No amount of building or improvement in any city can be complete, while tbe streets remain in the condition they sir.*: in at present, in ninety-eight out oj one hundred cities and small Uiwns. Scarcely a day passes during which is not heard on every side exclamations of discontent at the mud or dust that accumulates in the streets. Tbe merchants justly complain that the dust of summer, wafted in from the streets, finds lodgement in every nook and cranny of their stores, thereby doing serious damage to delicate and costly fabrics, and preventing them from displaying tbeir goods advantageously, thereby driving local trade and money to other more enterprising places. The mud is a cause of complaint in the winter, and the blinding, suffocating dust, alike injurious and offensive in the summer, and both the mud and dust cause loss to the local merchants at all seasons..
It is already conceded that brick, when properly made out of good material, and laid by a method adopted by competent engineers and men of practical experience, surpasses anything in the paving line for cheapness, durability and cleanliness.

-. The regular monthly meeting of the switchmen's lunion was held at their hall last night. Aside from the general routine of business nothing else was transacted. It is stated however the only plausible excuse that can be advanced, for the early adjournment of the meeting was the fact that Messrs. Sand ison & Burnes presented the boys with a box of fine Havana filjers under the innumerable circling rings which silently floated about the edifice on the sultry air, the over-joyed boys and more especially the smokers, passed resolutions heartily thanking Messrs. Sandison & Burns for the present.
