Neutrality Laws.

Gen. Quitman, of Mississippi, lias sibTnitteJ a proposition for tlic repeal ol our STentrality Laws, \rliich is designed to give, wc suppose, filibusters full power to prosecute their heathenish and inhuman conquests, in whatever quarter they may see proper to designate. We have had enough of theso out-laws, and we have too much confidenco in the wisdem of Congress (as corrupt as it is,) to even think they will consider, for a moment, such a proposition. In 1854 a similar proposition wai laid before Congress, by Mr. Slidell, to expressly enable this same Gen. Quitman to prosecute his piratical crusade against Cuba. Now that Quitman has crawled into power through the filthy slime of party trickery, he feels like giving the same piirilegcs to others, that he asked through Sir. Slide!!.

If our Neutrality Laws were repealed, or even suspended for a short time, our country would be led into a war with some of out neighbors before two years passed over our heads. As this would certainly be the inevitable result, and as no possible good could come of it, we cannot see why (hare is a man in the country who could be induced to harbor such a notiou at all. If such a man really lives in this age of civilization, ho is only fit for treason and stratagems, and is totally unworthy of notico. Let our Neutrality Laws remain as they arc—they are but a pledge of friendhhip and good will to all the nations of carib, and as such shonld never bo repealed or broken.

JWrTho causes of the unliealthinoss of the National Hotel at Washington have boon revealed during the work of cleansing it. In tho oellar was fonsd decaying and poisonous matter sufficient to kill an army of men, if subject to its exhalation. There were removed from this part of the houso alono, sixty-sevon cart loads of putrificd stuff, part of which consisted of the contents of the privy vaults, which had flowed into tho cellar, and tho remainder as the refuse of tho kitohen and pantry. No wondor dittOASO aud death dwelt there.

B0" The Fort Harrison Guards wore out in full uniform on Saturday. They made a fino appearanc.and producoi quite a military spirit. May their colors mver bo trailed in tho dust.

BunoniiY.—A young man namod James II. llicklin, was arrested a day or two sinco for breaking open and robbing the storo of Mr. K. French, in tho little town of Hartford on tho E. & C. Railroad.— He was hold to bail in the sum of 8300 which failing to give, he was committed to the Torre-IIaute jail.

gW A bill has passed the Ohio Legislature repealing the law passed a few years ago, denying tho use of the jails in that State, ior the confinement of fugitive slaves.

Queen Victorian Crown. It is reported, says the Louisville Journal, that tbe Qoecn of England is about to lose her crown. This event i* not to be caused by a revolution, nor

Revival

ii

of

it to be at

tended by either strife or bloodshed. It is to be effected legally, in pursuance of a decree issued by the English Judges, and, strange to say, with the acquiescenco of Her Majesty. Tho explanation is as follows The King of Hanover, as eldest male descendant of George III aud head of tho House of Hanover, has laid claim to the principal part the British regalia, amongst which is Iler Majesty's crown, on the ground that part of it was brought over to England by George I—that the additions subsequently made to its splendor were paid for out of tho private funds of George III, and that, as all property goes in the male line, he (George V., of Hanover) is entitled to the crown. The claim was referred to the Judges of England, and they have decided that their Queen must yield, and Victoria herself is prepared to obey tho mandate. Tho English papers are not quite so good-humored at the probable loss of so many hundreds of thousands of pounds sterling, partly because it is not their wont to part readily with what they fancy belongs to them, ami partly because they have a sttong suspicion that they may be called on to buy a new crown. Tho attempt is made to console Victoria for her loss by changing her title to that of Empress of the British Empire, in view of the direct subjection of India to her sway. Others assure her Majesty that she has no reason to regret the loss of the Hanoverian crown, because it was a very "ugly form of head-gear." Tho Hanoverians aro in ecstacies. The London Spectator contains the following graceful allusion to the subject, which, we have no doubt, truly expresses the sentiments of the estimable lady who rules so worthily over the English people: '•As to jewels, if Queen Victoria hns not learned from Cornelia that the cradle is the mother's true jewel-box—if Prince Albert has not taught her that a virtuous wife is ir. herself a -'crown"—her own sense will tell her how independent is the first woman in the firft empire of any adornments save those which have been conferred upon her by powers higher than those of Emperors."

-—The Terre Haute Union says that an 'unprecedented revival of religion' is in progress in tho Methodist Church, in that city, under the pastoral charge of Rev. P. Wiley. There has been a large accession ofmsmbership, and numerous conversions. If Brown, of the Union, and Cookerly of the Journal, can only be roached by it, success will be "unprecedented" indeed. We prav unceasingly for them both.— La/. Jour.

The coin loaned to the merchants of Hamburgh by the Austrian National Bank, left Vienna by a special train on Sunday afternoon, and was delivored at Hamburgh at noon on Tuesday. Fourteen large railroad wagons, with two engines provided, lest any accident might happen, brought the valuable treasure into the railway station, and sixteen double horse wagons were required to convey it from thence to the Bank, to tho no small astonishment of tho wondering multitude.

How to Save Yornt Shoe Soles.—It consists merely in melting together tallow and common rosin, in the proportion of two parts of the former to one part of the latter, and applying the preparation hot to tho soles of the boots or shoos—as much of it as the leather will absorb. One substantial fanner declares that this little receipt alone has been worth more than tho price of five years* subscription to the newspaper publishing it.

Wbat recently bef« II I Unto a farmer down in Maine* Whilo digging of a well. Full many a yard he dug and delved,

And still he dug ia vain "Ala k!" quoth he, "e'en water seems Prohibited in Maine!" And still he dug and delved away,

And still the well was dry The only water to be found Was in the farmer's eye

For by the breaking of the bank That tumbled from its station, All suddenly his hopo was dashed

Of future liquidation!

And now his sands were running fast, And he had died, no doubt, But that just when the well cared in,

He happened to be out.

"Aha!—I have a lucky thought"— Exclaimed this wicked man— "T^dig anew this wretched well

I see a pretty plan:—

"I'll hide me straight, and when my wife And ere my neighbors know, What's happened to my digging here,

They'll think that I'm below!

'•And so to save my precious life, They'll dig the well no doubt, E'en deeper than it was dug at first,

Before tbey find me out!

And so he hid him in the barn Through all the hangry day, To bide the digging of his well

In this deccitful way.

But list what grief and shame befel This false ungratelul man, The while he slyly watched to sec

The working of his plan

The neighbors all with one accord Unto each other said:— "With such a weight of earth above,

The man is surely dead."

And then the wife, with pious care, Ail needless cost to save, Said—"Since the Lord hath willed it so,

E'en let this be his grave!"
