Oca RELATION wrrn SIAM.—The cor respondent of the South has the following remarks regarding our commercial rela

tions with this distant and singular poo-

ple: ••Besides statistics show that within the last two or three years a commerce ha* rapidly grown np between this country and Siam. Parties have come out from California to establish trading honses in this remote point of Asia. The statistics show that within the last two or three years the entries at the port of Bangkok have #n Idenly and greatly increased, outnumbering those in the same time at Singapore, where the consular salary is 82,000. Yet no salary is at present attached to the -consulship at Bangkok. In the past the post has been a sinecure it is now one of the most important consulships hi the £a*A. The country, of large extent and reconrees has been within the last two or three years opened to the commerce of the great maraline powers. Our government lias but lately concluded a commercial treaty with Siam. Also, England and Franee have just concluded a similar treatise. Bangkok is the only port of Siam. The whole eotmncrre ol this immense conntry must pass through it. Certainly the position of consul at whnt tho only port and the capitol city of so extensive an empire as Siam should be properly aiul adequately salaried. The great expense of tho trial out to Siam nuist forbid the acecptancc b}r any proper person of the consular post there, if suffered to rent-tin unsalaried

WHY COUSINS SHOULD NOT MARRY.—In the annual report of tho Deaf and Dumb, we find the following conclusive argument against the marriage of cousins "From ten to twelve per cent, of doaf mutes arc tho children of cousins. It i* greatly to bo regretted that the law forbidding tho marriage of cousins did notpass the recent Legislature. These marriages area violation of a law of nature as is evident by the'afflictions'visited in almost every case upon their offspring in deafness, blindness and idioey, and ought to be a violation of human laws also.— The commonwealth has tho clear right to protect itself against those ill-starred matches, whose offspring it has to sustain, too frequently for life. Jt may be hoped that this important subject will not escape tho action of our legislators many years longer. It ia confidentially beleived that by forbidding marriages of this kind, and by proper care and treatment of infants laboring under the diseases stated, the number of deaf mutes in community ni'ght be reduced one half in a genera tion."

Ciiicioo AS SKKN nv AN EDITOn.—The Cleveland Plain Dealer has lately seen

Chicago through peculiar spectacles: Chicago is a bustling city. It was for mcrlj in Ulinoia, but now Illinois is in it Lake Michigan is situated on Chicago.— The principal productions of Chicago are corner lots, statistics, wind, the Democratic Press, and Long John Wentworth.— Tho population of Chicago is about six teen millions, and is 'rapidly increasing.' The people are very unassuming and moral—almost too much so. The real ostato dealers are all honorable men, like Brutns, and wouldn't tell a lie for anything. Chicago is not in the temperate cone, the habits of the peoplo not being at all in that way.
