November, the gloomiest and saddest month of all the year a month in which despondency, sorrow and suicides are more prevalent than in any other month in the calender, is now upon as and in the present gloomy aspect of trade and bubiness, it becomes a serious and important qocstion, ichat will the poor do? When labor is not depressed, and in ordinary times, the poor have keen and freepuent straggles to pass through the wiotcr j&onths vithout feeRng the cold hand of want and distress upon them or their children but in these times, how much more dreadful mast be the approach of winter with no poc.pect under heaven for them save that of misery and woe!

Who now will more in the initiative, to tak« measures to obtain relief for thp poor, and endeavor bv practical aid aud energitic action, to provide some few of the necessary comforts to which by the laws of nature and christivn charity, they are entitled? They cannot and will not steal they dare not beg their noble natures repel equally the one alternative and the other and yet there is nothing save a diriet association with crime, that tends so speedily to reduce the moral standard of the people so much as idleness.
