it will leave only the Vandalia and Hante & Peoria to enter the one which Architect Hajnnaford is now design* ing for the former company. The^deal, although now only in the e'mbrro, will lie poshed as fast as possible and W. C. Irwin, chief engineer of the Big Fonr and a corjw of engineer?! are expected here in a short time to look over the gronnd. It is to be hoped tliat nothing will be allowed to stand in the way of this commendable piece of enterprise and that the roads which are active enough to go into it will reap a harvest from an increased passenser traffic. The Vandalia has been asleep for years and has allowed the old rookery at the corner of Tenth and Chestnnt streets to stand as long as the people of thiscity will tolerate it, and this enterrising move on the put of the Big Fonr jould be justly rewarded.

J. S. Taibott, generalagent of tlie C., & St. P. at Denver, arrived in the city with his bride yesterday.
The Vandalia (pile driver Went to St. Joseph yesterday to drive piles for the new round house which is to be erected there.
Every road centering at Cleveland is tied up. The threatened switchmen's strike was ordered yesterday. They demand $2.50 for day and £2.75 for night work—the Chicago scale.
The telegraph line along the line of the Indiana & Lake Michigan road from South llend and St. Joseph will be completed to-morrow and anew Office cut in at the Northern terminus as soon as the wires are up.
Jolm Weaver, night foreman of the Vandalia round house, has resigned his position and left to-day for Indianapolis, where he has accepted a much better position. Otto Burgett has been appointed his successor.
W. F. Merrill, general manager of the Kansas City, St. Joseph & Council Bluffs Railroad, has been appointed genera) manager of the Chicago, Burlington & Quincy, to succeed h. P. Ripley. Mr. Merrill will assume the duties of his new office al)out August 1st
The Eastern Illinois special car, carrying President George W. 8anl, General •Superintendent I). R. Patterson, Train Master A. S. Paige, Paymaster A. S. Cullorn and Treasurer C. W. Hi Hard passed through the city yesterday en route to Chicago. They llad been on an inspection tour over the C. & I. C.
The deposing of Julius Dexter from the presidency of the C. II. & D., and the election of M. D. Woodford to tlie presidency and Eugene Zimmerman to tlie vice'presidency is in consonance with the prediction made by THE NKWS some weeks ago. C. W. Fairbanks, president of tho Terre- Haute & Peoria is elected to a seat in the directory which means that the Fairbanks-Zim-merman party were victorious over the Sage-Dillon party and that as soon as matters can be arranged steps will be taken looking to either the purchase or lease of the Terre Haute Peoria and probably the I. A S. Railroad men here predict that if the T. II. & P. is purchased tho C. II. & D. will lmild from Iridianh|K)lis to this city and that if the I. D. A S. is also added a s,iur of the latter will be built down the old canal bed to this city.
The North American Company was incor{orat«"d in New Jersey Saturday with Henry Villard as president. The capital stock is $50,000,000. The Northern Pacific Railroad Company having agreed to place at the disposal of the Oregon A Transcontinental Company a sufficient amount of the consolidated 5 per cent bonds contract has'beet) entered into with a strong syndicate, under which the payment of the outstanding bonds, under tlie terms of the mortgage, on Nov. 1, 1890, is assured. The object of the corjwration is to give tlie company more extensive powers tlian tlie old body. The new company offers to exchange 400,000 full paid shares at i»r fora corresponding number of old Oregon A Transcontinental, and thirty days are allowed for tlie exchange. The advantage claimed for the new enterprise is that the company can operate in two special fields—railroad financierin and the promotion of elcctric light an power enterprises.
The annual report of tlie C. II. A D. shows net earnings for the year ending March 31, 1890, $1,400,915, an increase of $1.%327. The total earnings for 1800 were $3,565,178, an increase of $86,203, Tlie total operating expenses showed an increase of $71,790. It is explained that the comparison is not fair becanse it does not include in 1$90 tlie 0}erations of the Cincinnati Richmond A Chicago and a jortion of the Cincinnati, Jackson A Mackinaw. If these had been included tlie grew* earnings would be $200,000 greater. Hie board of directors Will hereafter be elected yesrly, one class to serve one year, one two years and one three yearn. C, W. Fairbanks, Wm. A. Proctor and Henry F. Shoemaker were tlie new directors elected and the old board will be re-elected. M. D. Woodford will be elected president instead of Julius Dexter and Kogene Zimmerman vice president. Of the ten millions of the alleged Mock tamed by I wi A Co., there yet remains ootstsndlng and claimed against the company, $2,400,900. In retiring the portion that has thus far been taken ia the company has authorised and put ont an issue of $553,600 preferred 4 per «enL stock.
