Miss Fanny Denlisto takes her farewell benefU. By particular request "Po-ca-hon-taa" will be repeated, also the "Eatmi Boy." and -4In and out of place." This is a good bill, and as Miss Denham has made many admirers sinco her stay here, we bespeak a paying kortte for tlje occasion.
Earning of the Itacifie Hotel.
Tbe burning of the Pacific Hotel/in St. Lou!*, on the morning of the 20th, is a horrible affair.— Tbe number of lives lost has not yet been ascertained, bat is variously estimated at from 10 to 30. Many were dreadfully mangled by jumping from the second and third atory. We learn that a man who was cleeping in the third story, after throwing hi* bed out and dropping Iris wife and two children jumped alter them and thus were sared without even a broken limb. A large dag that was about the tis« was the cacse of tome thirty persons escaping. It is said that he actually broke out two or three windows and went into the sleeping rooms and pulled the clothes off the beds and thus awoke the ilcpen who would hare soon been enveloped in th* devouring element.
The Are originated in the drug store underneath, in which was a large quantity of baniing'.fluld. The following are the names of the persons far known to bo killed. Bruce, McNitt, Burlcheart, Wast, Tattl, Surrill and Mrs. Jenny Jon ex and child, ail of Bt. Louis Johnson of Chicago, Henry Rochester, T. Hart and Strong of Rochester, N. Y.j Wm. Saunders, Taylor, Ge. Crane and Mi* Jnne*, residence unknown Chns. Davis and Wm. Cur ninj'hnm of Ibe Terro-Hauto and Alton Railrowl Miss Hunter, and Mr. aud Mrs. Hubbard.
Hcriom!y injured—James F. Geary, roportcr lor the 81. Louis Leader, E. Hays, New York Jonathan Jones M. Sowns Wm. Turner and Shnrpc, watchman of the house.
The fire caught in tho drug store, under the hotel and the flame* spread so rapidly that before the inmate* could be aroused, the stall ways were enveloped in fire, and all egress was cut off except by the windows*
Jt-ff" Vosterday being Washington's birth-day wo concluded to issue no paper.
9tW We have extremely cold weather
now. Plenty of good ice, sleighing, kc.
It appears from Louis Napoloon's
speech to tho Legislature, that the French will, after nil, co-operate with tho English
in the attack on Canton, and in tho Chi
nese wor generally. Tho Imperial speech,
in this, contradicts tho official statement
of the Mooiteur, to whioh we referred weok or two ago. Such contradiction
in a raro thing. Mr. Walsh, alluding to in his last letter from Paris, says that it is
th) first time within his memory that it
has happened.
As the combined force of the Frcneh and English must have attacked Canton long before this, we shall doubtless receive early information of the result or progress of the assault. The result, howerer, cannot be either doubtful or very remote.— The British naval force in tho Chinese waters numbered at the last accounts flfty-ono vetsels, iuclnding twent) steam gun-boats, several of whioh carry as many as three guns. The whole armament amounts to 505 guns, with 5,820 sailers, besides (,000 marines. Some additional(reinforcemcnUi were still expected, and it was expeotod that, including these, the force that could bo vpared from the garrison of Hong Cong, and the French assistance that was counted on, there would be ready by Christmas as many as ten thousand men to operate against the refractory Celestials. The operation can hardly fail to he speedily effective.
