tmr W« We kail few more sagackHl* politicians in this country than tlia late Oot. Marcj. In a conversation about the late Presidential conM*t, had not long beforehi* death, he ««id "OnceI thought the election lost, us it tout and if Jodg# McLean bud been the canilidate, it would ha?e been lost irreparably."

Jjiit tho«e who voted for Fremont Clunk of thia. Gov. Marcy tells them that they elected Buchanan. So long the American party with its con nervatiara remained compact the Democracy -were beaten—-h\xt aa the abolitionist* did'nt intend to have conservatism triumph, they got up an opposition movement to defeat Fillmore, even at the risk of giving the election to the Democrat*. Therefore they managed the Pittsburg and Philadelphia conventions just as they pleased, and threw Americanism and conservatism overboaicL They would'nt touch either Fillmore or McLean because they wcro both conservative—because Fillmore had approved the Fugitive Slave law and McLean had decided it to be constitutional! They linn led up Fremont because he was an adventurer and had no politics cxccpt that ho had boon a Democrat. Giddings fixed up the plaifyrni so as to take in the abolitionists, and men who had been Americans and Fillmore men—who had been Whigs and Olay men—who had professed conservatism all their lives, ranged themselves in the ranks of the mixed and motley crowd of "freedom shriekem," aid thereby defeated Fillmore andelccted Buchanan! Let them now ponder upon these things. If Democracy is now ruining the country, as they say, they gave it povv?r to do so-

So it seem*. that less than 100 years ago, men and women were brought from Ireland, and sold as slaves, in the State of Connecticut, And not 100 years before that tiraflt, Indians wero sent from Connecticut, llhode Island, &c., to the W«bt Indies, aod sold into slavery. Gorious historical facta,4 thoso.--JVtfw Haven Register,

Should not Now England troat the South a little more neighborly on the subjeot of slavery, when the agency it* pilgrim sottlors had in bringing slaves to this conntry is recollected? The slave ratio was carried on almost entirely by northern people, and it seems that "Irish Servants"—white of course, were sold in Connecticut. And thus slavery got hero—Now England getting the pay and leaving the "curse" lor tho north. Now, tho«e who reaped the profit are laboring to make tho curse still greater to the South by turning loose amongst them several millions of negroes who will have to be mainly supported by a pauper tax. This is neither kind nor fair—and is besides, an open and direct attempt to violate the tetter and spirit of thq national compact bcLween the States.

gJ'The Rev. Mr. Baillargooe, Cure ft St. Nicholas, before a single'soul perished, gave absolution to all the unfortunate passengers. He mna in his own parish on the opgonle Shore of. fthe St. Lawrence, observed the. 4a»gerin which the lives of those on board werefin and pronounced the absolution."

The foregoing is taken from an account given by a Roman Catholic Journal, published in Canada, of the late burning of ihe Steamer Montreal. The unlimited influence and absolute control of the priesthood of this church over the millions of ignftfant and superstions people who compose it, is not to be wondered at, when they have got them to believe in this wholesale way of saving souls. It repudiates all individual agency entirely, and gives to the priest the keys of heaven with which he can unlock its gates, even without the knowledge or consent of the party to be saved!— Some Popes have claimed that they hold the plate of the true Oodand does not the "true God" absolve»from sin"?

It will be remembered4hat Dr.

A. Hamlin had a nice Spanish suit which was gotten up by Wm. J. Mack, of our city, and simply designed to attract attention while on the streets in pursuit of his legitimate Easiness —curing -corns. He wore it for a day or two while here, and it was much admired for its beauty. But the richest joke of the season is, after Dr. H. arrived in Paris,.Illinois, he put on-this suit and promenaded the streets, but was soon nabbed by -an officer and carried before the grand jury (court being in session) to give an account of his mysterious appearance. The suckers were taken in that time— sold, completely. The Dr. was finally set at liberty, no witchery being proven against him,

Pitt, afterwards Lord Rivers, declared that he could tame the most furious animal by looking at it steadily. Lord Spencer said, "Well there is a mastiff in the court yard here which is the terror of tho neighborhood, will you try on him?" Pitt agreed to do so, and the company descended to the court yard. A servant held the mastiff by a chain. Pitt knelt down a short distance from tho animal, they all shuddered. At a given signal, the mastiff was lot loose, and rushed furiously towards Pitt, then suddenly checked his pace, seemed confounded, and leaping over Pitt's head, ran away, and was not seen for many hours after. During one of my visits to Italj, while I was walking a little before my carriage on the road not far from Vienna, I perceived two huge dogs bounding towards me. I recollected what Pitt had done, and trembling from head to foot, 1 yet had resolution enongh to stand quite still and eye them with a fixed look. They gradually relaxed their speed from a gallop to a trot, came op to me, stopped for a moment and went back again.

A Thrilling Incident.

Returning from a visit to New Orleans, we were fortunate enough to secure passage oa a line steamer with but few passengers. Among the ladies,•one especially interested us. She was the widow of a wealthy planter, and was returning with only one child to-her father's house. Her devotion to the child was very touching, and the eyes of her old black nurse would fill with tears as she besought her mistress "not so love that boy too much, or the Lord would take hitn from her.*"

We passed through the canal at Louisville, and stopped for a few minutes at her wharf, the narse wishing to see the city walked o&t oo the guard at the baok of the boat, where by a sudden effort the child sprang from her arms into the terrible current -that swept towards the •falls, and disappeared immediately. The confusion which ensued attracted the attention of a gentlemen who was sitting in the front part of the boat, quietly reading. Rising bsstily, he askoa for some article the child bad worn. The nurse handed him a tiny apron she had torn olf in her effort to retain the 'babe in her arms. Turning to a splendid Newfoundland dog, thnc was eagerly watching his countenance, he pointed first to tbe apron, and then to the spot, where the child had gone under. In an instant the noble dog leaped into the rushing water, and he also soon disappeared. By this time the excitement was intense, and some persons on shore, supposing that the dog was lost as well as the child, procured a boat and started in search of the body. Just at this moment the dog was seen far away with something in his mouth. Bravely he struggled with the waves but it was evident that his strength was fast failing and more than one breast gave a sigh of relief as the boat reached him, and it was announced that he had the child, and it was still alive. They were brought on shore— the dog and the child.

Giving a single glance to satisfy herself that the child was really living tho young mother rushed forward and sinking beside the dog, threw her arms around his neck and burst into tears. Not many could view tho sight unmoved, and as she caressed and kissed his shaggy head, she looked up to his owner and said: "Oh, sir, I must have this dog! I am rich take all I have—eveiy thing —but give me my child's preservor/'

The gentleman smiled, and patting his dog's head, said:

('I

am glad, madam, he has been of service to you, but nothing in the world could induce me to part with him."

Tho dog looked as though ho perfectly understood what they were talking about, and giving his sides a shake laid himself down at his master's feet with an expression in his large eyes that said plainer than words—"No, nothing shall part us."

WHERE

IS HK?—On the 26'h of De

cember, 1855, a lad, then aged 15 years, named Richard Thbmpson, the son of Mrs. Catherine Thompson, now residing at 47 Price Place, West Division, Chicago, left his home for unaccountable reasons. The boy was afterwards heard of leading a rover's life about the streets of kew York. Subsequently failing to earn a sufficient stipend in this way, he obtained admission to the Juvenille Asylum. From thenco he was taken, in March, 1856, by a Mr. William Lsmmons, of Teire-Hauto, Ind., among other boys, to have homes provided for them in the West, since which time nothing has been heard from the youth, except occasional Hying rumors that he is in Indiana. Mr. Lemmons has been frequently written to, bdtno reply has been had from him. This is certainly wrong, if wilfully neglected by Mr Lemmons if he wishes to earn tho name of Philanthropist, Richard has a dark, brunette skin, haftel eyes, and very dark hair has a low forehead, down look, and talks slowly. He was raised ih Washington, D. 0.

Will the Indiana papers please Circulate this matter, as it may tend to restore a boy to his fond parent and comfortable home, who may be otherwise lost.—National Ihm., Chicago.
