THE VERY LATEST FROM UTAH. -----
From the St. Joseph Gazette, 8th.
In the afternoon of yesterday, 7th inst., the Salt Lake mail arrived in this city, for the first time direct from Salt Lake
The mail left Salt Lake City on Saturday, the 19th of June. The Peace Commissioners, Messrs. Powell and McCullongh, had arrived safety. Young and the lest of the Mormons, with the exception of some forty or fifty, had evacuated the city and gone south to Provo. The city looked almost entirely deserted. Peace had been agreed upon, but on what terms our informant was unable to learn.
On the 20th the mail party met Col. Johnson and his command, at Echo-Can-on, about ten miles this side of Weber river. The command was stretched out on the road for more than a mile in length; met General Harney and command encamped just beyond Fort Laramie. Col. May and command 35 miles this side of Laramie; met a large body of infantry at Ash Hollow. Major Emery was encamped on the Big Blue; met another command at Fort Kearny. The mail party encountered heavy rains on South Platte, about forty miles beyond Fort Kearny; had to swim the Platte. The Weber river was also very high. The grass on the entire route, was luxuriant, and never before known to be so good. The Sioux Indians were scattered all along the route, but were friendly; met large trains of provision wagons from Platte river
river
this way, all progressing finely. Going out on the 10th of June, the party encountered a severe snow storm, and a heavy snow fell at Fort Bridges [sic] on the tenth of JUne. -----
The National Guards of New York. utodsr Colonel Etoryes, which paased through Baltittivvi this morning on their way home from Richmond, is eertainly one o€ the but regulated and appointed militia companiesni 0ie United Htates. In d'ill,
ftU it cormr, ocgatticltion and general sppearance, it will be dose comparison with the "regulare" even of the modern military government. Some years ago an officer of the New York National Guards committed suicide. This act, according to military discipline, is considered one of cowardice, but the deceased was well known to be one who in active service stood amid the bravest of the brave. He had been through the Mexican war, and stood high in esteem as a soldier but other matters when quietly at home promoted him to become a tsuioide. He left an orphan child, a bright and promising little daughter. She was alone in the world, and, ae it were, friendless. The regiment of her father adopted her, and sbe became thus "a Child of the Raiment," and that Tegiment the gallant National Gnarda of New York. A tax of two dollars per annum was levied on each member for the orphan's support and education. This amounted to 12,000 a vear, and what waa not expended was duly pnt away in investment for A dowry for the Daughter bf the Regiment. The young lady, now sixteen years old, has grown beautiful, intelligent and aceompUsliadtaRd is well off and doubtless she looks upon her gallant guardians with all the love, honor and enthusiasm that Marie did on the brave Snl-
and the gallant 81st in the Opera.— uch companies as the New York National (jtaarda reflect honor on the country.
