It is said tint we have seized upon tbc Island of Form nsa in the Pacific Ocean, as indemnity for the damage done us by the Chinese in the Into military operations at Canton. This is'.vtd is called Tai-ouan, by the Chinese—the name of Formnta—which means fair—having boon given to it by the Spaniards, to signify thct fertility and beauty of the soil. It is situated about one hundred miles S^Hith-east from the coast of China—extends from about 22° to Stft'Sj® north latitude, and is considered by the Chinese one of their best provinces. The "western prsrt only5 is in the possess-ioto of the

Chinese, while the eastern, or mountainous part, i« occupied by tribes "almost savage, who live by hunting, sleep on leaves, have scarcely any clothes or furniture, and t.ittao their skin like the rudest of the Sou'.h Sen islanders." It was first settled by the Portuguese, and afterwards by the Hollanders, who were expelled, in 1661, by tho Chinese. Its principal commerce has been in Cinnamon' ginger, cattle, hides, stags and buff-do horns, which are sold to the Chinese merchants. At the time of their expulsion the Dutch *verc engaged in working a gold mine, which they rep resented as verv rich and prsductive. The island is subject to frequent earthquakes, and
