The curtain of oblivion is raised, and the past acts, in the drama of life, pass swiftly before toe—not the world's great drama* wherein mighty heroes bleed, and marty's hang upon the cross bnt my own humble, inner life, where Joy, Hope, tjova Despair and Resignation held alternate sway.
First I behold myself As A ttieiry heart' ed child, surrounded by father, mother, sister, and an only brother—the latter is my only companion. Together we roam o'er hill and vale play beneath tho spreading branches of some majestic oak, or Incline on the mossy bank of the purling brook, and watch the little shining minnows dart though the crystal wave. Kow a shadow falls 0*8f the sc*ue. Death enters the household, and lays his icy hand on the fairest of thfc fairest of the flock— my bltie«eyed baby sister. Her rosy cheeks grow coM and pate beneath hia touch) and the light goeo out of hsr soft blue eyes—* tht is dead.
Weep
bitterly to see her
laid in the da top cold ground and, in dreams, she hover's o'er my bed, her shining wing* almost touching my brow but When I entreat her to take me to that bright land, where she has found a home, she vanisbest and 1 awake and weep to find it all a dream.
t,
Fancy waves her magio wandj the sccne fades, and another appears. I am just oh tho verge of womanhood. My heart beats high with hope, aud anticipation's bright visions of the future fill my raptured soul. Life seems all sonshine.
Surrounded by kind friends, who smile approvingly upon me, and tirge tnfl forward.in the path of usefulness and honor, what more can 1 ask But again the shadow falls— deeptt than before. Death again enters the loved circle and it is the mother now who is the victim. Oh cruel death I Wilt thou not in mercy stay thy hand Wilt thou send me one on the untried sea of life, without a mother to di* reel my frail bark aright Must I buffet the adverse waves alone Who, like a mother, can warn mo of the shoals and quicksands, in this troublod sea But death heeds not my entreaties—he bears her to the tomb. The curtain falls in darkness. ^T
Again I tcnlttte to look. Theutfiiitfila Israised the cloud is parted,Und the sun shining. Joy and hope have revived.— While I am contemplating the life before me, with great satisfaction, a noble youth appears on the stage. The light of intelligence and love beams on his countenance/ and shines in his dark eyes. My young, careless heart, in all its dreams, had never yet dreamed of love, bnt now ii owns the sway of him who stands before mo. And yet it knows not that that proud manly heart is alike affected. r"'"*'
Long is it left in doubt but at last the happy Moment pomes—a new joy is added to my life.. All future joy seems faint in comparison# Wkutislomf Ah, who can tell but thoae who have felt its power. The best lexieograhpors cannot define it. LangnAgo is exceedingly weak in comparison with the emotions of a fond, loving and trusting heart Oh bliss without al lary Mu»t this, too, fode Will that sawe dark messenger, who has twk» dim wed my Joy, interpose, and d#sh the oop from my lips

{from the koioui 'Mo.) Times, July 15th.] Blopoment Bxtrsordinary. ^%)n last Sunday evening the citizens of ikis. 1 ace were tAken by surprise, occasioned by the elopement of Mr. John S. Browning, proprietor of the Union House withone of his boarders, a Madame M. E. Page-, Alias Kyser. The woman Was brought here by a man named Kyser, and stopped at the Mansion House, the pro* prictor of which became dOubtfol whether he would revive an equivalent for his board and shipped them. They then went to the Union House, where Kyser deserted her. Mr. Browning heretofore has borne1 an unimpeachable character he leaves a large family of sons and daughters, some of them grown. It appears as though he is the dupe of a female Artificer —having collected a Ufrge sum of monfiy to make somo payments, Mrs. Page alias Kyser being aware of this entrapped him for it* Their arrangements were so artfully Made that neither his wife nor any One about the house suspected their intentions of speedy departure. lie had told them «t home that he was going St. Louis to pnrchfcse a stock of groceries, but his wife, Who had been sick for some weeks past, asked him to defer the trip, which he a8sumbdly did. He wis' unusually kind to her that eVeuingi in order to mak6 his elopment more seCurfi. Madame Page was going to St. Louis and tit) suspicion rested on her. When last heard of they had taken the cars at Alton for the East.— Madame Page wrote from St. Lonis informing Mr*. Browning that she did not want her husband, and would leave him there. with one of the most abundant hay crops that has ever rewarded the labor of the agriculturist. In some localities there has been almost a total, and in others a partial, failure in thecerials, but our exchanges give an assurance of an abnndance that should gladden our hearts and inspire us with gratitude to Him who gives "seed time and harvest,

The agricultural interest is now reaping along with its splendid harvest, the results of the depression which has fallen upon the manufacturing and commercial interests. The repulsion of 18^7, brought about by the neglect of that provision to national industry Which the Oovernment owed to us, but refused to give, has prostrated not only theshippor, the merchant, and the manufacturer, but the fafmer along with them. Europe is extremely anxious to sell to us, but will not buy of us and out trouble is that we have beefl buying of her toofreelys to the neglect afld injury of our home industry. The resnlt is that, in the paralysis which ha# fallstt Upon our workshops, the farmers have lost not only the forelgfl bat the home demand for their pftdtfCts. tlntil that home den-and csn be animated and increased by fosteriug and promoting oiir own in preference to foreign workshops, the depression in the priees of agricultural produce must continue without abatement.—Baltimore Patriot.
