THURSDAY MORNING A 18
Democracy.
Onr democratic neighbors seem not a little perplexed at the present condilion of the Vharmonious Democracy" —an3 call, most lustily, upon their Southern allies to know whether it is true that they intend to have them op-}W»\iat-ik£y c§nsn&r the ftnKfatitieii tal principles of the party. Why, bless yoor good tools, neighbors, hasn't it alway^ been just this.way?—. Has^potfDemocracy alnays had as many faces a cbomeiion ha* colors, and has it not pot forward first one and then the other, just as soiled its convenience? The only difference betweeo its condition now and heretofore is, that it has got at last so fixed lhat it can't get along withontshowing two fact* at once. It'* bad—we know it is—bat then it comes of trying to blow hot and cold at the same time.— And its getting worse every day —*r mnch that no body can now tell what democracy is, Mr. Huchanan says it# one thing and Mr. Dotjglns snys its another thing. Onr neighbors agree with Pouglas—-bi|t that, according to the parly test, is not Dcmocracy. Therefore, our neighbors are not Democrats. But wo will wait till after the 8th January Convention, and see whether the spirit of the old "hero of New Orleans" can be softicieiitly invoiced to calm the troubled waters and drive the political storm-king back to his hiding place again. "There •re breakers ahead" we fear, and wo admonish our neighbors to steer clear of them. The harmonious Democracy!" Ha, ha, ha.

We were not many—wre who stood Before the iron sleet that day, Yet many a gallant spirit would Gare half his re«ra, if ho but could
Uare been with us at Monterey.
Now here, now there, the shot is hailed, In deadlrdrifts of fiery.fpraj,. Yet not a single soldier quailed When wounded comradcsmnad them wail'd
Their dying shouts at Monterey
And on, still on our column kept Through walls of flame its withering way. Where fell the dead, the living slept Still charging on the gnns which swept
The slipery streets of Monterey,
The foe himself recoiled agast, When striking where he strongest lay, We swooped its flanking baUeries past, And braving full the murderous blast,
Stormed home the towres of Monterey
Our banners on these turrets wave, And there the evening bugles play Where orrange boughs above their grave Kecp^reen the memory of the brave
Who lou^ht and fell at Monterey.
We were not many—we who press'd 4 Beside the brave who fell that day I But who of us has not confessed He'd rather share their warrior rest,
Than not have been at Monterey. 1

It. will be seen that the Bank, with a circulation of only £2,284.049 00, has, of gold atid silver i"h her yaults, $ 1,009,264 50, with t432,883 00 of Eastern exchange, besides her other resources. This result, which has been attained by an Institution so recently established, and which has been operated during a time when many Institutions of greater age, commanding the confidence of the public, have failed to meet their liabilities, confirms in my mind the confident hope that the Bank of the State of Indiana will meet the best anticipations of the people of the State, and fully equal in its safety and usefulness its predecessor, which is now engaged in elosing ite business, as required by its charter.
