i/to Sabbath. A* many of ita patrons here, are reader# aba of the Cmoa, we should omit the performance of a colcmn doty, if we suffered th* poboaotu i»flunice of these a'tacks 11 be disseminated in oar cc-nmunity, without some efiurt, on our ptrt, to counteract ft.~ To nytluft it is a serious thins to assail the atnctUj otthe'SafWifith'fliy .and by thus assailing it, to persuade wcrtflr that on institution whose moral and refinlnglnfluence the Christworld has felt a»ul recognized since Christ was upon earth is no longer worthy of preserst ion, is but to *ay what every man, who has Iwcn raised and educated under C.iri stain influence* will readily admit. Ye*, at the same time, if, in this day, we have more light upon tliis subject than the Christianity of eighteen hundred years has furnished, and sucili a proponflon can be *ulRcierftly demonstrated, it ty l»c said, witli softtcwlnt of plausibility, tint we might not to shut one eyes lolt. At the same time we frankly concede, that there arc some things about which, if we are in error, wc find pleasure in the delusion. And this i* one of them—for, if it should ever turn out that there is no such tiling a«i the Chrktain 8»l*b&th day, nnd that Christ has omitted so important an clement in the cconomy of his church, wc shouM still le inclined to ding to it n* an iufttittiiion worthy of the Divine Mind—hallowed by a thousand Associations which wc would not omit to cherish for the world. Because we cannot penetrate the v-11 which coneeales from us the world beyond thb», shall wc therefore conclude that there is none Faith is tho "evidence of things not seen," and the human mind without it, becomes ft« dreary and desalatc ana barren heath.
The several articles published in the Commercial must be taken together, to perceive their drift and object fully. Ir the daily of the 18th, the Nut-ptancc of wh«tt had been previously shown, as the Editor himself understood it, is stated to be, "that the SABBATH of the Old Testament was peculiarly a Jewish institution, limited by the late oj its establishment to the children of Itratl, and in respect to time beginning with Motet nnd ending with Christ!! This is sufficiently plain for every body to understand. It i.4 a clear and distinct statement of several propositions first, that the Jewish Sabbath was instituted for tho Jews alone— second, that it bcyun with Moses, and third, that it ended with Christ. If al"! this be true, the inevitable coiwqurnce is easily stated—which is, that (he Jewish Sabbath no longer exists. Ccrtninly this is so, if it begun with Moses and ended with Christ—for there must have been no Jewish Subbath befofe the law was delivered to Moses, nor after Christ. Now, if we stop just here, and eoncedc to the Cmmerctal both this* style of reasoning «nd what it assert', dogmatically—-that Christ established no ?hbbatb,—it drives us at once to its own conclusion, that there is now no Sabbath at all—-(or that Is the effect of its argument, let its assertions be what they may.— Ihtt it should not bo permitted to escape thus cswily, for upon a subject so Important as this to thopenee and welfare ofnoclety, such errors its it isnowdbwminMlnsr should be grappled at once. It needs but little calm reasoning to vspose them—nnd no higher rules of argument than those furnished by common sense. And the truth is, that, with all the ability which is conceded to the Commercial it hns fallen into the same difficu'ty 'hit a carefhl inspection will exhibit In all the modes of reasoning that hnvc heretofore distinguished attacks upon the ChrUtain Subbath—that of contradicting Itself. In iU case, this contradiction goes farther than usual, inasmuch at It furnishes a complete refutation of the theory St has expended so much labor in trying to establish. And there is no difficulty t* showing this.
The Gmmerfiat of the ll?th states, as wc hare already shown, that I ho JetcL*h Sabbath had its "beginning wi'k Moms"—that is, that befort Miwes, the Jews had »a Sabbath. Tho necessity for this position consisted In the fact, that unless it could be established, there would be no force or plausibility in it* other principle position, that Christ established no Sabbath at all. These were evidently the only two Ideas in the mind of the editor, when be wrote his first article, and its he wrote like a man determined to drive every body, whether or no» to his own eonetu»tan»,he did not then parcel re the difficulty into which he was plunging. But tub* .vguent reflection must have satisfied him of it. by enabling him to see—what no man can fail to *«e—tin? if there was no Sabbath befare Moses, mid the coming of Christ disannulled that which Hod hid established for «At Jews akin, and if Christ established none for to Church, therefore, we were now cMtymtk out any Sabbath*/ all of amy twl! An«l this, we apprehend, proved rather more than the

of course,
including a Sabbath,) it goes eb to say that
KrreVu o*Cax!C rrXTCns or HtJfiA.xlTT, a Mate of society." This comes to the point
The statement then, in the Commercial of fiie 18th July, that the Jewish Sabbath begun with Moses—is not true,
as is now stated in the
Commercial of the 31st. Indeed, according to the same authority, no body would have made rtich a statement, exccpt "from the unni of thought upon the snbjecU" So i^r from its being true, the
Institution of aSsb^a'dt tft
Sinai part of the "moral law" was "no new enactment," because it had existed always, as one of the organic statsiss of humanity," which are, of necessity, as old as society itself. Now then, this brings us right up to the question—which cannot be dodged—that if the institution of the Sabbath day was a part of these "o'ganic statutes of humanity'''' which have existed throughout all time, was it diiannulled by the coming of Christ? The Commercial says it was, because it had its "ending with Christ"—which, if true, wes,of course, the last of it. But it must sei, upon reflection, that thisagainproves too much, for it involves the accusation against Christ of having abrogated one of the "organic statutes of humanity," which was nccessary to society.— It -certainly "wHI net say thut Christ did this and therefore, this last position must also be abandoned. And when that is done, we arc out of-the difficulty so far, that we have & Sabbath, which as it was created by one of the "organic statutes of humanity" must have existed throughout all past time, and must continue to exist throughout all coming time. And then we who call ourselves Christie us, lure only ascertain, token our Sabbath comes.
And here again we must reject the line of argument by which the Commercial confuses the question for, as wc have shown, it inevitably leads us to the point that there is now no Sabbath at nil, either Jewish or Christian! But we must not forget to avail ourselves of its concession, that a Sabbath,
as apart of the
"moral law," must have existed before Moses received the tables at Sinai. And this is a fact which every reader ef the Feirtatcuch knows full well, and of which the Commercial might hare informed itself, by a slight examination of the Bible, at the time it ventured to say that the Jewish Sabbath bad its "begining tcith Moses." The proof of it, indeed, is fonnd in the fourth Commandment itself. Its language is—" remember the Sabbath day, to koep it holy*' Ac. Hits signifies that something that already existed, must Ite kept in mind and the word "remember" would scarcely have been used, if the command liad its •'beginning with Moses." And thus, dispelling the mist in which the ingenuity of the Commercial has enveloped the question, wc get rid of the principal difficulty, by settling the fact that there always was a Snbbath day, in commemoration of God's rest from Ms labor, commencing with Adam And extending to the coming of Christ. This being established, we shall proceed to show, to-morrow, that, in tho very necessity of things arc more particularly, in that of man's nature, God designed Uie "organic statute" by which a Sabbath wag created, as irrepcalable, so long as man's nature remained unchanged and that as this necessity continues up to the present time, there must yet bo a Sabbath day moreover, attempt to BIIOW that Sunday, or theirs/ day of the week is, by /KtHnrapp 'Wit racnt, the tine Christian Sabbath.
NEGRO TnotrnrjSB AT CAIRO.—On Sunday last a party of fifty or sixty persons came over from Missouri to Cairo, in search of fifteen or twenty runaway slaves, who had recently escaped from Southeastern Missouri.
