This institution has failed. It hhd a deposite account of soino $70,000, or $80,000, but how far they will be paid is not yet known. There was a good deal of excitement at Belleville when the failure was first announced, and it continued throughout Tuesday. The Bank was based on State Stocks, and the note holders will be secure whatever else may happen, if the Auditor will only perform his duty carefully and without, too much precipitation.

FROM THE PLAINS.—Capt. Benj. Russell arrived at Lexington, Mo., on Tuesday last, after an absence of some three months, during which time he visited Salt Lake City, and intermediate points. He says that the Cheyenne Indian depredations are unabated and are daily growing of a more daring and aggravated character. When he left Salt Lake, the Mormons had fortified Fort Bridger, and say they will defend that fort against the passage of United States troops; and they will whip out ail the U. S. troops that can be sent against them.
On the way in, Mr. Russell was chased by the Cheyennes, on several occasins [sic]. Their shots came so near his destruction as to pierce his saddlebags, coat, and hat, yet he arrived unhurt.
He says that, two weeks ago, three men in the employ of Russell & Waddell, were killed by the Cheyennes. They also stole some fifty head of stock, and some two hundred U. S. guns, from the trains of those gentlemen. The Indians, he adds, were prowling around Fort Laramie, and declare their inteution of taking that post. =====
