^MhThe agent for thesalo of the beantiftjl volume entitled 'Odonomrnt to the tnrmory of llonry Clay," containing many beautiful eulogies on this venerable statesman not to be found in any other work, in now in this city soliciting subscriber?. We consider this work worth} of a place in every private library, as it is well print, cd and bonnd, atid will be delivered to subacribers ia a few weeks, at a p'ioo that cannot deter any from subscribing. We shall notice this work more at length tomorrow.

A GooDOrKiCKR.—We hare often thought that Vigo county, as a general thing, always had as good officers as any comity in the State, and at present we consider her peculiarly blessed, in several respect*, more than uraal. Onr present Sheriff, Wm. H. Stewart, we consider one of the ttiont prompt and efficient officers that we hare had in that capacity, for many years past. We have not hoard a single complaint orgml against him—all join in one universal sanction of the course he has pursued with the business entrusted to him by virtue of his office.

TnK U. 8. GOVERNMENT ASD TTIK MII.B Tit AUK.—Tbo Secretary of the Navy recently instructed Mr. Geo. N. Sanders, the navy agent of the port of New Yoik, to buy four premium mules for the use of the Navy Department and as an enconragomeot for improving the breed of mule*. They are the four animals that took the premium at the national fohr in this city und the mule exhibition ia Lexington.— Mr. Sanders bought them for the heavy cart work of the Brooklyn Navy Yard, paying of course enormous prices fur them It was found, however, that they \jrere not quite old enough for the diudgery they wens iotonded for, and *o the Secretary authorised Mr. S. to sell them, and the ooatractor of the transport somce of the Utah army has become the purchaser for •8,060.

Our Government nns#t imagine itself rich when it thinks it can afford to buy draught mule* for the Brtgham Young wrvioe at such fignvA Upon what clause of the United States constitution does the Democratic party rely for the authority of government to ex pea the public money for the improvement of the breed of mules? When shall we have something done for the improvement of the breed of office holders—a breed in fsr greater need of improvement than thai of mule* or jackassee.—horn. /oar. c«^
