head has become somewhat whitened by tho frosts of time since we used to moot him on the streets of
IndiAQapolis, iu our boy-hood d»ys, lie has been a staunch spoke in the progreasire wheel of the Capital, and we say may he live to see it revolve many times more.
The travel over tho Torre- Llaute and Richmond road is immense—whole families teem to ho paying their visits now, I before the winter sets in. We noticed one man and woman who seemed to have •••& charge of about tw«nty fio« children. Tho *3 man took a stand between this generation, 4? and kept turning from one fide to the other, as if set on a pivot, bisily engaged in "j watching the youngsters whilst they slept in their soats. Fearing, perhaps, of their falling out, straying off, or some stranger faking one of them purposely or through a mistake—don't know which. But there •sf i* one thing certain, this man actually -I flood up almost the entire distance from
Indianapolio to Terre-fiaote, not sitting |j down to excoed three times, nor more •*$ thag five minutes at a time, so hawk*like watchful was he over his numerous house & hold.
The officer* on this road, are tmly model business men, and were all the western roads blessed with officers sustaining such irreproachable characters as those on the T. II. A Richmond road, we would hear of no difficulties npon any of them. This road i« always i« good repair—the Kngineers always sober and ready for doty at the tap of the bell With snch men to mat51 ago the affairs, no tompany can help hot prosper «nd glide along in peace and harmony*
LosasTtrr.—Th© Counter Dowager of Hardwicke, who recently died in England jg At the age of 95, was tho daughter of the fiftk E\rl of Balcarres, who at the age of 60 married her mother. l*ady Haidwicke was therefore able to say her father *as

The cemetery is divided into two division#, the lower one of which is almost destitute of vanlts or tombs, and tho«e interred there are placed, in dry weather, about a foot under gronod, the dirt thrown on top not more than coverd ing the coffin. fcnnce the recent heavy rains, the whole place is flooded, mote or less, and looks more like a swamp than a cemetery. At laat it was shoved in, and the spade of one of the negroes held it until the other threw in largo quantities of hard mud, which served as a weight to keep the head down. Crime in Ireland,
The Inspector* General of prisons in Ireland have issued their reports for the last year. Theyt-ay: "Fqr six successive yeais the Iiispectors-tjreweral of Prisons have recorded a large and progressive decrease in crime in Ireland, and fori he year 1857 we are happily enabled to make a similarly gratifying report. Bat, although the decrease in the aggiegate in 1857, taken in proportion with the diminished numbers, is fully equal to that in the year immediately pteoeding, yet in its constitution it materially differs from that which has taken place in any former year. Of late years the decrease in male crime has exceeded that in female to such an extent that in 1866, female offenders were nearly as numerous as male (the committee of that sex being forty seven per eent of the whole number in 1857, however, an extraordinary change has occurred, the deciease in female crime having been ten times as great as that in male. We conceive this to be a most satisfactory fact, for there can be no doubt that so great an improvement in the conduct of the females Of a country is a sure indication of the advance of prosperity, employment, and education. Moreover, the decrease io jnveuile crime has been enormous, much larger even than in adult, another most gratifying proof ef social and educational improvement."

The fine dressing combs and all small tooth combs, are cut by fine circular saw*, some so fine as to cut forty teeth in the space of one*inch, and they revolve fiv' thousand times in a minute.
There are some two thousand varieties of combs made and theggregate number produced, of all these different sorts of combs averago upwards of twelve hundred gross weekly, or about nine millions annually— a quantity that, if laid together lengthwise would extend about sevon hundred miles. The annual consumption of ox horns is about seven hundred and thirty thonsand the annual consumption of hoofs amounts to four millions.
