that's one reason why I have almost concluded not to go. Another reason is because I despise toltittde, and Byron gives it as his decided opinion, somewhere in "Childe Harrold," that there isno place where a feeling of solitude so oppresses one, as in a gay and giddy throng of strange and unknown faces, with not a pleasant smile or kindly look to tell us that we are not all alone. Now, there are two good reasons, the one a decided one, and the other a poetical one. But then, it seems to me they can't well be reconciled with each other, and that, in fact, it will be necessary for ate to drop one, in order to avail myself of the other. But I don't want to rely upon a •ingle reason, so I guess I'll go after all.

The County fair will be followed by the fifteenth exhibition of the Ohio Mechanics Institute. For this purpose a large and splendid letall has been built in the city lot, on Vine street, and is already being filled with articles for exhibition. You have doubtless seen a description of this hall in the Cincinnati papers, so I'll not trouble you with that The exhibition commences on Tbursdaj next, and is nrpccted to be by fer the finest one they have ever given.

The disappointment caused by the failure of the Louisville National Fair has bad a tendency rather to raise public expectation of the success of the Ohio State Fair, than otherwise, but it Is (aid that it will not fall below the most that can be expected of it. It Is supposed that there ill be one of the largest crowds in attendance ever assembled here, and consequently I can avail myself of both of my reasons for not remaining. The Fair will .commence on the fifteontb and continue during the week.

I'm nOt much of a sporting character, but I had a hunt the other night—a good hour's hunt—after muaquitoes. A bar ftill -a room fhll—a house ftill! Just think of it! Imagine the fiendish and diabolical harmony produced by the thousands of voices (are they voicesT) graduated In sounds from the shrill alarm of the trumpet to tho deep tones of the bassoon I succeeded,' however, at length, after closing my window and shutting the transom, in murdering all that were in my room, but not until I was tolly convinced that a slight change in an bid song would make a very appropriate rending, as follows: ,• "Oh,they4raw4Wlf U/:

In the evening I attended the Vine Street Congregatlona! chuKh. and heard the Rev. Mr. jBoynton preach a very interesting sermon upon the subject of "The body of the Resurrection." in which be argued with much fcrce that the body after the teattrrettton will b« a' material and not a spiritual one and advanced also that other doctrine which every pwaon'a hope tells him mast be tr«e, that friends and relaUres in this world will recognise and know each other in the next Ho weotatUI farther, however, and Intimated an opinion that the new heavens and the new earth, spoken of in tho scripture as that which shall follow the icmrtettiott. mtgjhtbe the same globe which we now occupy. SILVER ORS DISCOVERED IN CASS COONTY, TEXAS.—The Jefferson Gazette learns from the Comity Surveyor that specimens of Silver ore have been discovered in Oass county about eighteen miles above Jefferson, near the road thence tawards Dangerfield. The Gazette says.

A gentleman by the name of Jeffries, who came to this county upon some business with Mr. Nash in regard to his iron mine, is the one who ha8 been making the discovery. Ths silver was first discovered in a well, which was being dug upon the plantation of theBev. Mr. Ross since then other discoveries have been made.— We are told that if other spots turn out as well as those which have been tried, the ground will be worth $200, 000 per acre. Cass county is already celebrated for its magnificent iron deposits, and silver is not an .unusual acccftnpanimcnt of iron.

THE CAPITAL EXTEKSIOK.—It has been reported that the new House of Representatives and the Senate Chamber will be ready for occupancy by the next session of Congress: The Union, however, states that it is not intended to occupy them during the coming session, nor until that of 1858 and 1859, whrn it is expected that the extensions will be completely finished throughout, and the old halls appropriated to othor purposes, such as the sessions of the Uuitcd States Supreme Courts _.

A Million More of Ohio Money Lost! The Cleveland Plaindealer of Tuesday, 3d, furnishes the following in regard to the State finances:

Intelligence direct and reliable from Collumbus, assures us that over a millitn of the money obtained on a loan of last winter, authorised by the Legislature to take tip State bonds, due January last, and deposited with the Ohio Life and Trnst, New York, for that purpose has gone the way of all monies and securities left with that soulless and sunken concern. There were $2,500,000 of (he State bonds duo January 1, 1857. To redeem these bonds a law was passed authorizing the Fund Commissioner to borrow the amount, which they did by selling a now issue of State Stocks. The fusion officials soon decided this question by selecting the New York Agency of the Ohio Life and Trust Co., without taking one dollar of security for the $2,500,000 thus deposited, althongh the Democrats in the Legislature urged them to do so. As near as can be ascertained, about ftl,200,000 only had been presented for redemption up to the time of the failure of said Trust Co. The balance is non est inveniut.

How far the visit of Auditor Wright to New York, on tht announcement of the failure of the Eastern Agency of Trust Co. was connected with this, we do not know, and how much truth has been suppressed in view of the coming fall election, we are not pre])arcd to say. The affair looks suispecious, however, and is of sufficient importance to require at the present time, for the satisfaction of the people, a statement of the condition of the State finances.— Cincinnati Times. •C, I »t«' v.

The Fort Snelling Swindle. The Utica Herald has been looking up the Congressional Tecord of he clause in the last Military Appropriation bill under which the country has been done out of nearly a million dollars in the sale of the Fort Snelling Reservation. The result is most instructive. The clause was first reported to the Senate on the 2il of March last—the day before Congress adjourned—by Mr. Weller, of California, from the Military Committee. It was rushed through both Houses without discussion, consideration, or a clear understanding of its character. Here is a specimen of the process: "Mr. Bright said—I should enquire if there is any provisions fur public sale.

Mr. Weller said—those sold under the act of 1819 were sold at auction, but it has been decided that the act was retrospective, and did not apply to any military sites established after the passage of the law. Since that time, of course, many military posts have become wholly useless lo the Government, and this amendment is to 8p11 them. "Mr. Bright-—At public or at private sale 1

BCWALO.—The

citizens of Buffalo, New York, have been indulging in a money panic. On Monday and Tuesday last quite a run was made on the banks. About noon of the latter day, the "runners" got tired, and the calls for specie became less frequent The bankers then made the announcement that their closing time was three o'clock, but to oblige the public they would keep open until five The "run" was a failure.

.?.'MR- WELLEN^~AT PCBLIC SALE. "Upon this statement the Senate agreed to the amendment. The law of 1819 contains no provision for public sale yet the precedent has been for snch sale almost if not uniformly. Mr. Weller's statement was that the amendment provided to sell at public sale and this was false. Upon his statement, cleverly drawn out by Senator Bright, the clause was inserted. Having been so passed, there was more than usual force to be given to the precedent of selling saeh sitos by auction but this finst sale, in view when the clause was enacted, violates what Mr. Weller declared the law would be, and what the precedent really has been. For what did Mr. Weller mis-state the purport of the amendment 1 -J

WAK ot 18H.—The

manner in which a pig caused the war of 1812, was the following:—-Two cittsens of Providence, R. I., both of the Federal school of politics, chanced to quarrel. They were neighbors, and one of them owned a pig which had and inveterate propensity to perambulate in the garden of the other. The owner of the garden complained that his neighbor's pig-sty was insufficient to restrain the pig, and the neighbor insisted that & garden fences were not in good repair. One morning, aa the pig was taking his usual ramble, he was surprised in the very act of rootin# up some valuable bulboas roots wis was the "last feather," and the owner of the garden instantly put the pig to death with a pit«hfork.
