wRDWESDAY MORNING, MAY 26 1859

For President in two:

JOHN J. CRITTENDEN,

&

Of Kentttekf.

I«ieut. Gov. Hammond. The Lient. Governor paid otir ei'y a ^flying vi«it, on Saturday last, and addressed the disaffected Democracy at the Court Hotue in the evening. We had thought of not noticing his logic in relation to the union of Democracy, bnt, inasirnch as courtesy requires a passing nctiee, at least, we shall simply fill the space expected.

The effort to harmonize the Democracy upon the English-Lecotnpton bill, in onr judgment, was the weakest we have heard or read. Though, we doubt whether there In a man in the Btafe who can mitke the least impression in this communitj in favor of that infamous bill. The land swindle, and the slavery movement endorsed by that bill are plainly to be seen, and it will take a little more than a forced con struetion of the objects of the bill, to hide the hideous horns which have rent the seat of Buck's pantaloons and scattered Democracy in every direction. The Governor tried bis best to be eloquent upon this subject, yet ft was no go. Ilia words fell harmless at his feet, failing even to produce an echn.

After the Governor had concluded his exhortation, which was designed to influence the organization of a club of Young Democrats, an effort was made to organize, but as some desired the basis to be Lecompton and some anti-Lecompton, it was prudently suggestod that the meeting adjourn, which Mras agreed to.

In conclusion we will say that the Gov cruor's speech had but little effect, and we would advise him the next time he desire? to Visit ottr ci»y for the purpose of entertainiogonr citizens, that it will bcmorc congenial for him and his re^ utation to choose some other subject.'

Another Mad-Stone.

Mr. S. K. (SPARKS showed us a madstonc which he has had in his possession for the past thirty years, during which time its virtue has been frequently tested, and always proved successful. Then wecerlainlv have two in Vigo, which effectually fortifies onr county against liydiophobia, and makes us fool secare. wk

FROM MEXICO.—-Secretary Floyd, in his report to Congress, recommended the entiro abandonment of the Territory of Now Mexico, as boing not worth the cost of governing it. He says its entire civilized population- is only 61,000 souls, and its Whole ml wtate is only estimated at 2,« 700,000 dollars. He says* "To protect this smsll population, we are compelled to maintain a

force at an annqal expense nearly equal to half the value of tho whole real estate of the Territory, Would it not bo better to induce the inhabitants to abandon a country which seems hardly fit for tho habitation of civilised men, by remunerating them for their property in money, or in lands situated in more favored regions Even if the Government paid for the property quintuple its value, it would

merely on the score of economy, be largely the gainer by the transaction and the troops now stationed in New Mexico would be available for the 'protection of other portions of Our own and of the Mexican iWitory." ... —.-Mi

few days ago a poor German rag

picker in New York, who lived in a nest of German rag-pickers, was stoned by them out of his wretched abode, because they discovered that be and bis family were subsisting daily upon the meat of dead cats and rats that he found in his search of rags on the streets. They thought, that, by such a diet, he disgraced the honorable fraternity of rag-pickcrs.— It is said however, that he and bis family looked in finer, fatter, healthier condition thm any other family of rag-pickcrs in the neighborhood. Their victuals seem to have been more nourishing and gcntoel.

Xy The employees of the New Albany and Salem railroad, in the former city, in view of lbs lafo disasters to it, hare subscribed upwards of 83,000 for its relief, in sums from $500 to 820 each, ac cording to their namfs. $5,000 will probably be the amouut of subscription when completed. ,..

AN ADVANTAGEOUS NAVIOATOR.—Tn the early part of last year, a resident of Standford, Conn., by the name of Charles. B. Webb, who has spent a portion of his life in a seafaring capacity, went to work and built hirosclf a yatch, twenty-two feet long, which he christened the Charter Oak, and in which he, accompanied by a man and a boy, started from New York, on the 22nd of June last, for Liverpoel.— When only about a day out, his right hand man, an old salt, was accidenUy knocked overboard and drowned and fearing that he wOnld not be able to find another sailor equally ventursome, and that he might possibly loose the lad by desertion, shpnid he return to port, he concluded to proceed on the voysge without any other companion or assistant to keep watch and steer the frail bark during his own occasional brief opportunities to obtain repose than the boy referred to, who had tilver before been at sea.

Although without a chronometer or chart of the English coast, Capt. Webb arrived safely at Liverpool without a pilot, on the 27th of July, after a voyage of 3t day*, in the smallest vessel that ever crossed the oeean. Tho adventure was considered by nantical men the most skillfnl of the age. Thousands rushed to see the Charter Oak and its intraped commander. The little craft was soon disposed of for £200, which amount, together with a passage ticket home for the Yankee saildr in one of Collins' line of steamships, who thus desired to manifest their admiration for hia courage and aldll. Mr. Webb, however, not content with what he has already achieved, about Christmas last commenced building another yatch (the Christopher Columns) forty-four feet keel and sixteen feet beam, which is now rapidly approaching completion by Us own hands alone, and on hoard of which he contemplate* embarking, in a few months, for South Ampdon, the Isle of Wighs, and St. Peters burgh, with a view to give the British Queen, the Czar of Russia and probably the Emperor of France a favorable opportunity to see what the Yankees can do in the way of boat building as Well asia navigating the Atlantic. —, t.-M*
