•PROPHECY
htrm.—The
New York Evening Post, in an article on the scandalous developments of the Woodman and Feroua ca*e, which occupies three four columns in the papers, makes the subjoined remarks:
In judging the parties to this scandalous iniquity, however, let us beware that we do not visit npon one or two individuals, sins for which ail our fashionable society is more «r less responsible. Rich and well dreSsed profligates area prominent, and we had almost said the favorite feature of •iho New York, drawing room.— Onr city is e^een now rife with other stories «f intimacies as disgraceful as any thing wfetch had been disclosed in the relations of Mrs. Woodman aud Fur Diss, and, w« blush lo add, as mercenary. We have no seoiaJ standard which sees a mark of infamy upon the rone. If he dances and dresses wel!, and has leisure to devote to the entertainment of idle women, there are always enough to be flattered and beguiled by his attentions into familiarities which result in dishonor, if not disgrace.

We see by the last Mattoon
Gazette that Mr. Van Perm hasrotired from the editorial chair of that paper, and that Mr. R. W. Houghton has superceded htui. The Gazette has been conducted rather in the old lino chut* heretofore, but its present editor advocates the old Whig platform, to which wo say amen. May success attend the Gazette.

FACT.
dor the fcead of "Poetic Prophecy," the (Jiaomeati Gazette quotes the following passage from Byron's "Curse of Minerva,' as foreshadowing the the present British calamities in India: "Look to the East, where GaogcV swarthy race Shall shake your tyrant empire to its base Lo, there rebilHon rears her ghastlj head, And pares the Nemesis of native dead Till Fndus rolls a deep purpurea! flood And claims his long arrear of Northern Mood*"
In order to understand the amonnt of prophecy in these lines ono has simply to remember that they were published in 1811, and that only a few years before "rebellion" had actually reared "her ghastly head" in India, and done everything that the lines portray. The passage, instead beiDg "poetic prophecy," is, in fact, pootic history.—-LouisvUle Journal.
JORYMAH MADE IKSAVB.—At
the
trial last week of A. J. Utt, for murder in Christian county, 111., an iucident occurred which we presume has no parallel in legal practice. The prisoner was acquitted, but it seems that one of the jurors during the trial was so impressed or affected that he became insane, though the fact of his insanity was not known to the court until after the jury was discharged. He was observed to act very strangely while in the jury box frequently shielding his face from the counsel, and at other times dodging from ono side to the other.
When the jury retired to make up their verdict, he seemed to think that he himself was the criminal, and for along time he refused to sign the ver diet, alleging that he would be brought to trouble if he did, and insisted that the prisoner should he fined 81000 instead of being hung. As soon, as the jury was discharged, he started through the woods apparently on his way home, six miles distant, and has not since been heard of.—Alb. Transcript.
M3T When Col. Lee, of New York, was collecting subscriptions for the equestrian bronze statue of Washington, now standing a monument of patriotism and art at the corner Union Park, he had occasion to visit an old curmudgeon in the neighborhood, and, pulling out lm subscription paper, requested hiin to add his name to the lint. But old Lucre declined rospectfully. '*1 do not see," he said, "what benefit this statue will be to me and five hundred dollars is a great deal of money to pay for the gratification of other people." "Benefit to you?" re plied the colonel "why, sir, it will benefit you more than anybody else The statue can be seen from every window of your house it will be an ornament, and add dignity to the whole neighborhood, and it will perpetually remind you of the Father of his Country—the immortal Washington!" "Ah! colonel," answered old Lucre, "I do not require a statue to remind me of him, for I always carry Washington here." and he placed his hand npon his heart. "Then let me tell yon," replied Colonel Lee, "if that is so, ail I have to say is, that you have got Washington in a tight place!"
HOARDIXO BAKK BILLS.—TheN.Y. The profit of the bank in the transaction wns dear two hundred per cent.—two thousand dollars. The bills were paid to John in 1835 and he carefully wrapped them in a napkin, where they nave remained ever since. He returned them to the bank pinned np in the same slip# that be received with the same marks. The Savings' Bank interest would have been nearly $20001*

Daguerreotypes by Tilghtnlng.
A conn try woman has recently arrived in Paris fro* the department of Sei ne-rt^-Manre, wl»o should be presented to the Academy of Sciences. This woman was a short lime since watching a cow ia as open field, when a violent storm arose. She took refuge under a tree, which, at the iasUat. was struck by lightning the cow was killed and she was felled to the earth senseless, where she was soon after found, the slorm having ceased with the flash which felled her. Upon removing her clothing, the exact image of the cow killed by her side was found distinctly pressed upon her bosom.
This curioos phenomenon is not without precedent. Dr. Franklin mentions the case of aman who was standing in the door of a boase in a thunder storm, and who was looking at a tree directly before him when it was strack by lightning. On the man's brea&t was left a perfect daguerreotype of the tree.
In 1841 a magistrate and miller's boy were struck by lightning near a poplar tree, rn one of the provinces of Fraocu and upon the breast of each were found spots exactly resembling the leaves of the poplar.
At a meeting of the French Academy of Scieaoes, January 25th, 1847, it was stated that a woman of Lugano seated at a window during a storm, was suddenly shaken hy some invisible power. She experienced no inconvenience from this, but afterwards discovered that a blossom, spparently torn ftom a tree by a light niug stroke, was completely imaged upon one of her limbs, and it remained thete till her death.
In September, 1825, tire brigantine 11 JSv*n Serta was anchored in the Armiro Bay at the entrance of the Adriatic Sea, where she

lightniug. In obedience to a superstition, the Ionian sailors had attached a horseshoe to the mizzenmast, as a charm against evil. When the vessel was struck a sailor who was seated by this mast was instantly killed. There were no marks or bruises upon his person but the horse shoo was perfectly pictured npon his back.
A Spanish brigantine was once struck in the Ratle de Z.iute. Five (tailors were at the prow—three of tiiem awjike and two Bleeping. One of the latter was killed, and upon undressing him, the figures 44, phin and well formed, were found under hi6 left breast. His comrades declared that they were not there before his death, but their original was found in the rigging of the vessel. But the most singular fact connected with this affair, are set forth in tho report of the physician, Dicapulo, who says: "After undressing the young sailor, we found a band of linen tied about his body, in which were gold piecos and two parcls done up in paper. The one on the right side contained a letter frotn Spain, three guineas, and two, halfrgnineas the othor, a letter, four guineas, a half guinea, and two smaller pieces. Neither the pieces, the paper, nor tho linen presented the least appearance ol'fire. But upon his right shoulder were six distinct circles, which preserved the natural color, and appeared as though traced upon the black «kiru These circles which all touched at one point, were of three different sizos, and exactly cor responded with the gold pieces in the right side of his belt.—N.
