TERRE-HAUTE. TUESDAY MORNING, JULY 28, '57.

Indiana Republican Editorial Convention.

The semi-annual meeting of this bxly met lit Indianapolis on tbe I 6th and bat few were in attendance, yet it *u quite si well ettendtd ws bad anticipated fro® the fact, that in our judgment there wai no present necessity fur the call* and while it was probable it could do no good, it might place itself in a position from indiscreet resolves kc- so as to make it the more difficult in future to shape a coarse which the necessities of thetiunsmight reauirf, and thus do a positive injustice without intending It. We give the resolutions adopted which wetBcline to think-reflect no sxeat credit on the character of the Editonal fraternity of Indian*, especially when considered in reference to political intelhgonce.—

Fort Wayne Timet. So we thought, after reading the resolves 'of this august body of modern Casars and Brutuacs. The truth is, Mr. 7Wi, there was not a politician in tb&t convention, and it is •from such movements gotten upbv ttuh men, that have originated the prcseui political anarchy in America. These men sought for nothing but newtpaper notoriety—they cared trot little ferthe party they were attempting to perpetuate, or else theyfcnew nothing at all about what is or should bcHmdoracd by the party. One or the other is evidently true, which is readily inferred from the tenor of the 'resolutions endorsed by them. We have but little doubt as to who was the author of those resolutions—-we have read so much of similar stuff that it

that impedes their progress or disputes their ruinous policy. Our constitution was drawn np by Anglo Saxons—by American citizens, who looked to the welfare of their race and the perpetuation of the Institutions necessary for a Notion's happiness and prosperity. It givestts an optional privilege to bestow favors upon foreign «utweets—In this we include "the rest of mankind," other titan the legitimate American Angk Saxon race—and prudence and experience must dictate what those favors shall be. ItlsnotunioerMl, and coascquently cannot be construed so as to embrace all government* any more than it can all rarr* of the human family. It is the constitution of one people—of one government, and any attempt to construe it otherwise shows a corrupt design, not dreant ed ef by the noble and ^onerous founders.

Nearly every county in the Slate are making their arrangements for a county Ihir, while Vigo remains silent. Why Is this— have we lost all our fanning interests—do our people take no pride in rivalry? Many of our farmer* have asked us why there have not been soro? movements made to get up a County Fair, but a* we do not know whose duty it is to make the preliminary arrangements, we are unable to charge any one with neglect of duty. It is certainly time that the list of premium was circulated in order to give all who are Interested an opportunity of preparing fee the occasion.

We are certainly behind the age tin this respect, and utill there is no good reasouwhy we should be so wanting in duty and energy In such isnpor tant matters. man named John Alloa, who has been gate keeper on the pike between Florence aBd Union, came to Covington and purchased a pistol at J. «k &. Laird's, for which he offered in payment a $20 bill on the State Bank of Indiana. The shop boy having doubts about the genuineness of the bill, started for the Northern Bank.-— Allen endeavored to stop him* This excited the snspecion of ssme bystanders, who told the boy to go on to the Bank, they in the meantime watching Allen. 0n presenting to the bank, the note (having on it a private mark) was immediately recognized by Mr Ernst as belonging to the lot of money lost by Ju8ge Yonell. Allen was thereupon taken into custody. After somo hesitation he admitted he had all the money except about 850, and promised to give it up, if the proper persons would go with him to Boone county. He was placed in a buggy and taken to his home in Boone. He pointed to a tree in which 81,850 were concealed, and had on his person about 8100. After giving up the money he was brought to Covington and committed to jail. On Friday he was sent to Boone county for trial.—

THE CALUOPE.—This

musical instrument has been purchased by Capt. Ohouteau, with the right for the lower Mississippi, for six months. We saw it yesterday for the first time, and must say it is the most ingenious invention we have seen for along time. Capt. Chouteau has put it on his boat, the Amazon, and intends having keys attached to it, so that it can be played the same as a Piano Forte. During his last trip down to New Orleans, a great deal of amusement was afforded all on board, at the entertainment of the people on shorr, when the Calliope would play. At Hiokman, the preacher stopped his sermon—church being in at the time—and he, with his congregation, rushed ont en masse to see what was the matter. At Memphis, ordinance

THU.VDKU WITHOUT CLOUDS.—We have noticed soveral instances of this unusual phenomena in our exchanges this season. At Springfield, Mass., on the llth, a startling clap was board at a time when the sky was clear and there was no appearance of rain. A houso was struck by lightning but no person injured. A ball of fire was see® to burst just over an dm. The forked flame played among the branches and girdled the tree in a cork screw fashion. The same shock threw two men off their feet, without serious injury to their persons.

Preserved Fruit.

Now is the time to lay in a supply of fruit to keep in a fresh, natural state. Almost all "kinds can be preserved so as to retain their natural flavor. The best thing to preserve them in, we think, are

earthen jars, man-

ufactured*by Knowles &c Harvey,East Liverpool, Columbiana 'ceranty, Ohio. There is no lead or other poisonous matter in the glazing, but it is, we are assured, pure flint glass. No acid can affect it, except that which cute glass itself. They are made in pint, quart two quart, and gallon jars, with a lid that fits in close and a small hole in the center of the lid. A ciy? of sealiog wax composed of two parts rosin, snd one of beestvaq,,or two parts rosin, one part shellac gum, and a spoonful of linseed oil to two pounds of rosin. This should be kept "hot. A syrup should be wade of \vater and granulated sugar, sweet as each may like, and brought to a boiling heai. The fruit should then be placed in the syrup, and istand just long enough to heat through, but not cook, and then while hot in thenars the lid put in after the edge of it is coated with the sealing wax and when about as warm as the hand can bear it, the hole in he top of the lid should bo filled with cotton, and then that hermetically sealed with the wax. If care is taken to seal it so that no air can enter, the fruit will retain its natural freshness

GREAT COPNTRY FOR THE LADIES. —The time for n.arriage in Sparta was fixed by statute —that of the men at about thirty or thirty five years that of the women at about twenty or^ a little younger. All men who continued unmarried afterthe appointed time \ve -e liable to a prosecution and all old bachelors were prohibited from being present at the public exercise of the •Spartan maidens, and wera denied the usual respect and honors paid to the aged. 'Why should I give you a place,' cried a young mao to an unmarried general, 'when yon have no child to give place to me when I am old? No marriage portions were given with any of tho maidens,so that neither properrty nor riches should tsmpt liira, to marry contrary to his inclinations. The parents of three children enjoyed considerable immunities, and those with four children paid no taxes whatever—a regulation which all married men with large families readily admit to be most wise and equitable. It was customary for the bridesmaid to cut oft* ail the brides hair on the wedding-day,

23T Some of the Democratic editors want to know why President Fillmore, if he was opposed to alien suffrage in the Territories, did not put his veto npon the bill organizing Washington Territory out of apart of Oregon. Well, in the first place, Whig Presidents and the Whig party never much liked the exercise of tho veto, and, in the second place. Mr. Fillmore, by putting his veto upon the Washington bill and thus defeating the organization of the new Territory, would have effected nothing at all against alien suffrage,^ for then what is now Washington would have remained apart of Oregon, and in Oregon tho principle of alien suffrage was already established.—Louisville Journal.

Utah.

It is said to be weil understood at Washington that trouble in Utah is to be anticipated from causes entirely distinct from the pecnliar institutions of the Mormons. One of these difficulties, and perhaps the principal one, as stated by the New York Commercial, is that Brigham Young claims title to all the lands in the territory, and has never recognized the United States snrveys. Neither "have any of the Mormons purchased lands in accordance with the laws of the United States, and of course all parts of the territory are at this day still open to pre-emption. Not an individual in Utah holds a valid title to the land he occupies and any one now purchasing lands there according to the laws of the United States would have aright to call upon the federal courts to enforce his right and put him in possession of his purchase.

This may either simplify er complicate the course to be pursued toward the Mormons by the Fe.ieral Government, according to circumstances. It constitutes the basis of a direct issue, should it be deemed advisable to raise one, without touching the question ef religious belief or practice (always one of great delicacy) and as such would carry with it an undivided popular sentiment. No injustice would be done to the Mormons were the Federal Government to force such an issue upon them. They are on the spot, and can correct their error by immediate purchase, and thus secure and perpetuate the benefit of improvements of the land which they have so -long -enjoyed without purchase. If they, Brigham Young included, were persuaded, or by self interest induced to take this step, the moral effect would be highly salutary. It wonld be a recognition of tho authority of the United States Government, to which hitherto thefy have been strangers and seeing that their chief leader wns constrained, and being themselves also led,-to acknowledge and obey the laws of the Union, they might in time also be induced to regard with some deference the sentiments of its people and the character of its institutions.
