When we commenced the pnbfi cation of (he Daily and Weekly Union, we rewired to perme an honorable ooane is all matters pertaining to politics as well as all business necessarily connected with a news and j*b office. In these particular* we hare a dear conscience of having kept this reaolre inviolate, .and (ear no charge that mav be tramped op to onr detriment, coming from whatsoever soorn it may. We hare also endeavored to regard those in the same business as being honorable competitor*, but our faith has, more than once, been shaken in relation to the

orable

When we bad got fairly initiated into our present business, we drew up a bill of prices, with Mr. Hudson, of the Express, for advertising, and each pledged the other to abide by them. These prices were near fifty percent, lower than the Indianapolis prices, and even lower than Evansville, New Albany, La fa rctta, and periiaps other points in the Stale. In tw«. instances where each of us had the same advertisement, and the bill of pries called for $10,00, he presented hiabill for $6, in one

CMS,

In addition to the above course, which was adopted sololr to iujur* us in the estimation of the twa advertisers we refer to, we have, time and again, heard of remark* made upon the street to thh effect: "The Union office would die in three, four, six or twelve montfw." "It had nothing to live upon." "When the Journal started a Daily the Union would soon go down, beentw it got its principal support from the Democrats." "It was not worthy of patronage," "executions would soon ent it up," and so on Now, these steps to injure us, we have borne for near nine months without f* ling very bvl over them, as they were pot forth In a ooramonity that knew better, and at whioh hundreds would laugh behind tha slanderer's i»ack.

A few days ago a Mr. Palmer-—Prof. Palmer, of Springfield, Ills., notoriety, camc into our city, and through some means got into the E\prt*M ..Rice first, contracted for his b'll pri tins and made some inquiry about the number of papers In the city, as he wished to adrertlse In all. II* was told that the "Union office was a poor affair, and that Its daity circulation was trilling, and that it did not de serve the patronage of any one." The Profesaor was advised to keep away, and, natural ly, as a sap-headed stranger, he did so. He inserted near a half column advertisement In the otherNwo papers, and did not even show his face Inside of the Union ©dee. We do not aim the above quoted sentence as a literal copy of tho conversation, but it embraces the substance fin a mild««r form) which we procured from a roli-ihle source, and which we have reason to believe, from the fket that this Professor was never inside of our office.

He spoke of Mr. Crawford as being one among his first acquaintances in Terre-Haute, years ago, and when he looked around he could see but a few more of his early acquaintances left. How forcibly we felt the troth of this remark when we rocognised the ten pall bearers, who acemed to have been taken from the old citizens, and asked ourself—Take these ten out of onr midst, and how many of that class will there be left? Indeed the number will be small. A few more months and a new generation will possess the old homesteads.

COINCIDENCE.—On Friday last, a woman ia Corydon, whose name we did not learn, was struck by lightning and instantly killed. At the same instant, just as the lightning flashed, hor sister, who was lying on a sick bod, expired. This is certainly one of the most singnlar fatalities of whioh we have ever heard.

We hear of nnmerous instances of damage by lightning during the storm of Friday last. A buggy in which was seated a gentleman and daughter was struck by lightning a short distance from Hanlinshnrgh, Washington county. Tho back part of the buggy and wheels was torn to pieccs, but sw inge to say both the occupants were nninjnred. The same stroke of lightning felled a man from his horseHe was paralysed for a time, bnt soon recovered.—N.

The plan ho proposes is to encase a cable like that prepared for the Atlantic Ocean in a soluble compound (tho composition of which is not now mentioned,) capable of floating on the surface of the water for a time. The coating he proposes to use for this purpose he supposes wonld hold it on the waves while about five wiles of cable were played out from the vessel before it began to dissolve, and as it would dis solve gradually, so the cable would sbk gradually to the bed of the ocean. By this means he calculated that there would always be about five nubs of cable lying on the snrface of the water in the wake of the vessel and the remainder wonld describe an incline to within one hundred or two hundred feet of* the bed of the occaa,: so that there would he comparatively little strain and consequently leca liability ol breakage. The cable wonld decend in the ocean almost horizontally, instead of perpendicularly.

Our special dispatches* announce the destruction by fire of the Lonisvtlle and New Orleans packet Rainbow, noar Napoleon, Ark. The loss of life is variously estimated at from fifty to seventy-five. The Rainbow was bnilt at Louisville, three year* since, for the Louisville and Hudson packet trade, but entered the southern trado last season. She is owned by her commander, HoLt.cnorr, of Leavenw-orth, Ind., and clerks,Messrs. WM. and M. IFRSTOK, and MARSHALL H.u.nisBtj, of Louisvil!e. She was worth about $25,000, and, we understand, was insurod in Louisville.
