Taking up The N*ws* line of argument in favor of a new Union depot for Terr* Haute the Indianapolis Journal makes the following comment this morning
Were the several roads centering at Terre Haute to take hold of the enterprise of building a new Union depot at that point it could be made an an easy undertaking for all parties: interested. A location could be selected which would be convenient to all, and the cost of fitting up the ground and adjusting the tracks to make approach to the depot convenient and direct would be, comparatively speaking triflng. This improvement can be made at much leas cost at the present time than ten or even five years from now, «o rapidly is Terre Haute increasing in population and Its property advancing in value. Doubtless title city council would lend its aid to the enterprise by allowing the crossing of streets or the vacation of some to secure the much-needed improvement.
The Journal secured for Indianapolis what Th* Ksws proposes to secure for Terre Haute—a union depot thatis worthyjof the name, a structure which will be a credit to the cUv and its numerous railroads and a building which will afford decent and respectable accommodations for the traveling public. The present union depot is a disgrace not only to the city but to the men who allow it to stand. It has been "painted and repainted. Thousands of dollars worth of repairs have been made on it and yet it stands Unlay an unsightly affair which fKjoole are afraid to enter for fear of contagion. The place is kept as elean as it is possible to keep an old building and it has now reached a point where the only way on earth to repair it is with a new one. President M. K. Ingalls, of the Big Four Ss said by one of the officials of that company who was in the city yesterday to favor the erection of a handsome union depot in this city. With both Mr. Ingails and President Mackev in favor of such a move only a few other roads remain to be drawn into the scheme. JS1M

The Chicago & Alton directors have declared the regular quarterly dividend of 2 per cent, on all stock, payable March 1st,
There is much speculation as to when the Vandalia will begin to operate the Indiana 4k Lake Michigan railway. The road is all complete ana in fair condition, yet it has been given out that It will not be opened for tr (fic before March 15.
The preliminary statement of the Union Pacific railroad for December shows: Gross earnings, 18,784,708 increase, $273,084: net earnings, $798,074 decrease, #175,088. For twelve months, to December 31, the gross earnings were $31 070,181 increase, $875,660, net earnings, $12,370,(568, increaser$051,64«.
As soon as the spring weather is fairly opened up the work of putting up teU graph lines from South Bend to St, Joseph, Mich., will be begun under the direction of Superintendent of Telegraph, R. B. Woolsey, of the Vandalia. There is only forty miles of wire to be out up and the work can be completed In about two weeks.
It has been given out by parties who are in a position to know that the headluarters of the Logan division of the
Vandalia will remain in this city after the St. Joseph extension is added to this division. Logansport will be the end of the Terre Haute division of the road and some of the crews will be obliged to live there but the majority of them will live In .t
There was a queer accident near the union depot this morning. The C. A E. I. switch engine with a heavy train of ears was backing down towards the E. & T. H. yards, when tne car left the track at the switch. Three others followed in succession before the train could be stopped. Each car turned in an opposite direction when it left the rails, and all four were slg sag acrces the track. Considerable trouble was experienced in get* ting them back onto the track.
The annual statement of the Southern Pacific Oomoany tor the year 1889 shows a small Increase in the net earnings and an excee* of earnings over operating expenses, but other causes, among which was the construction of new hqes, decrease the surplus to $!,3U4,2&S, sgasost m,mjm for 18$S. The gross earnings from railroad and steamship lines for the last year were $l«Ll#,m the total expenditures $l4801,m The business throughout the northern part of California, in Oregon and on the Atlantic system of the^ Southern Pacific Company shows improvement fur the year.

A story is told in an Allahabad paper of a Brahmin, who, living at Mooghyr, rejoiced in the possession of an amulet which had fallen to him from long generation* of ancestors. Like most amulets, however, it proved no charm against poverty, and, reduced by the panfgsof hunger to the last extremity, the Brahmin went to a goldsmith and Offered his amulet for sale. The goldsmith broke it up to test the quality of the metal, and discovered within its hollow center a scrap of papa- covered with minute reading, which recorded that close to the shrine of Pir Shah Napol there lay buried treasure to the value of fourteen lacs of rupees. The Brahmin has now obtained the sanction of the government to have the plot of ground excavated. A rich Mahajan of Monghyr has taken a contract for digging the ground, on condition that a six anna share of the entire property be given to him. The government will take onefourth mid the remainder will be the Brahmin's. Many laborers have been en-1 gaged to dig up the place, but no trace of the money has yet been discovered. that province the crops this
year have been entirely lost. The harvest was, morec rer, very bad in fortyeight other districts. Only in twentythree districts did the peasantry get enough food for themselves and their live stock for the winter. It is announced that in many {daces the peasants are killing their horses rather than see them starve. Nearly 100,000 horses' are said to have already been thus destroyed, and their carcasses sold as manure. In some parts there are large heaps of the bodies of horses now lying on the roadside. In one district 1,500 horses are said to have been sold at the price of sixpence ahead to a manufacturer of compost, as the railway rates are too high to make the export of the emaciated animals pay.— London Standard. §m
