Insults Lo the Nation.

TJJO time has been wlicn tho slightest insult to onr National honor would have been resented with the promptness tiiat is due to onr standing1 as a nation. The

time lias been wliea th« certainty of such a one roarso has been a protection to our citizens wherever they may have been, and lias caused our flag to be respectcd in every quarter r.f the globe. But it seems that wo have come upon strange and degene rntc times when the panoply of American ritlzensliip can only bo spoken of as something that has been, and national honor is becoming to be a myth. Not long ago the proudest nation of the earth would have trembled for the consequencd of an insult to our flag or an injury to one of our citizens, but now a horde of negroes in an ocean inland arc plundering otir r.hips and our citizens, arc dragging our /lag through the streets, and arc daily subjecting an American consul and his wife to the basest and vulgarest insults, and yet not a finger is raised by our Administration to chock theso burning outrages and bring the perpetrators to pnnishment.— The following, from the Jiouisville Journal will furnish some idea of the character uf the insults we arc thus subjected to: "\Vo soo by tho Washington papers, that, according to dispatches received from our commercial agent at San Domingo, the condition of Americans and of tho whiles as a raeo in that island is exceedingly critical. Tho negro leader, Bacz, is besieged within the walls of San Domingo, where, amid all the horrors of famine, he wreaks his ferocity upon tho whites whom he retains as hostages for his own ultimato safoty. Tho American consul and his wife, tho daughter of ono of the „oldest old white fatniles of tho island, are daily subjected to tho basest and vulgaro*t fnsnlt*. Tho lady has been hissed at in tho streets and followod home from church ^.ith obsccno language tho U. S. flag has time and again been draggod through tho /troota and trampled and stamped on by negro mobs American vessels and seamen havo been illegally sacrificod, and not a finger is lifted by our Government for the redress or aires', of theso insufferable outrage*. It is stated that tho luhutnan savages havo plundered our ships and citizens to tho amount of 8300,000, for which they havo not bean brought to account in any shnpc, and that they arc now threatening to invado tho Dominican Hepublic and drive out or massacre all the whites with the oxcoption of tho subjects of European powors friendly to Hayti and yet our Administration, with tho wholo U. S. navy at its command, is as snpino as if thoro was nothing wrong in that quarter of tho world. There is no other civilized nation on earth, whose rights are so disgraccfuly neglected by their government those of tho United States are and have been for the last five years."

OOKAN MAIL ROUTES.—The bill before tho House of Representatives, provides f-r live routes, via: From Now York to Southampton from Now York to Glucksdat, via Plymouth Havre and Rotterdam from Now Orleans, via Havana, Bermnda, Fayal and Lauiemor, to Bosdeaux: and from Norfolk to Nantes. The sue of the steamer is fixed at 2,000 tons, speed not less than ten miles an hour, and the compensation at 82 per mile. The total pay per anum would bo for tho five lines 8881,367 —and tho receipts are estimated at 88S9,850. It is not probable that in tho limited timo to which Congress has restricted its session, that this bill be perfected and pass wl.

tice by the Memphis Eaglt and Enquirer that in an appeal case recently taken by the Jewish storo-kocpers of that city gainst some fines imposed npon them by the Recorder for violating the Sabbath law, by keeping open their marts of trade, |for the transaction of business on Snnday,

Judge Carnthers of the Common Law Court hai sustained the deeision of the Court below. They appealed the caso npon the grounds that they observed Saturday as tho day of religious rest, and therefore thought they had the right to transact business matters the Christian Sabbath. Thus the Jews will have to suspend two days in tach week, instead of

If tho Jews merely spend their Sabbath as an cxcuse for doing business on cnch day of tho week, then was tho decision a just ono, because ono day of rest certainly should be kept, but if the Hebrews actually observed Saturday as thoir Sabbath, then the fines arc unjust, and anti-Repnb-licao. In a reccnt decision, in a similar casein New York, Judge Thompson denied the claim of the Hebrew to an immunity for Sabbath breaking, on the ground that he only availed himself of his claim to the Jewish Sabbath, to keep no day of rest at all, as ko kept no day sacred, but said very clearly that ho had kept Saturday as a Sabbath, lie should have decided in his favor. Cut tho Memphis decision as it appears before us in an improper and unwise attempt to coerce tha people of a different faith to observe a sabbath rcpugnnn, to thoir consciences.

less Yankee carriage maker two years ago married a lady in Memphis, Tenn., who gave him $ 1.500 to go into business with but he spent it and came to New York, whencc he wrote to her that he had another chance for business, and she came on with her child and gave him 81,700 more. Protending that his business called him to New Haven, ho wrote to her4o follow him, and npon her arrival there she found a letter directing her where to find him in Hartford. At Hartford all traces of the scoundrel disappeared and some of the people paid the deserted woman's hotel bill, and gavo her 822,50 to got back to Momphis with.

says an old proverb, and an instance of thi occurred in Cincinnati tho other day. An old man fell in love with a girl sixteen yoars old, and proposed to marry her but she, believing that May and December could novcr agree, rofused him. He had been all his life very abstemious but to drown his disappointment, wont on a foarful debauch, and was not sober again.— Ho died from delirium tremens in the courso of a week.

QUEER MAIIKIAOE.—In Athol, Mass., recently, a couplo was married, the bridegroom being 78 years old, tho bride 74 years old and tho officiating clergyman 92 It was tho second marriage of tho bridcgioom and tho third of tho brido.

A REVIVAL INCIDENT.—Last Saturday, at the meeting at Burton's Theatre, Henry Ward Bcecher made 'ho sweeping assertion that all present were sinners. "Not so," said a Methodist brother who suddenly jumped from his seat in a very exciting manner, "Not so for I havo been Rnnctified." "Glory to God in the highest," shouted Beeclier at the top of his voice.— "You ought to have been in Heaven long ago. you're not fit to live in this world." —Xcw York Day Book.

A fashionable lady in Buffalo is

going to havo a house built soon on one of the best sites in town. Everything about it i* to be sublimated and splendiferous. There is to bo a Porto Rico in front, a Pizarro in the rear, and a Lemonade all aonnd if. The water is to come in at the side of the house in an anecdote, the lawn in front is to be degraded, am some large fresh trees are to be supplanted into the Erie in the rear. This is the same lady who told Governor Clinton how remarkably stormy it is apt to be when the sun is passing the "Peno1scot."

As old age cornea creeping on, it brings with it many attendant infirmities. Loss of appetite and weakness impair the health, and want of activity makes the mind discontented and unhappy.
