XV We heard gentleman remark the other day lhat he thoaght it would be a good move for the Council to pnblish a monthly statement of the expenses of our city. Hundreds and tlionsands of dollars lire
paid ont year after year, and there arc not two men outside of the Board of Conn* cil who could account satisfactorily for five hundred dollars in a year. Wo think the suggestion a good one, fe it should be favorably considered by the Council. The citizens pay their taxes, and they have a right to know where their money goes to and for what canfce the treasury is continually kept drained. Let us have a clean list of items published monthly, then our citizcns will bo the better satisfied with their officers—provided their money is not squandered.
Bgfc_Mc8»rs. Whitwortli Si Isaacs, dealers in boots and ahoes, on Main street, have replenished their stock and are now celling at as low rates as any other house in ihe city. Their assortment is general, and calculated to suit all classes, both in jpriee and qualily. Give thom a call, they will do what is right. Country merchant# should remember that it will be to their interest to give the above house a call, before making their purchases, as wo are satisfied they canuot do better, even is Cincinnati. .....
jfcy James Baird, contractor for graveling, curbing and gutteiing Wabash street from Fourth to the river, has commenced work. The work done on the oast end of this street last fall, has stood tho test so well and so much beautified the street that we hope it will l»e pi'terncd aflet whenevera street is ordered to bo graded. Perluitient work is always clt««per than tho frcquunt repairing of half-d ue work*
JtjrTiw new French Store on Main street, has been filled up with fine dress goods, ready for the spring trade, aud we notice that it is daily crowded with ladies who know the qualities of goods, and also their value. This is a pretty guod indication that all is right at this establishunont. Go in and tnke a peep. '.r"* xr Fine Bass and Pickerel are caught daily out of the Wabash river. Our citizens are having rare sport, in this line.
Saira or Oak.—-The London Time* saj-s the average duration of a ship-of-war in a sea worthy state, built of British oak, ii only thirteen years of active service.— It hikes seventy' acres of ground eighty years to produce the timber. ,,
JEy Two young ladies, students at the Kontial School at New Britain, Ct., on Saturday afternoon, started for their hornet* in Meuden, where they proposed to spend the evening with their parents, and walked to Mcriden, a distance of fourteen milecf in about three hoate, reaching home about half ps^t sevcu. The day was clear and cold.
For ihe beat Oysters in the city,
