For President in i««Oi

JOHN J. CRITTENDEN,

Of Rimtsrir.

Tho New Party.

Almost every measure, of a political character, tliat iutrodfloed in Congress, brings to light more perfectly the division nonr existing fa the CtanocrafTc party, and every d&y'tliat pasfces over tut furnishes renewed evidence that the breach cansed by tho Ivan*as question ia becoming deeper and wider. Iu vain has it been attempted to reconcile these hostile fecHuga by tho bribing trickery of the English Bill, for I ha mass of those opposed to th9 policy of the administration are indignant and disjfutfted with that shallow and nefarious *chem4. A few of the lukewarm smpporters of Douglas, and some of the "milk and water"' prease* of the country, who have been only avraiting a favorable opportunity to ewponse fho cause of the President, through motivos of fear or favor, may be gradually whipped into the Lecompton rank a by this miserable anbterfngc, but tho mass of tho honest and independent linen of the Democratic party will stand lirtn in their opposition to the swindling artifices resorted to by the ljuchanan faction. Thu4.it"is that to-day, tho breach in-the Democratic ranks is wider than it ever has been, and the prospects of a reconciliation' ftrtj beyond the possibility of a

MP0*'-,iA ftr •**. ri *r*«. A The result of all thu is that the Demomtic'partjr, a national party, is virtually dead. Tho Republican party never w?g, nor nevor can be, a national party. now party must therefore spring up from these ruins, which will unite tho hon*c«t, conservative men cf the country, and which in its principles, will be more lib

and more national than oithor of the other parties have been, alt 1 which will Weep away the remaants of llopublican i.'tn and Democracy like chnfl'bcfore a hurricane. Tho American party will be the Jifoi and spirit of this new organization, whether its namo bo adopted or another be aefumed, for the principles of conservatism, of national Hflfety and of national honor, which such a party must adopt, are the principles for which the Atnoricau party has alwayB labored unwearied and undismayed..^'

That such a party will wely be organized is becoming the fixed impression all orCT'the

p»08v, both North and South, is daily discussing the Knbjort. rrhe following is ftcm thoidom^liii JSaffle db Enquittfl "The* hostility of Senator Douglas to Mr. Buclianai\ is, permanent and bitter, aUd his defection from the Administration wing of tho Democracy may bo considered irrevocable hence, the "groat unforrifiod," as a national party, may be counted a» among historical antiquities.

It becomes evidont now that a n6Hv po litical combination will spring up, Ftronger, rooro liberal and more national than the Republican party, and whit will ftirnish tho ground work for a new organisation in reference to tho next Presidential election The President is evidently alarmed at what tho futnre portends, for he lias written to Gov. Wise, expressing his dis approbation of tho attacks made upon him in the Union. The defection of Wise and Douglas utterly prostrates tho Ad minis tration, Evory measure it brings forward is a

failure, and every failure removes it still fnrther from that popular sympathy which gives strength and vigor to a repre seatative Government like ours."

The Sheriff of Cleveland, Ohio,

passed through our city on Tuesday, with an Englishman who was imported to this conn try by the Bond lloldera of the Illi no is Central Railroad, for the purpose of watching tho interests of tho road. He was stationed at Pana, and bad been using the Company's money for some time without permission. He bad bought a snug little farm of the Company, and had improved it considerable, when a suspicion arose as to His prfyrttt, and the gentleman Vaa called up for a thorough settlement, which be did not like very well, to he concluded to give leg-baul. but was canght at Cleveland and njtnrned. It not known bow ranch, be bat embexxled, but it ia thought to be over #2,000. Can't expect much better of 0 uewly imported atock. Good for those who trusted turn.

ONE OF NATURE'S WOSOERS.—The Bot tomlesa Pit in the Mammoth Cave of Kentucky, is suspected by many to run through the whole diameter of ihe earth. The branch terminates in it, and the explorer suddenly Suds himself brought npon its brink, standing upon a projecting platform, snrronndod on throe sides by darkness and terror, a golf on the right and a gulf on the leA, and beforo him what seems an interminable void. He looks aloft but no eye haa yet reached the top of the great overarching dome nothing is there seen hot the Bathing of the water dropping from above, smiling as it shoots by in the unwonted gleam of the lamp.— He looks below, and nothing there meets his glance save darknew at thick as lampblack, and he bears a wild, monrnfol melody of water, the wailing of tho brook for the green and sunny channel left to the npper world never more to bo re-visited. Down goes a rock, tumbled over the cliff by the guide, who i» of the opinion that folks come here to soe and hear, not to muse and be melancholy. There it goes —crash it has reached the bottom. No, hark, it strikes again once more and again still falling.
