At 11:30 last night a teriffic heed end collision occurred on the Evansville Time Haute road one mile south of Purcells and five mik* south of Vincennes in whicli Engineer Edward Tohill and an unknown man lost their lives and two locomotives and a number of

smashed to pieces. The cause of the wreck is unknown and only the investigation, which occurs to»day, will reveal it. Tho engineer wlio came to his death in the wreck was on engine 100 which was hauling north bound freight No. 20. The train was moving at a Uvely rate of speed and when it reached a point one mite south el Fur* cells the engineer and firemen sighted train No, ly, a sooth bound freight, just ahead and rounding die end of a long curve. Tl»e crew on train N'o. 19 saw No. 20 about the same time and all jumped to the ground. The fireman on Engine 100 also jumped, but it reported Iters that Engineer Itohill remained on hie engine and rode into the wreck. Both engines were badly amaahed op, bnt are not beyond repairf. The L. E. A St. L. has three gravel trains at work hauling gravel from the 15. A T. H. gravel pit to be used on tiie road bed of the former. President Mackey has ordered some extensive improvements on that line to be completed by Fall.

The Illinok Central yesterday completed the repairs made necessary on its Southern line by the late flood in the Mississippi River Valley,and commenced running trains through to New Orleans on its own tracks for the first time for several weeks.

In the case of the Michigan Onlral for violation of the interstate commerce law at Chicago, yesterday, Alexander Maekay, general freight agent of the road, was acquitted and the cases of Nichols and Summers were taken under advisement. This leaves Arthur Streot, ex-assistant general freight agent, to sutler the penalty of the law. He will |robab}v be fined a nominal sum. r'4

The Chicago & Atchison bridge company has notified the Santa Fe that after July 1st all toll rates at Atchison wonld be restored to $5 a car. The Santa Fe has issued an order that all freight originating at Atchison for the East shall be sent by way of Kansas City. There is talk of organizing a local company for the construction of another bridge across the Missouri river at Atchison.

The Missouri Pacific and oilier roads have requested that Chairman J. E. Goddard, of the Western Passenger Association, call a meeting of the trans-Missouri committee of that association to meet in Kansas City to take action regarding the winding up of the affairs of the old TransMissouri Passenger Association, over whose territory the jurisdiction of the Western Passenger Association now extends.
