The Position of Stephen A. Boag-
las.
The Republican party is loud in it* pnnegjrics as to the bold stand mn?e by Douglas in reference to the admission of Kansas, and is ready to receive him into its own bosom. But Dongla*, unforlnn*toly, won't go there—ho stands npon national rfnd constitutional ground, which is as far removed from the position of thd Elack Republican of the North as it is from that of Southern fire-eaters. Douglas is no agitator, bat one who amid the storm of sectional passion is able to survey the whole field—one, who appreciates the value and importance of the Union, and as sneh he will command the respect and support of all national conservative men.
The Republican* are with him for the moment, but, as slavery agitation in their only hope of existence as a party, tbe settlement of the Kansas question will not prove to be the realization 6f all their aims. They will most certainly bccome aggressive in their character and attempt to continue the agitation within the borders of Missouri and Kentucky. But, is reflecting men of all parlies, will sicken at the excess to which the eternal nigger question has been cartied—and will pcrceiro that there are far more important issues of national policy and cconomy to be considered—the doom of nil sectional parties is at hand, and tho bonds of Uuion will be knit togethor in closcr and more indissoluble ties thau if thoy had never been threatened by tho frenzied wrath of sectional passion and individual ambition, .."'I,.,-/.. ...
A Disgrace

Yesterday's mail brought us tho tidings of another death from starvation in Evans ville. It is not the death of a prdfligatc and drunkard, but that of an industrious man, A brum Perry, a machinistby trndo, who starved himself to feed a wife and three children, and who, at the last moment, while seeking for money wherewith to pay his rent, fell dead in the streets of an onlightened, christian city.
Tho picture is too horrible to contemplate and too disgraceful to record. We can conoeive of death from starvation in the densely crowded cities of the Kast, where the sufferings oi the poor are so great, and tho instances so numerous, that ceaseless charity is unable to reach them all in timo—but that in a town of but a low thousand inhabitants, where provisions are so cheap and poverty is so rare thero should occur two instances of death from starvation within so short a period of time* is aotually startling. It speaks but little for the spirit of charity in their midst, and is a sad comment npen the character of a christian people and a religious community.
Pooplo do not starve to death Without making an appeal for aid, for famine will dissipate those sontiments of pride, which induce suffering mortality to endure many privations before they Acknowledge their necessities.
Tho people of Evansville should look to these thiags, for such tidings pass trumpot-tonguod throughout the country, a disgraee to their own community—a shameful stigma upon the peoplo of Indi{u% en atMS CW3T*

lican parly, which never had any existence south of Ma*on Dixon's line?— People who live in glass houses shouldn't throw stones—and although the position of the Democratic party is a lamentable one for its nnitv and existence &s a political paity, it is hard for those who weretlie first to assume a sectional position to Upbraid their adversaries for following in their footsteps. But this is a fast age—we are blind to our own infirmities and errors, but quick to perceive and hasty to speak of those of others who have fallen into the same slough in which we have been actually wallowing.
Illinois Baptist, of
January 14, says that this strange infatuation is again revived. It made its appear* Rnee at a protracted meeting among the Methodist at Indiin Grove. Tho scenes are described as very exciting. From fifty to a lnindred were jerking at the sametirae. Their hands, shoulders, foot, and head would be violently thrown into most grotesque and apparently painful shapes. The women's bonnets would fly off, their hair become disheveled, and in some instance snap like a whip. In some instances it attack unbelievers in it, and unconverted men who triod to resist it by folding their arms and wrapping them tightly around their bodies, but in ppite of themselves, their shoulders, fmt one and then the other, would be jerked back till they lost all control of themselves.
Do lge, wife of a
captain who was killed at Agrs, while lying upon a sofa in her residence at Deptford, was startled to see, as she supposed, bar husband standiug before her. She rose to meet him, but he was not there. She even ran to tho garden after him, presuming he was playing a lark with her. When she told her friends what she bad seen, they laughod, and pronounced it a fantasy.— Subsequently, it was ascertained that Mr Dodge iyas killed on the very night of the apparation.
SracuoaTioH.—A com
pany was formed in New York, which agreed with the underwriters and shippers to keep New York harbor open for tho passage of vessels through the ice during tho winter. The pay stipulated was two hundred dollars par day. Thero has not been ice enough for a mint julep all winter, yet the company's beat has Iain at tbe wharf earning its $200 per diem, in the most comfortable manner.
Fortnne always grows tired of carrying the same man on her back.—Ex. We would not care much if she would throw us npon her back for a while, for we begin to think that Poverty never gets weary of carrying a fellow, though she does not trotem him very well. jOf" Soraohody describes the absurd appearance of a man dancing a polka in this wise: "He looks as though he bad a bole in his pocket and was tiding to skake a shilling downthe leg of his trowsers."
