tbe Bttam»oi|«Bl wlttt Ml* road in danger. The rise in the WtbadgT has cootiuuecl prettj rapidly op to some tixae during the night of Snnday, wliea it eommencbd fallinj The river is now very near the mark
of the flood in. 1828—being over 30 feet
above low water, and is near one mile and a quarter-wide opposite the city. The draw-bridge broke loose at the
draw on Saturday night, about 8 o'clock, polling the entire length into the foaming
current wish a tremendous crash, while the agitated waters seemed to leap over the rnins as though they wore eager for the
derftiaction. Th* timbers, bound together with iron bands, rods and braces, held together until the hugh mass struck the is
land, threo-quaiters of a mile below the cfry, when it separated, turned across the river and passed down the current This is a heavy loss to the Bridge Company,
and also to our city, as, perhaps, eighteen months or more will be required to erect
a ucw bridge. It has required diligence and a g^at deal
of hard labor to save the grade through the bottom. The water rose over it iu many places, and it is difficult to tell what the
damage will be until the water recedes. Three or four more inchas of a rise would, undoubtedly, have taken almost the entire
grade, once the Water had cut through near the middle. There is,'* however, a hope left yet, that the most of the grade
will be saved. In the afternoon of Sunday, the trestle work, near St. Mary's, ou the T. H. ife A. Road gavo way, and the timbers were scattered through the bottoms. Near ono hun
dred yards went down, together with three
cars freighted with itou. TbeS3 cars had been run upon the trestle work with a view of holding it down. Ilad this su-
pcrKtruetute gone down len minutes sooner, iuor?t,han one hundred persons, iu all probability would have been drowned, as
it wa« covored with human beings of all ages. A few were on the bridging-when it gave way—breaking near the middle and
dividing in two pieces—the west half lodging Hguiii.st a tree, which gave thofe on
that jmit time to get off, but they had to run for life. Among those who were thus
eminently in danger, was Wm. M'Quil-
ktn, who, it i* said, run foster than lie posidbly could have done uuder afty other
circumstances. j" it will require From three to four weeks to rvpair this trestle work, after the water
g»t« out of the bottom. Tha earth on the north side of the west
pier of the railroad bridge was washed out until about half tile track, in widths was
left bare for a i'ew feet. Brush and hundreds of b»|fs of sand were thrown in here winch checked the washing and saved the
pier ftom great damage. Between the river and the trestle work
the water is runing over the grade in mauy pla
en.
One train was busily engaged in
haw ling sand along the road to raise the grade, on Sunday, which will preveut fur
ther damage if there is not a forthaz rise.
