Editorial Change.
A card in the Journal of Wednesday evening announces to the public that G. F. COOKRRLY, Esq., has withdrawn from the editorial control of that paper, until after the October election. The Col. has been for many years connected with the press of this city, and it will seem strange to miss his name from the head of the Journal oven for the short space of time intimated in his card. If his withdrawal from the editorial corps of this city were permanent we ooald not bat express oar sincere regret, and, eves for the time being, we could not wish that anything we may have said of him, in the spirit of good natured ploasantry, should be taken bv any one in a sense different from that in which it was intended. The Col's, object in thus withdrawing himself from his old time duties is to afford him an opportunity to canvass the county with a view to securing his election, as the Democratic candidate, to the office of county Treasurer. We have heretofore spoken of the different men upon that ticket, and feel willing to SAy that, if the Col. could be eloctcd, he would discharge the duties of his offieo as faithfully .as .any .other man upon his ticket.
The editorial department of the Journal has been placod under the control of J. B. EnMUNrs, who has long been associated in its management. ... 'i fflr Hudson of the Express was father severe on the Editors of tue Union, in his yestordays issue, because they wrote such a truthful notice of the Democratic Con« vetition of last Saturday and some of its nominees, VA They havo greatly offended him 1y a candid *ud truthful notice of the Convention, and they will oitbor have to apologise to the assumed dictator or suffer the inflictions of his powerful castigations. Which will tbey du? Wo believe tb^y will stand up for their honor, but in this we may be mistnkon. Wcr will, however, soon nee ]inw tight hwlMHi has got them in his •'^lip/*—-Journal of Wednesday evening.
If tlio Editor of the Journal had taken tbi trouble of looking a little farther into the Union of Wednesday morning he would have seen whether we were eithor inclined to "apologize to tho assumed dictator or »u8or the inflictions of his powerful castigations." And if Mr. Edmunds will take the pains to examine carofnlly the editorials of yesterday's Express he will ohsorve that the "powerful'' "dictator1 has—to use common cxpress-ion-qulotly "simmered doteuSL ,uSo. much for" Uutlsen.
Pnt:R SKA SOUNUINQ,—Some poisons are surprised at a statement that the water upon the telegraphic plateau between Triuity and Valentia Bays is from two to three miles doep in its deepest pa its, having been told that there it is comparatively shallow. A comparison of deop sea soundings will ahow that the idea of its shallowness is correct, when measured by the ill most incredible abysses to which the plummet has beeu seut. Lieut. Berryman, in 1858, made a sounding in the Atlantic ocean 38,600 feet in depth, equal to a li
t.
tie over 7| miles: and OapU Denham, of the British Navy, has obtained soundings ai the vast depth of 46,238 f«tet, or about 8$ English miles. The highest moantains upon the globe inight bo hurled join these immense chasms and still leave vast ocean above their Ullcst peaks.— Tho giant Himalaya, that Overtop all other mountains, would bo swallowed as oasi* ly the Alp?. The highest peak of the chain is only 28,178 feet above tho sea level, and it* summit might be submerged about three miles at the point of Capt. Dunham's deepest soundings.

Atlantic Telegraph Cable. liotwithstanding the quantity of wire Altering into its composition, it is very flexible and may be lopped without inj urr. It weighs 1,860 poaads to the mile. The strength of the cablets such that, under ordinary circumstances, it will snstain six miles of its own length when suspended in the water.
A notion has been'eutirtained by some based on a mistaken idea of specific gravity, that the cable would not sink to the bottom where the water is two or three miles in depth, but this is a fallacy. The experimental soundings of Liuet. Berryman, as well as those of Lient. Manry, have demonstrated that in the extremest depths that have been reaened on the line of the cable, the minutest shells, weighing scarcely more than a feather, have settled as lightly upon the ooze as if they were reposing upon the bottom of a shallow pool. The inference therefore is that the cable not only rests on the ocean's bed through its entire length, but that it is absolutely safe from the effects of storms or other casnalities. Some have supposed that it might be cut by sharp, rocky projections, but none such are believed to exist in its bed.
The total length of the submarine cables lftid down previous to the completion of the Atlantic Telegraph enterprise was 950 miles. Add to this the Atlantic Cable, and the number of miles is increased to 2,564. When the telegraph is brought into working order, it will be in immediate connection with 33,000 miles of land telegraph, in this country, and on the European side with about 40,000 miles*— Taking all laud and submarine lines together, their capacity for the rapid diffusion of inteligince will be immense, and their effect upon the business and social intercourse of the world incalculable.^,
£yThe Evansville Journal, of Wednesday, tells the following amusing story of the way the SheriffoF that county managed to arrest a robber, who had broken into the safe of the Pavillion Hotel and then ran away to St. Louis. It says:
Following him to St. Louis, after a good deal of trouble Gavitt found his lodgings, and was watching the premises at a very early hour in the morning, before the inmates were moving, when a small boy came out of the houses an.l being accosted by the ex -Sheriff, told him he was going get a Doctor for a new lodger. The x- Sheriff professed himself to be a physician who wonld be happy to attend upon the invalid. Bsing introduced to the sick chamber, and having examined the tongue and felt the pulso, was profonndly cogitating upon the diagnosis of the caso, when the affectionate wife and sister-in-law of the patient auxiously asked what he could do for the sufferer. Tho Doator replied that he should prescribe a pair of close fitting hand-cuffs, which he immediately took from his pocket and applied to the wrists of his patient. The cffects of iho application was sudden and violent but these symptoms yielded at once upon tho appearance ofa St, Louis police officer, who was ni attendance at tho door, and tho prisonea settled dow into a very quiet repos

JSTThe government seems worse than indifferent to the prosperity of home labor. It exhibits a pttyudice against the products of its own citiatms. It sends to Scotland for iron pipes to distribute water through to national capital, and clothes the national vessels in the manufactures of England and Russia:
The ships of the American navy are entirely clothed with sails made of hemp duck, of Scotch or Russian manufacture, notwithstanding the fact that the^ cotton duck- now made in this country, is apon the wholt*, decidedly superior to the foreign hemp dock, as is shown by the fact that for the last six or eight years all tlje vessels in our merchant aervice and whale fisheries use it in preference to tlie foreign article.
Jarln-Kngland, lately, a young lady, with a foreign accent and rather eccentric manners, dressed all in white, with yellow boots, alighted at the Peterborough railway station. Her luggage was addWsed as follows "Ilcr Divine Majesty, the Zion Holy Ghost, Empress of the universe, Beloved Bride of Heaven, passenger to Silverdale, near Lancaster"— ?be stated that she was an angel from tfeaven, and presented one of too clerk* with a tract, written pertly in Latin, part-1 ly French, Midi partly in English.

St. Joseph—How a Drick
House and Well slid into the Kivcr. It is well knowu that rho town of St. Joseph, in Missouri, tho Western terininas of the Hannibal ami St Joseph Hailroad, has boen, for some time engaged in sliding into tho Missouri river. On Friday afternoon, tho 20th inst. a brick house at tho lower end of the city, together with tho well and smoke house, and between three quarters and an acre of laud, suddenly slid into tho stream. The St. Joseph Journal says:
The building was occuplod by Mr. Chas. Tillian/his wife, and six children. The family had just sat down to dinner, when they heard a rumbling noise iu ^he roar. They barely had time to spring to their feet, and make their oscape out of tho door, before the entire structure was a mas of ruins. The family lost pretty much all thoy posses*^ in tho way of furniture aud clothing. The building was situated about 50 feet from tho bank before the slide happened. The smoke house and well slid out in the river with the laud, both Keeping iheir respective positions. There was no iusuiaiice on the property.
A Frenchman, in the St. Louis
County jail, wrote a letter, a day or two ago, to a justice of that city, making the humble request that tho justice would procure some tobacco and matches for him, promising to repay him when his probation was ended. Tho following was the post-script to the letter 1*. 8. Smoking tobacco, manufactured by Scarfalatti fine cut. #1 liko fine tobacco, of good quality.) if it don't disturb your business to much, I would most respectfully a^kyou to let me have a few drops of musk, to chase away the bad odors I am daily inhaling. fall the organs which beneficent nature has man with, the Eye is the most important, most complex, and most delicate in organisation. From its exposed situation it is constantly liable to disease which assumes varied forms and which, wh«in neglected or maltreated, too freqaentl terminates in blindness. It becomes, therefore, absolutely necessary that the practitioner shall be thoroughly conversant, not only with the structure of the eye ball aad its ap pendages, but that be shall have a most accurate and perfect knowledge of all diseases to hich that organ is I labia.
In presenting thigcanl for public consideration I weald observe that after an experience of oro-r ten years in the principal ophthalmic hospitals of Europe, together with the advantages of a largc private practice, I am prepared to treat all diseases of the Eye with that certainty of success which can only be accomplished by yeat* of experience.
