6off8idfriQg tfie immense saperioritj of the Union over.tiie Express— which all sensible men now concede— it Li rot ab all wondoiful that Hmlaon fthotrid think thifcprctty nearly everybody writes, for t!ve Union. Well, we are sofjy f# ^!fe-|)6or feHIr^, and cannot'help almost shedding the tear of sjrtpkttoff evatytttne 4i&iimiike« an effort to hide his ignorance- There is one thing he may rest certain about, jttnd that is, that rfoboi jrwill ever snpjfose that any boily bat himself wrote his "financial?' article in the Express of yesterday. There is not another man in this community that would write such a one, if there is ojne, besides hirfl, that coUld do so. See vrhaj an ignoramus he is.

Wefsaid, day before yesterday, that ©ur brisincss men here cortkhiot afford to pay us much for Illinois ^tnoney as the business men of St. Louis—because kvo "look to the East more than to the West for all values." Well, is not that true',? ITow^many of our

We arc* glad it is sharp—for it takes some thing of that sort to penetrate as thick jr skaJAild" tlieii lie 506s bn to talk ofj the nearness of Terro jljauto to 'Illinofs, fec. i/dre's what he says im* viu-A U»o i»"i

Now thisrwilV strike every business man as the thar prist reason ever given. That Terre-Hrtufo, situated on the border of Illinois, with railroad fiu-tf-jties to reach nil tho banks in thiM State equal W Bt. Louts of any other city—at a point of transportation, two hundred miles less from the eastern cities than St. Louw, cannot give

If tho idco wero not laughable it would be simply ridiculous.

But why shoald ettV merchants give jnodli For Illinois iu)ney and do [as ranch to keep up Illinois banks, as the St. Louis morchants? St. Louis Bells toriinois more than a thousand dollars to onrone, n"n4 is that much moro interested in htr credit. Bo&ides, the crodit-of 6-t. Lotus merchants must b*lp tQ jp^r It thw, and.lheTe3t,cut ^»0'r tradb b^.-. yond ours, thai enables them to give more than we can for Illinois money.

Bi\t he talks about our loosing Minols trade. Bah !—trade goes whererer itcan find profit.? iKow, it is perfectly well understood that the money of onr OWN banks is not current in Illinois:—why ahonld we then, for the mere sake of selling a few goods. feel ourselves tinder any s|j»§^ cial oration to mate Illinois money fori* better thin onr a 4 not. Here's a specimen of Garber's former locofocoism, and also a fine illustration of the Democracy of Republicanism. Will the Editor of the Express inform us whether he endorses this? Come, Mr Express, tell- us whether you aro in favor of a metallic currency. -J

THR EARTHQUAKE.—An earthquake seems to have been heaving its way nrro*s tl:e country from tho Pacific ^Vce:ift to the Ohio river. Its shock Wri'S felt over a large district of couutry in California on the 2d of September. Bonecia, Downieville, »SaciamcntoCity, San Juan, Nevada, Gra^s Vallry, Placerville, etc., were considerably shaken. At Nevada the thock cauxxl mnch corfstefriatldh.'^ The Court Mouse was'crnckcd from top to bottom, and the people rushed to the streets. At St. Louis yesterday morning the people were awakened by tbe shock which lasted perhaps one and a liajf minutes. Tho oscillation seemed to bo from North to South, and the New Albany Ledger of last evening so that the shock was felt at that piaca yesier(iaymorning.*•

This earthqnake has not crossed the Ohio river, nnd wo hope' it won't The people on' this fside," and from liertf to the capes of tho Atlantic seaboard have been shakon quite enough ly tho monetary panic. We hope the earthquake has concluded not to come across.

Pcw.ro* PAP—A writor in the New York Times startles the pap-loving office hunters with the announcement that, there i& a hatch of snug places connected with the land offices all over tho country, which have hitherto boen unfilled, or rather have been vacant for a number of years, and on the fact having been made known to the President within a few days,'he was somewhat astonished and surprised at the disclosure, stating that he had no knowledge that such appointments were in his gift. We are inclined to the opinion that the President of the United States will not thank the informant for his information, as such a stampede will be made for a chance in at these new mines, that the executive will bo Htorally overwhelmed as with a huge wave, and borne down by the army of besiegers who will .throng the Capital.

IUWI^J'THE CKSTUAL AMERICA.— The New York Tribune, of Saturday, says:

"Some papers have boen giving currency to reports that the Boston Submarine Armor Company had proposed to the underwriters to raise the Central America

43^ This total rsnmbei' of appli^ tioos mjeived for land warrants up to the 20th nit., was 280,46$, and the total nnmber of warrants issued is 214,894, To satisfy the warrants issued it will require 29,710,670 acres. What if a few

railroads 6hall pass into the hands of those who hold their mortgage bonds? —or a few banks shall suspend or break? —or a few merchants close their door.v? —or a few btokere fail All this is but the natural cohsequcnce of a high degree of prosperity, which draws men out beyond their capacity to stand, as the smooth surface of the sea often draws the yonng swimmer beyond his depth. Few men, whatever the robu tness of their constitution, pass through life without disease ami it often happens that what we supposo to be disoase is but an effort of nature to assert her supremacy. So in the active whirl of commerce and trade—if now and then a few men shall fall bv the way, those who are left are only inyigorated by the loss, nnd it makes neither a ship less upon the ocean, nor a car" less npon the railroads, nor a dollar less of gold and silfer tbe-^'orld. These things only pasa into^ot.l»ec, hands and the

he of purification In 1837, our financial crisis was produced by over-banking. The public money had been removed from the United States Bank, and placed in the local and State banks, where it was employed to extend accommodations to tho country, by increase of loans. Everything immediately ran into excess every body had money cvorbody traded and the bubble at last burstcd. The reason was this: there was only $73,000,000 of specie in the whole country and only $3$,000,000 of this in tho vaults of the banks, while they had a circulation of $149,000,000 very n*arly /bKr/0O««,^I£ therefore, every dollar of gold and silver in the country had been used to redeem these bank notes in circulation, there would have boen yet left unredeemed $7G,000,000, the losa.jo| which would have fallen upon the bill holder. Conse-. qncntly, without gold and silver enough iu the conntry to ftn3Wer tho demands ofbusiness, and with an .oxcess of irredeemable bauk paper, ruin and bankruptcy was inevitable. But the oonntry lived through it, and business revived again broken fortunes were redeemed now mon sprang np everywhere, and all the branches of trade soon again became active and. prosperous^

The crisis now is toot produced by prCciiely the same cause as then.—» There is ho such o^er-issnes of the banks as then.' Now they hate $63,000,000 of specie, to ©175,000,000 ol circulation, not quite three to one— while the lowest estimate of specie in the country ie #200,000,000. This would' redeem every note in circulation and leave an cxcess of $36,000,(00. Why, then, should any body be alarmed To Say nothing of the immense crop of cotton, sugar, wheat, pork, corn, cattle, and everything that a superabundant ^t^oixi,^ bring

B|t iitatea^l this,\ their money in purchasing Bail road stock, and all other kinds of stock, out of which they thought money could be made. They have left their bank conntcrs nnd taken their seats among the bears and bulls of W*11 Street, and have become stock gamblers. of the worst tort^„„JBank Directors, with their eyes on the stook market, have been unable to detect the dishonesty of bank Cashiers, until defalcations and embezzlements arq counted by thousands and tons of thousand The.result of the whole is, that when the stock-bubble has bursted, the banks are without the means to relieve the merchants and business men —bills for importation, due in Europe, are maturing when no bank accommodations oan be obtained to meet them—and failures are inevitable. But compared with the crisis of 1837, they arc confined to a few only. These will pasl out of the way, arid others wil take their places. The immense crops of tho country aro coming into market, and will demonstrate to us that, at last, the chief reliance of our prosperity is upon the laboring classes and not upon tho
