The Bvwthig gUr of dm city {Administration papar) does not frive as favorable •a aeeonat of the election as did ysetardny. ft ebtrgM that mamy $a*ajld* ekiztn* qf Wa*hmyton won vr**t*tod from. mas welt BY tk« TWIMM of the npiIar police as 4y (kt rowd§i*m af tho gang* of throng* rvfiaa* vtbo paraded the afreets, •ad bong about the polls.
It doss oot say, however, what was the fact, that these gang* wer* imported hither by the Democrat*. Ilia Star has soma reason to complain, as the mob, on ita *ray to eongratnlnte the saeceesfat competitor fot ths mayoralty, broke the windows and otherwise damped its publication office, sad came very near killing some of the iamatas of ths adjoining building. The caINK of tikis was that the editor of the Star is a brother to the defeated candidate for mayor, and has stood neutral daring the campaign jest ended.
Thus appears fthat the Democratic ticton In W«mingtott was achieved by the "violence of the regular {Democratic) poHea aad the rowdyism of gangs of strange ruffians" Imported for the occasion by the Democrats. Why sleape the indignant of tha Danoeistie organs it the attempts of the Democracy to cany an election by mob law la Washington City sad in Hew Orleans.—Lou. Jour. ft* brata force nndertaken by tha Defaoemts of Washington City to carry tftes election will be long remembered by an basest people. Mr. Berret had been rotmi oat of office—city postmaster—by old Bock) snd was placed in nomination as an antl-Lecompton Democrat, and yet the Onion baa the andaeity to claim it Ltimwtpien victory So it seams that both partlaa hav* bam s#hdled in this great Daaooratio victory—^rif, his Mends, by Basset being palmed upon them for an bonast Democrat, and **condly, the Amer ican party ware swindled by the import* tion of the "Stat* Wmu and "M* Stone Clmb," from Baltimore and Philadelphia, wife nrero brooght Into the city several days before tha election, and were in the habit of committing assaults upon all who happened to be opposed to them, politically. The power of the Administration waa asserted snd hundreds of clerks who had never voted there before, ware given to understand that they had to vote, and Wove* like tbey voted—the Democratic ticket.—Under each eircumstancee, it is not to be wondered at that the American party were defeated. Although it is tree that Wallaoh waa never a member of the American party, and waa announced, simply as an independent candidate. This being trne, it was hardly to be expected that hewould receive the fall rote of the party.
The German residents of the city are all inclined to be Republican, bat were induced to vote for Barret on the anti-Le-ptoB principle—as they entertain a
coi few prejudices against the Amerioan party. But, are think, in this caaa, they defeated tbelr own intentions by electing Berrst.^:

Bevivid of tke WUg Party. We find the following in the Washington correspondence of the Mobile Marca-
WA«HIKOTO*, May 15, 1858.
That the old Whig party is to be- revived, under the same name, and with plain national platform, upon which all the anti-Lecomptomtes-eaa stand, is nows settled question. The fundamental principles are few and national—the first being "popular sovereignty," or the principles lately involved in the opposition to the Ijeccmpton Constitution. Another principle is to be "Economy of the Public Domain," a policy to sell the public lands in small quantities to actual settlers only. It has also been proposed to substitute the free trade doctrine for that of a protective tariff, and to initiate the principle .of direct taxation as a revenue measure but this policy has not been agreed upon. A National bank of Exchequer, on the Tyler plan, lias also bean talked of as a reveane measure. One of the greatest difficulties with the managers has been the selection oi a name for the organisation.— The term "Republican," in its original sense, was proposed, but the late sectional associations connected with that name ware a fatal objection to its adoption.— So with the original term "American"— its late associations were against it. The term "Union Psrty" was proposed, but, to the credit of the patriotism of the managers. be it said, they were not disposed by the adoption of this term to recognize and precipitate a disunion party. The term "Whig" was finally proposed, and urged both on account of its history and national associations. The following definition was quoted from the lexicographer ss particularly appropriate for tho proposed organization "WHIG—one of a political party which had its origin in England in the seventeenth century, in the reign of Charles I or TI. Those who supported t'*e King in his high claims were called Tori**, while the advocates of popular rights were called Whigs. During the Revolution in the United States the friends and snpportera of the war and the
ples ot the Revolution were oalled Whigs, snd those who apposed them were oalled Tori** and Royalifts." However appropriate or otherwise, in, the present case, the name Whig" has been agreed upon by the managers, and is to be proposed in the forthcoming programme.

gular. The proprietor of an extensive silk spinning mift in that plaoe employs about eighty women or young girls, most of whom belong to the surrounding villages, and are in the habit of spending the Sunday with their families. For that purpose they were accustomed to start on the Saturday evening and walk distances varying from three to twelve miles, and return on the Sunday evening more fatigued than by a hard day's work. In order to remedy that inconvenience, their employer had this omnibus constructed, which has two rows of seats, one over the other, and can contain about sixty passengers.— When the mill is closed on Saturday evening, four strong horses are attached to it, and it conveys the females to their respective villages, aad on Sunday evening pro--oeeds to collect and bring them back.

Oa the aaraiag of Tocedaylaii, 8. W* Carpenter, of the Dubuque detective police, arrived in this vilUge, and after an interview with Mr. James Garrison, left in his company for Pier Cove, whieh is some twenty-five miles west of this place. Their bnataees there was to capture a man bv the name of Bell, alias Sweetling, whom Carpenter had been following for about a fortnight. The object of their search was peeling bark for Mr. H. Berringar, and waa boarding at the house of Mr. Fisher, at Pier Cove. Bell, orSweetling, waa known to be a most desperate ruffian and consequently his arrest had to be arranged with caution. It waa ultimately effected, just as he had taken Ms seat at the dinner table, by Garrison sieving him aroaad the arms. At the same time Carpenter rashed from his 'concealment, and, in less time than it takes to relate the fact, ironed the prisoner. A. hurried search was made of the prisoners person but nothing beyond an old jack knife was fotmd. The three then instantly started for this place but they had not proceeded more than half a mile before Carpenter's suspisions were awakened by his elbow coming in contact with some hard substance under the prisoner's armf and it wss thought expedient to make another and more thorough examination of his person. A halt was made, and two Colt's revolvers, four inch barrels, loaded and capped, were taken from his person, having been secreted under each arm, and a formidable bo trie knife was found hidden in his right boot. A thousand dollars in counterfeit money was likewise taken from him.
We learn thst the prisoner recognized Carpenter, and was exceedinly earnest in getting a promise to be kept out of the bands of the mob when they arrived at Dubuque. From this time he became very talkative snd very communicative. We gather from a conversation with Mr. Garrison, the following antecedents of Bell or Sweetling. For two or three years he has been captain of one hundred and sixty robbers on the banks of tho Mississippi. He lived in a perfect palace on the Iowa bank, and posWd as a retired physician, which enabled his gang to visit him without suspecion. Tbey owned several bosts in which they were aocustomed to run their plunder to a southern market. The goods ox property which were stolen by the gsng amounted to between fifteen and twenty thousand dollars yearly. About a fortnight ago an attempt was made to arrest Sweetling on one of his boats, but he escaped after being wounded on the forehead by a pistol ball. It was from this event thai he was 'followed by Carpenter. The cargo or boit on which Sweetling was acting as
skipper,
princi
was valued at $10,000
His hiding place at Pier Cove was discovered by the interception of a letter.

Englisk priori cttrrent often speak of the price of whoat per quarter—to reduoe this to barrels, moltiply tks price, (same ratio) by the barrel. Thus,—If wheat is quoted at 56 shillings per fpiarter, moltiply 56 by 7, and divide by 12, and itgivea the price 82 shillings 8 pence per barrel.
The Poet, Barry Cornwall, thus
refers to philopamas: "I greatly objcct to this ose-sided game —this finding a doable almond, sharing it with lady, and then having to pay a forfeit when next she encoanters yon.
