GOSSIP ABOUT THE RAILWAYS

AS OTHER K17 MOB ABOfT THE SEW rsioar DIFOT.

It la to be Bail! by (be TawlftUc Completed Tarnet Over to a Slock Company •—Slotee.

A rumor was current among railroad men here to-day, which, if true, will pat an antirely sew phase on the building oC the new onion depot It is to the effect that while in New York President In galls, of the Big Four, effected an alliance with J. D. Mackey, president oC the Mackey system, whereby the later was to demand of the Vandalia that the Big Four be granted the privilege of entering the new depot on equal terms with the other lines. It is also said that Mr. Ingalls has effected a similar alliance with H. H. Porter, cbaumau of the board of directors of the Eastern Illinois, and that the latter will also join President Mackey in his demand that the Big Four be given equal rights with them in the new depot The wishes of Mr. Mackey and Mr. Porter have been communicated to vice president Williams,

of

the Vau-

dalia, and that the latter has opened a correspondence with president Ingalls in regard to the matter and that there if every possibility that the Big Four will be granted the privileges asked. It ie farther stated that it was the agreement between Messrs. Ingalls, Porter and Mackey that if the Vaudalia refused to confer with the Big Four interests in regard to their coming in the Mackey lines and the Eastern Illinois would join th« Big Four in the erection of a union depot at the corner of Tenth and Locust streets. This threat, it is claimed, has had the desired effect and negotiations are now in progress looking to an amiable settlement of the affair. The rumor goes on to say that it has been practically settled that all of the roads mentioned shall act in union in the building of the now structure, and when completed each will rthare a certain amount of the cost of such construction, or in other words when completed the new depot is to be paid for by all -of the roads entering it much on the plan of a stock company. It is stated that the Terre Haute & Peoria is the only road that will not take stock and thpt the affairs of the depot will be conducted by a board of managers to be composed of representatives of each of tne roads owning stock. The matter of letting the contracts, supervision of building, etc., will be conducted by the Vandalia and when completed the other lines will share in its cost. The truth of this rumor cannot be learned, as Mr. Williams is out of the city.

Railway Knmbllncs.

D. R. Patterson, general superintendent of the Eastern Illinois, is now en route home from Europe, where he has been for thirty days for the benefit of his bealtb. It is said that he is not much improved.

Within the past year the Union Pacific has built new shops at Cheyenne and Denver and a union passengerand freight depot at Omaha. A number of miles of new siding has been built, all of which hag entaileaenormoua expense.

The Chicago Erie announces the following changes: E. E. Georgia is appointed agent at Kingsland, Ind., vice J. B. Hilford, resigned. William F. Turret! is appointed master mechanic at Huntington, Ind., vice H. P. Latta, resigned. Mr. Turreff recently retired from a similar position on the Big Four.

The holding of nearly five thousand tickets from St. Paul to Chicago, via the Kansas City route, by ticket brokers, has caused commotion in railroad circles in the Northwest,'as they advertise an open rate from St. Paul to Chicago of 19.50. The regular rate $U,50. This announcment coming on top 6f the reported agreement as to the rates between the two cities will make a flairs as uncertain ui before the agreement.

Terre Haute has a number of young men of whom she can boast and who have by their own efforts climbed high of the railroad ladder. Among them may be mentioned William H. Tiruesdale, presi dent of the Minneapolis fe St. I.ouip William Peddle, superintendent of the New Jersey Central Charlie Rockwell, superintendent of the Toledo, Columbus Hocking Valley. John H. Taibott, commercial agent of the 0. M. & St. P. at Denver, Derb B. Caldwell, assistant general passenger agent of the Missouri Pacific George Samuels, chief train dispatcher of the Newport News A Mississippi Valley and Ogden Greenoujrh, chief train dispatcher of the Colorado Mid-

land. The floating debt of the Union Pacific has been reduced the past year by $4,000,000 and is now about $11,500,000. In MI interview at Boston Director Ames said: "We sold $7,100,000 collateral trust bonds issned against the Oregon railway and navigation stock, and now have $6 000,000 bonds unsold, besides $2,000,000 Oregon railway and navigation bonds for construction advances. There has been invested in the Portland & Paget Sound road $1,0000,000, and in new equipment $1,400,000, for which bonds have not ben sold. Mr. Gould knew all about the floating debt when he entered the di rectory, and he has discovered nothing new about it Hfragrped to take care of It, and has nrovided for January 1st requirements which are leas than $2,000,

reonwi 3,000," of the health

T. W. Barrows, train master JSattern Illinois is In very poor and hrs been with irlativaa to Ohio for the P5* ten days confined to his bed. Mr. Barrows is acting general superintendent in the absence of IX R. Patterson, but it is said tb*t his condition is *«iich as to compel him to retira from active service. It is stated on good authority that M. S. Connors, superintendent of the Peoria & Pekin onion will be annotated anperintendent of the Eastem Illinois and given charge of the train service in the event of Mr. Burrow's retirement which will he not fatter than Sanitary It Ills also said that D. H. PiMerson.srwQeral mperintendent, mav retire on February 1st on account of Ml ing health

Sydney Grundy's lut*Kxmiedy.

nder the management of 0. S. Bernini. Lloyd Wilson and wife, Edith Murill* (Mrs. Blair) and a competent cast will be engaged.

Anew play will be produced at the Grand opera house. New York, week of December 22d. It is called "Work and Wages."

Next Monday evening the one hundredth performance of the dramatic spectacle, "Claudius Nero," will be celebrated at Niblo'a.

Robert Buchanan sued Mrs. Langtry in London for not producing his new play, "Lad Gladys," and recovered a verdict of $750 with costs.

Angustin Daily will follow "The Last Word" with "School for Scandal," to be produced in an elaborate manner, with Ada Rehan as Lady Teazle.

The total nnmber of dramatic, operatic, specialty and minstrel companies which have stranded thus far this winter is 101. It is going to be a hard winter.

Harry Hine has secured the road rights for "The Merry Monarch," Francis Wilson's successful comic opera, and ^111 launch a great company next season. ^4|

The souvenir crsae has reached London so badly that even Henry Irving has caught the fever. He is giving away a handsome painting of Ravenswood to the lady patrons.

Samuel French & Son have bought the American and Australian rights to "The People's Idol," which is soon to be played at the opening of Wilson Barrett's new theater.

Agnes Robertson Boucicault's benefit netted over $1,000. The feature was the scene from the "Long Strike" between the beneficiary and J. H. Stoddard. The Kendals paid $100 for two seats.

W. H. Crane will occupy the Star Theatre, New York, all next year. He will go into producing new plays, two of which have been accepted one by Clinton Stuart and one by Augustus Thomas.

Harry Hamlin says "The Fakir's" business is ahead of what it was last season. That is very natural. The company is better, the play has been improved and its success in one city means its success in another.

Polytechnic Jfotes.

Professor Ames has returned to work at the institute after a severe illness. The shops are now thoroughly lighted by electricity, the plant being a great success.

Several students will spend the holidays with relatives and friends in the surrounding towns.

The boys are all preparing for examinations which commence next Thursday. At present it looks as if there will be a number of absences in the school after the holidays.

1

Professor Wickersham has been called to Indianapolis by the serious illness of bis brother. He has himself been ill for the past few days, causing his absence from the school.

A SEVERE ATTACK OF CROUP

THE CHILD'S LIFK SAVED BY CHAMBERLAIN'S COUGH REMEDY. I wish to say to the public that Chamberlain's Cough Remedy is the best I have ever used or sold for croup. I am never without it at my home for my children. Last winter a child of Mr. E. J. Wetzel, one of my costomers, was chocking with sudden and severe attack of croup. I gave him a bottle of this Cough Remedy, and he started for home, gave the child two doses of it, which stopped the coughing and smothering instantly and in a few minutes the little one was out of all danger. Mr Wetzel came back to the store as happy as he could be and said "That battle of Cough R6medy saved the life of my child." Furthermore I feel friendly towards you as the manufacturers of such a valuable Remedy and am proud of its being manufactured in our own state. I can cheerfully and willingly give many instances of its good works to anyone that may want a reliable cough remedy.
