MONDAY MORNING, AUGUST 30, 185b
For Pre»fdent in iSflO:
JOHN J. CRITTENDEN,
Of Kfntnrkr,
*Th£ Democratic Convention. vent ion held on Saturday last, wa* organised by calling J. tha chfclf uftd appoint*$?I41PrW Wo^g«c'#I One from each 'township were ehoffOn as Vica t'rcftldenf g, whew tho convention was ready for borine*#. After deciding to vote l»y township*, in the a sua] way, and taking down a list of the aapiranta for the various offices, *.v
f-.«,. ri
The delegates from oacli township "retired to different parts of the city to pre para their ballots for the various candidates, To give time for this purpose the convention adjonrnod for half an hour.
On the reassembling of the Convention tli2 following ticket was nominated on the first ballot:
For Representatives—Dr. Ezra Head,, nixl Hiram II. Tillolson. f* $. 1 tout
For Treasurer—Or. F. Cookerly. Win. H. Stewart was nominated by acclamation for a re •election to the office of ShorifT, and S. W. Edmonds for County Commissioner. No nominations wero marie for eithor Prosecutor or Surveyor.
Thus closed the nominations, ail of which' passed off without any disturbance «nd with seeming good feeling, which was not looked for even by the'Democrats jhcm/»elvcs. '•«.-
Dr. IS. Read was called for, who made his appearance and accepted tho nomination in a short but appropriate address.' Barring the Doctor's ultra Democratic notions wb cousider him a man competent arid worthy of tho post to which he now aspires. In his enthusiasm the Doctor made the remark that "the glorious principles of DsmocMcy had taken root all ovor this conntry—yes, all Over the ieorld ami" its fionefiei.al influences wore felt in every direction." Now, we must beg leave to differ with the Doctor on the scope ho gives to Democracy, and will be glad to meet hirii-—-at tho Walnut Springs some after noon and hear his whys and wherefores.
Mr. Tillotsoa is a young man of unexceptionable character, and is a rose among the thorns and gympson blossoms of Democracy—he deserves a bettor location, but we proaume it is too late in the season to iron-plant him now, so ho must look out fur tho Jinyliek-Lecompton-Buck, lest ho is plucked before he matures.
Mr. Stowart is tho present sheriff, and wo have said and we hero take occasion to repent that ho has made the best sheriff Vigo County has had since we became a citisen of the county—sixteen years ago. We have never had any party ties strong enough to force out of us w.hat we did not bolievo to be literally true, and we have ever dispised that party attachment which smothers tho honest dictations of the heart and compels a man to say of his neighbor what he knows to b?untrue, just becahse be differs with him on national politics. Fueling thus we shall continue to speak of our political opponents in snch torms as wo may think they merit, reserving, at the same time, the privilege to entar Into an honorable contest 'with such men whenever wo may sec fit
Of Mr, Cookerly we have had occasion to speak divers times, and as he is already too well known for convenience, we shall let him pass for the present, feeling as* Bined that he will take pains enough to exhibit himself to those who have not the plessuro of his acquaintance.
The Convention adjourned at the close of
a few
roaaatks from Mr. Cookerly which
were ma io in his usual

Porbaps there never was a more fletertbincd and bitter political contest, than if now going on in Illinois, between Douglag and Lyncoln, and their friends. The following is a fair sampled Tram bull's charge npoo Douglas was rather nnlooked
for, and perhapa out of place, yet Dong-!
las meets him with an air of triumph aoJ
throws the imputation bac2 into his face
with Spartan heroism. Tim battle cr seems .to "mctprzpr deqtit:" ftm'' "Now, fello'v-dtizehs I make the distinct charge tbatihere was a preconcerted arrangement and plot entered into by the very men who now claim credit for opposing the Constitution 'not submitted to the people* to have a Odm»tiiutioii formed and put in force without giving the people an opportunity to oppose it. This, my friends, is a serious charge, bnt I charge it, tonight, that the very men who travorse the country under banners proclaiming I'opular Sovereignty, by design eoncdcted a bill on purpose to force a Constitution on a I
Mr. T. goes to allude to TooisnW Kansas bill, and in reply to a qnefction frotn a Douglas man present, he said: "Ton want to satisfy yourself thaif^ie was in the plot toforfica Constitution upon the people I will satisfy yon, (cri«s of good, good, hit him again, and cheers) and the man who does deny it, I will cram the lie down his throat till lie shall cry enough." (Tremendous cheers.)
Douglas' response to thw direct^iHd damaging accusation, is quite freo from ambiguity.
rv
"There is in the language of yotiV other Senator, arriving in the city of Chicago, in my absence, without any provocation, making a charge as infamous as that, in language as gross as that. He had no provocation from mo. In all the speeches I have made this year, I have not alluded to him, by namo or otherwise. I have not assailed him in auy way, and fet he comes forward and makes a charge, corrupt in itself, and threatens that if any man denies it, he is going to 'cram the lie down his throat.' (Laughter, and by a voico, 'Ho will have a good time.') It strikes me it would have been fully as brave and manly for Mr. Trumbull to have said that to my face, (Cries of'tha*. is so.'") For when this charge was once made in a much milder form, in the Sonate of the United States, I did brand it as a lie in the presence of Mr. Trumbull (cries of 'Good,' and applause)—and Mr. Trumbull sat and heard it thus branded, without daring to say that it was true.— (Cry of 'Good,' and applause.) I tell you he know ii to be false when he uttored it at Chicago—(applause, and by a voice, 'Give him fits,* and yet he says he is going to cram the lie (applause and laughter) down his throat, until he should cry enough. (Laughter.) The miserable, craven hearted wretch, (applause,) he would rather have both ears cut off than to use that language in my presence, where I coultt call him to account." (Loud applause.)' £T Hk
WHAT THE ATLANTIC TELMORAPH OWES A Pim.ADET.vHiA MECHANIC.—Probably to no man whose direct agency was connected with the laying of tho Cable, success is more due than to William Everett, United States naval Engineer. Mr." Everett was the Engineer of tho sthcamship Niagara, on tlx* first trial last year, and by his mechanical genius and scientific- ability, renderd such aid, that after the failure, the Trans Atlantic Telegraph Company invited him to England to superintend the manufacture of the paying ont machinery. Our government granted him leave of absence for that purpose, and that young man, not yet &&, the shiiy side of thirtysix years, became the consulting engineer with the most scientific man in England. It was the machinery as invented and applied by Mr. Everett which has proved snccossfnl in paying^out the Cable, it was his ingenuity that overcome the last obstacle to this great project.
A SrLKNDiii IuxiitNAnos.—The cllvaena of New Haven celebrated the laying of the Atlantic Telegraph in splendid style. Wires were strung along Ea&t Rock, supported by stakes and trees, extending from the east end around to the western side. Large balls tff India rubber scraps, wired together and dipped In turpentine, war* hung npon this wire and the whole ftimnltaneoosly fired, exhibiting aflame that from N, Haven had the appearance ol a line of fire in the heavens. Hedges were formed npon which tar was poured and s*ixSy tar barrels were distributed in every accessible nook in the aide* of the mountains. The whole when fired amid ascending rockets, made a grand appearance. Upon Ea*t Peak a huge bonOre was kindled and burning resin and wood illumined tha snmmit, lighting the adjacent coirotry.

of both white and black brethren, and wdrldlians, and some Indians besides, had gathered to participate in and to witnose the ceremonies. Several had been doused under, the brethren iiud sisters, botli black and white, making the woods vocal at each successive sousing with their songs of praise, a deep solemnity resting over the whole scene, and all went oa very well Until it came to the. turn of a big, buHy negro, whose weight was rather an over match for the slightly-formed, feeble old minister. The negro was therefore instructed by him, in sotto voce, jtistlefore the fact, to sorter squat himself unller- n:mt -The bottom of the cteek was oF slippery soap-stone, whish, just beyond the point where a sufficient depth was obtained for a proper admiuistration of the 'ordinance,' broke suddenly off iuto a deep hole. Big Will attempted to do as directed, but, like his race in matters of religion generally, overdid the thing his feet slipped from under him, and down he^ went into the deep hole, dragging th^ minister along with him. ^Tho astonished crowd was horrified as they both disappeared beneath the surface^ For a few soeonds bubbles rose to tho surface to mark the spot where they went, down, and then Big Will, snorting and spouting water like a porpoUe, rose to the surface. As Will regained tho shelving rock and made toward dry land, the minister was discovered clinging to his leg with bull dog tenacity. They were both happily saved. As soon as Will's speech returned to him he was luard to exclaim, •Gosh Gol A'Mighty, white folks, some on your gwine to lose a nigger wid dis damned foolishness
The minister redlining on his elbow belching water, and panting for breath, at the conclusion of Will's speech, ejacula-ted—-'Lord, thy Will bedono!"—Mobile Tribune.

CURB FOR TUB BITE OF A MAD Doo.— A writer in the National Inteligencer says, that spirits of hartshorn is a certain remedy for tho bite of a mad dog. The wound, ho adds should be constantly bathed with it, and threo or fjtir doses, diluted, taken inwardly during the day. The hartshorn decomposes, chemically, the vi rus insinuated into theAvound, and immediately alters and destroys its deleterionsness, the writer, who resided in Brazil for some time, first tried it for the bite of a scorpion, and found that it removed pain and inilamation almost instantly. Subsequently he tried it for the bite of a -rattle snake, with similar success. At tho suggestion of the writer, an old friend and physician tried it in the case of hydrophobia^aiid always with the same success.
Tho delicate and interesting operation of transfering blood from one person to another has again been successfully per formed by Dr. Wheatcroft*.. an English surgeon, in the case of a female patient. When apparently expiring from the loss of blood, about »vo pounds were transfero«l from the veins of her husband into her reins, with the most favorable result. In a few minutes after the enrrent of blood began to flow, the ebbing of lifo was checked—her circulation being re-estab-lished, and her deliverance from apparently certain dissolution restore!.
ELKCTORAI. VOL* TOR I860.—Tho electoral vote fer 1856 consisted of 296 votes. The admission of Minnesota will increase that number to 800, and should Kansas and Oregon be admitted, the entire vote will be 306, rejniring l54 for a choice of Preaidenb Of this 306, there will be 120 front the slavcholding Stat&s^ and ISC from the non-sUveholdmg States. In the Charleston (Democratic) Convention, nnder the two third rule, it will require 204 votes to make a nomination. It will require 84 Northern votes, .even $itb a united South to make a nomination.
