Work on U»e Iftdiaua Midland, norih of Brezil, has been stopped owing to the trouble which is brewing between the Midland and the Fort Wayne, Terre Haute Si Southwestern over the possession of the old north and south grade, a right ggof way which is claimed by both companies. The latter is poshing the work on its line from Bainbridge to Brazil

and

promises to complete the work by June lut if pomible. The matter of the right of way has now gone before the Parke county courts for settlement and until a decision is reached neither road will bfable to tak& possession of the property in dispnte. Meanwhile the Chicago & Indiana coal !|g. road bss put on passenjeer trains from Brn%tl and is now furnishing good facilities both for shippeis and passengers. This will have a great deal o! weight with the citizens of Brazil who will very likely turn the gteater share of their patronage to the C. A I. C. in reciprocation of the passenger facilities furnished.

Hallway Rumbling*.

Live-stock Agent Hasbury, of the Clover Leaf route, is in the city. The cold weather has made coal business lively and already considerable coal has begun to move on the Terre Haute roads.

The Southwestern Freight Association disbanded yesterday and now all of the roads are hustling for frcijrbt in order to increase their per centsge u* the Western Traffic Association. ^flit was reported on Wail street yesterday that the Rockefeller interest have sold tho largest portion of their holdings in the Northern Pacific, the stock having made a handsome turn in the market.

Kates on Florida tourists tickets will be restored on the 35th inst., all roads having agreed to stop rate cutting. The present rate of &S6.50 fur the round trip good returning until June 1st will be taken off sale.

This morning the Chicago & Extern Illinois shipped thirty car loads of cattle from the distillery to Boston. The tfain goes by way of Cayuga and thence east over the Clover Leaf route. It is ono of the biggest shipments of live stodk that has been made from this city for months.

A large forte of workmen commeneed laying new steel rails on tho Big Four between Fontanet and Coal Btufi on Friday last. When this stretch is completed nearly all of the Big Four track from Indianapolis to Terre Haute will be laid of the best of steel rails, yisighing seventy pounds to the yard.

Hereafter passes issued* for men in charge of stock to return to point of shipment will be both descriptive and witn signature for identification. Thev will be issued only for a particular train on the day of issue, ant' the greatest care will be taken to prevent them falling into the hands of scalpers.

The Now York Central & Hudson River railroad report for the quarter ending December 31st, shows the gross earnings from operations to be $9,462,455.78 operating expenses, 15,84?.,681.13: net earnings from operations, $3,690,8*4 65

From June 30,1890, to January 21,1891, the gross passenger earnings of the system were $5,079,635,12, against $4,492,859.02 in tho corresponding period of 1890-1891, an increase oft$58tf,774.10. Of this $134,033.32 was from St. Louis and San Francisco, which earned $873.454.11, as compared with with$739,420.71) in the corresponding period a year ago.

Burlington earnings for 1890 show a heavy increase in gross by a corresponding increase in operating expenses and charges, not including dividends, making a loss in net earnings of |324,924.62. The gross earnings for the month of December were $2,815,731,98, a decrease of $384,045,47 as compared with the corresponding period of last year. The decrease is so pronounced that President Perkins is said to be thoroughly aroused over it and a number of radical changes are likely to be made.

The Americanized Encyclopedia Britanntea' above all like works at once meet the long felt want of the scholar, the student, ana the business man. TERSE llAura,'Ind„ Dec. IS, 1S90.

I have examined the "Americanized Encyclopedia Britannica" and have no hesitation in recommending it. Some good form of encyclopedia is desirable, almost necessary, in every home. It is but scant recomcndatlou to say this one has features that make it preferable to many Encyclopedias that are sold everywhere. I predict for the work a large measure of success. iVery truly yours,

THERE IS NOTHING NEW.

AIEXASTOEB the Great had a oopy of the "Iliad" inclosed in a nutshell, and it Is quite certain that it could not have been written without the aid of a microscope.

IK all that pertains to sculpture and painting the ancients knew so much that their superiority has never been questioned aud their work remains as unsurpassed models.

Axi, the mechanical powers, the screw, lever, pulley, incline plane, wedge, wheel and asle, were known to the anoients and used in every-day life. They were expert builders, as existing relics testify.

Is our schools at the present day we use "Euclid's Elements of Geometry," written by Euclid two thousand two hundred years ago. Euclid also wrote on music and optics, antedating much which wo think we discovered

THE people of Tyre were such experts in dyeing that the Tyrian purple remains unexcelled to this day. The Egyptians were also wonderful dyers and could produce colors so durable that they may be called imperishable.

THE ancients were wonderful glassworkers and discovered a method of making it malleable, which we have not been able to do. They could spin glass into garments, dye it into every shade of tho rainbow, and etch it with marvelous skill.

Twicjrry centuries before the birth of Watt, Hero of Alexandria described machines whose motive power was steam. He also invented a double force pump, used as afire engine, and anticipated the modern turbine wheel by a machine he named "NeolpUe."

LATAIID found in the ruins of Nineveh what Sir David Brewster pronounced to be a "magnifying glass and nearly four thousand years ago the Egyptians and Assyrians observed* the stars through a "sliding tube," which we have reason to believe was a telescope.

IK medical skill the Oriental physicians of India practiced vaccination 1,000 years ago. Anaesthetics were known in tho days of Homer, and the Chinese 3,000 years ago had a preparation of hemp, known as "na» vo," to deaden pain—something' similar to the' modem cocaine*
