THB late duke of Bedford made the twelfth peer to commit suicide during this century.

Br the late duke of Bedford's will not only his body was cremated, but several boxes of personal clothing,* besides boots, slippers and several walking sticks and umbrellas.

THE body of the extremely rich and eccentric duke of Bedford, whose re-

crematory built especially for this one cremation. THE late duke of Bedford sat in tbe bouse-of commons for twenty-five years and in the house of lords for eighteen years, in all a parliamentary career of forty- three years, without opening his lips. His Estate covered 118 acres *n London, with about three thousand residences or shops.

Tin? late duko of Bedford was very much of a hermit. He rarely went abroad, and not one in a thousand of his tenants had ever seen him. His income exceeded £1,000 a day, and every morning he awoke to find himself richer than he was the day before.

AI,THOT OH the late duke of Bedford was cremated, when the bearers raised

his coffin with a (statement of the cremation, in case, if the coffin were opened centuries hence, there should arise 4ome suspicion concerning his death.

RAN THEM OUT OF TOWN.

AlessarkaUe Seene at a Funeral in London Yesterday. LONDON, April 10.—A remarkable scene was witnessed yesterday at Pendlebury, during the funeral of Mis. Field iug Swinton, whose death was attended by circumstances giving rise to suspidon against her husband. While the burial rites were in progress a crowd of fifty women in attendance as mourners attacked a woman known to have been criminally int'male with Mr. Swinton and who had defied public opinion by making her appearance at the funeral. They drove her away and pursued her down the street of the village, pelting her with stones and mud gathered from tbe highway. A large number of mill hands, attracted by the clamor, left their work and joined in the chase. In a moment, however, some of the men raised a cry tbat they might better be aCter the woman's partner in iniquity who w*s the more guilty of the two. Acting on the suggestion, tbe male portion of the mob turned their attack upon tho husband, who was among the number of mourners who had followed the rioters. He fled amid a shower of missies and he, as well as his paramour, was driven out of town. The wrath of the villagers being appeased, order was restored and tbe interrupted funeral rites were decorously completed.

be pretty well known before there are any advertisements about what propositions will be submittad to the government, but the advertisement is neceesarv to the legal formality and will give an opportunity for any one to submit bids, whether they have bad previous consultation with the postoffice officials or not. Tbe number of bids to carry the mails to South America promises to bo considerable. If $700,000, more or leas, to to be massed upon the southern service, it will make the new lines profitable with only a moderate amount of private business. The bids for trans-Atlan-tic service promises to be few. The International Line may submit a proposition, but tbe bulk ,of the mail will be nrobablv carried, for several year at least, on European vessels.

PROCTOR WILL WAIT.

He May be Appointed to the Senate by Governor Punts. WASUIKRION, April 10.—It is learned on good authority that Secretary Proctor has no intention of resigning his office immediately. His return from the west to Washington was caused by a personal reason iu addition to his desire to see tho president before the latter started on his western and southern tour. He will resume the discharge of the duties of his office when he returns to Washington. But if Governor Page, during the adjournment of the Vermont legislature which does not reassemble until a year rom next autumn should conclude to appoint Secretary Proct ir to tho senate to fill the vacancy to be caused by the resignation of Senator Edmunds, it is stated by the same authority that tbo secretary will accept tho appointment. This action is not likely to be taken until next fall and meautimo Secretary Proctor will doubtless oontinue to be a member of President Harrison's cabinet.
