TCRRIPIC STORM IN LOWER CALIFORNIA —LA PAZ IN LLUINS,—A correspondent says:

On the 80th of Soplembcr, about nine o'clock in the evening, commenced the hurricane which of late years has become periodical in these parts. It increased gradually in violence till about 11 o'clock and then gradually subsided till 3 o'clock in the inoi uing—the l*t of October. The terriflic fury of tho galo in said by tho inhabitants to have surpassed that of any preceding one within recollection, and though not attended (at least in La Paz) with the aame loss uf lifo-aa the'storm of 1856, its other results were oven more diaasterous. Thirteen vowels—everything in* fact in port, with the single exception of a launch in laguna and a schooner in Pichilinqne— were driven ashore almost at tho onset, thp Jeantftq, of San Francisco, holding on to tho last. Had the coast been rocky, the loss of lifo would have been fearful. The Ksperanza, chartered by the Government, was after great exertion, floated yesterday. Thu Blancarte, Paquotte, Pearl, Jeanette, and others still remain high and dry.— The crew of tho last go up to-day to GunyIUas. Seven-tenths of the inferior dwellings of the town are heaps of ruins, and many of the better class, stHi as tho Dishop's palace. Mr. Kimball's, 6tc., arc in a similar condition. There is perhaps scarccly a house in La Pax which does not presont evidences of tho fearful fury of the storm. Ail the barracks are a wreck, the streets obstructed by fallen trees, and tho gardens almost destroyed.

But oue solitary traveler has reached us from San Jose since the catastrophe: Sixty houses, the church, and all the pahn and sugar plantations are reported utter* Iv destroyed, with tbe loss of six lives in tie suburbs. Tho sea there ami at Cape San Lucas swept a mile and a half inland carrying away everything in ita devastating route. At the Cape, Captain Richie's large house was swept off with all the smaller houses in the settlement, and loss of lifo.

Commissioners are now employed taking a census of the losses in ordef to report to the General Government the ruined and impoverished condition of the country. Meanwhile the troops are being rapidly withdrawn, like locusts flee* ing from a country already pillaged. The first detachment left in the Brisa a few days ago, and are to be followed by a majority of tho remainder in the commencement of the eturning month. The sole redeeming feature of tbe tempest has been the liberating of a large quantity of tbe precious metal in the place of Las Gallinas and the uncover£hg*oi a valoaBle ma of ailrer in the *eighborhH*lcf San Anto-

Mr. Fillmor#'* Habits and Health. A co*re*pouUcut of the i?*m YoiiS6b server gives the following "rauonnte of the remarkably good health and looks of ox President Fill mono. It is rtplcto with instruction

It was my privilege to meet our hon ored ex-Pre&ident a tew evenings since At asocial entertainment. Sitting down for a few moment's conversation with him, 1 was struck with hit singularly healthy appearance. Kverything about his noble framo indicated a man of iron constitution the orcct posture, the cheeks of rud glow, the full muscular developments, would have been glad to converse with him about political affairs, in which his interest seems unabated but my curiosity was chiefly excited to know the secret of such a vigorous hid age in one who had under gone such a vast amount of public labor as he. "Yon appear to be in exoollont health, sir/' I rematked.

MI

have taken but one dose of medicine in thirty-seven years," ho replied, "and thai was forced upon me by my friends, and was entirely unnecessary." "It Is rather remarkable, sir," I "said, "that one, who has passed through such a cancer of toil, care, and vicissitude aB you have, should maintain a condition of uoia~ terrnpted bodily vigor." "I owe the fiact," he replied, "to an originally strong constitution, to an education on a farm, and to life-long habits of regularity and temperance. I never smoked or chewed tobacco I never knew intoxication. Throughout all my public life I maintained the same regular and systematic habits of living to which I had previously been accaBtomed, I never allowed my usual hours for sleep to be interrupted.

The Sabbath I atMays kept at

a day of rest.

Besides being a religious

duty, it was essential to health. On commencing my Presidential career I found that the Sabbath had frequently boon em ployed by visitors for private interviews with the President. I determined to put an end to this custom, and ordered my door-keeper to meet all Sunday visitors with an indiscriminate refusal.. While Chairman of the Committee on Ways and Means, in Congress, and during my entire Presidential career, my labors were always onerous and often excessive, but I never suffered an hour's sickness through them all."

Our conversation was interrupted by a summons from our hostess to the supper room. Oysters, ice-croam, turkey and jel lies were spread out upon the generous table, and the guests attacked the luxurious repast without mercy either to it or to them selves.

I-watched the ex-President with no little interest. Everything which could tempt the palate was offered to him, but to all he politely said, "No, I thank jou.M .He simply sipped a cup of tea, to avoid being singular, with fiis nsual courtesy. I cast my eye over the room-full of guests, and could not see one who looked as healthy as he—not one who, seemingly, with as much impunity might indulge in a surfeit at bed-time. How the example of his tcmperancc affected others, I know not, but I went aivny from that evening party with a now resolve to cat less, that I might work more and to better purpose.

A WOWAN'B ADVANTAGE.•'—A Woman may say what she likes to yoti, without the risk of getting knocked down for it.— She can tako a smoke after dinner, while her bnsband has to go to work. She can dress herself in neat and tidy calico for a dollar, which her husband has to earn and fork over. Sho can go forth into the strcctt without being invited to treat at every coflee-house. 3"ho can paint her face if it is too pale, and ilonr it if loo red. She can stay at home in tinio of war and wed again if her husband is killed. Sho can wear corsets, if too thick—-other fixings if too thin. She oan oat, drink and be merry, without its costing her a cent. She can got divorced from her husband whenever she seos one alio likes better.— Vnd she can go in debt all over nntil he warns the public, by advertisement, not to trust her on his account any longer.

QUESTION FOR A \VIFE»-\V« do not know who wrote thn following but it ought to be printed in letters of gold "Do you recollect what your feelings were immediately after you had spoken the first unkind word to your hnsband? Did you not feel •shamed and grieved, and yet too proud to admit it? That was, is, and ever wilt be yonr evil genius! It is the tempter"which labors incessantly to destroy your peace* which cheats yott with aa evil delnsion that your husband deserved your asgor, when he really most required your love.— It is a cancer which feeds on those unspeakable emotions you felt on the first pressure of his hand and lip. Never forget the manner in which the duties of that calling can alone be fulfilled. If your husband is hasty, your example of patience wilt chide as well as toach him. Tour violence may alienate his heart* and your neglect impel him to desperation Your soothing will redeem him —your soAwas subdue him and the good tutored twinkle of those eyes, now fitting beenitifally with priorKsaa tears, will make him all
