"Yon, I know, are too gallant as well as too just, to refuse to receive the little plea'I wont to put in, against the awful accusations of "extravagance," 'folly' and what not— that fashionable abuse of fashionable abuses—now levelled so coutinuously at the weaker sex, in every printed sheet which reaches ns, that sitting at home, we are qnito bombarded with onr own errors—learn to consider ourselves accountable for the present 'hard times'—smuggle our new bonnets surreptitiously into the hoosc—and dare, only by stealth, to wear onr Lest dresses. But these things have come to a criscs: worms will torn, and so will butterflies, though born cntterpillars so will the 'ornamental' or butterfly sex. At least,we object. Yes! we object! "There are many 'counts in the indictment.' We are too extravagant, too vain, too silly, too ignorant, too undignified, too ambitious. We arc to® eager to follow fashion, to court notoriety, to seek admiration—we dance, we dress, we flirt, too much ue walk and cook too little we are not polite, amiable, economical, witty or domestic, and have, in fact, too many Rights, and no Wrongs. his views on 'Oar La-
die?,' t#kfs care to premise, that he does not number himself, especially
F1 heartily empathizes, that he makes their grumblings his own. The touching eneigy with Inch he complains of thoe little trifles of courtesy and respect which dignify and grace lifo everywhere, and which are so notnral to every true gentleman,
that he wonld as «oon stop to 'count
the cost'of the air he breathes, as of
the gentle service he renders, whether it be received with cold selfishness, as in a few cases, or gratefully accepted, as in many. These complaints, we say, call up in our minds, dark visions of that elderly bachelor with an enlarged figure, a rusty coat, and an expression of unutterable sourness and scorn, who never gives up his scat to a lady in car or coach, growls audibly at children and bandboxes in an omnibus—never helps a lady over a crossing—never offers an arm or an umbrella—never picks up fan or haudkcrchicf, hub treads over them instead, steps on dresses, helps himself first dt the table, and bitterly denounces the whole female sex, if his dinner or his journey, be delayed half a second in their honor. We care not to Interfere with 'the score of his nge,' nor yet to hazard a guess how many scores it is, but we venture to assert that no youth—sitting opposite his pretty, intelligent sisters, and graceful dignified mother, with the fascinations of his circle of lady friends yet lingering about him, and the truly American respect for their sex in which he has been ed ucalod tempering his speech and restraining his pen—ever indulged in the'sour grape' style of wit with which this article abounds and we must find it hard to believe that so much wisdom is of later date than the century "Item.—Wb are mere butterflies of fashion—pietly enough to look at, but ignorant, silly, and vapid in conversation. "Why," a.sks the same sipient writer,'are the parties and bulls, where womeu congregate, only a show place for their external charms?" Per haps, because a picture is not an opera, and an actor not necessarily an author. If you go to a ball, you go to dance, y«u go to dress, you go to see and bcM'cn, to laugh, to flirt, to eat ice creams, to chatter nonsense— in fine, to umuse yourself. Why, then alio ild you expect more than the programme hfifords—insist on being wise, when ynu came to be foolish to talk sense, when you came to talk nonsense to moralize, when you ought to waltz, and philosophize when you ought to polka Perhaps the fair fingers renting on your arm have been as deeply dyed with ink as your own. If they were, you would not know it, for to be 'literary'Is worse than to be a murderess, and the most courageous 'beau* date not trust himself in the society of a 'blue.' Anj unusual display of wit or intelligence, procures its author the name of a 'sharp girl' and the soft meaningless smiles and pretty inanities of the 'sweet, amiable creat nre,1 who has just sense enough to skillfully attraot her beaux, and talk ball-room nonsense, is far more 'taking' to admirers, than the quick intelligence and bright eyes of a more intellcctnal rival, who not wise enough to conceal her wisdom. Say what you will, a man would rather be looked up to by an ignorant wife, than advised by wise one and his ideal of a woman is nearer the standard of Byron's Medora than of Tennyson's Priitcefis. He may admire and respect the one—-he loves and marries the other
"Then blame us not if we appear soulless, Perio, since you will have it so and don't complain of our Ignorance till you are sure of it. The yonng lady who eats her ice so tran
quilly by your side may have the soul of a Sappho, or the peu of a Hemans the fair partner of your last schottische might confound you by ber knowledge of the clasf-k-* the pretty girl who hangs so hcMessly on your arm in the crowd, in mental strength and moral enrage might well take yon on hers yo ir lovely »•#-«-»«, who looks up so inno vndy into the fact? of her

Since there is but one object in all, oh shall we look among tht?se trained and practised beauties—who may well be cold, since all the generous warmth of their hearts is chilled from childhood, and rigidly correct, with no natural feelings to sway them, fer models to free and ingenious American girls, who, without French restraints or English reserves, follow the unbiassed dict-ttes of their own hearts! The carping critic above, who grants American women beauty, while he denies them the possession of every other quality lovable in woman, should remember that his worlk of New York, front which he judges us, is only the Paris of America—ihe Sodom of the New world and that from sea to sea, a nation of happy husbands and virtuous wives, of tender fathers and loving daughters, protests agaiuat. the railing injustice of this modern Diogenes!
