W. R. FREFMAN, Esq,, the gifted artist returned last evening.
THE Grantites weep because J. Bazoo Brown cannot come to time.
at the
TIIEKB is but little business being transacted in any of the courts to-day.
IT is the prevailing opinion that Indiana will cast the majority vote for Greeley.
BILLY LAKE only brought suit ^gainst the city for damages in the sum of $5,000.
THE city seems to be unlucky in the matter of adverse verdicts in damage suifs.
SCKIUXKU'S for October is an intensely interesting number of one of the most popular of American magazines.
GEOKOE CABRICO has re-purchased his old livery establishment, aud wants to see all his old business friends, and new ones too.
BAZOO BROWN is filling an engagement in New York, aud cannot appear in behalf of Mr. Grant, iu this city, as advertised.
BRIDGET MULHOLLEN was sentenced to a short term of imprisonment in the county jail, in the Criminal Court j'esterday, on a charge of larceny.
REMEMBER that the GAZETTE is the only office in the city owning a Rook Bindery. Our Bindery is in complete working order and we warrant all work.
SOON the city fire bells will "be tolled through the subtle agency of electricity when it is neccssary to sound an alarm, (hen all will be sounded simultaneously.
MRS. NELSON'S funeral was, last evening, fixed for this afternnoou at three o'clock, to occur at the Parlors of the Terre llaute House. Rev. E. F. Howe to officiate.
THE GAZETTE has long had the reputation of doing the best Job work in the city, and we propose to keep it up. We employ none but first class workmen, and -use the best material that cau be found.
THE ladies of the First Presbyterian Church will give an oyster supper (first of the season) and festival to-morrow (Thursday) evening at the church structure, North Seventh street. All are invited, and admission free.
THE St. Louis Globe man sarcastically says that Nilsson sailed from Liverpool for New York Saturday. She will probably act as second iu the Lucca-Kellogg mill, having had some experince in the busiuess with Cary.
ZIMMERMAN, of the Valparaiso Messenger, and Williams, of the Northern Indianian, had a slight misunderstanding, whereupon the former challenged to mortal combat the latter, who declined on the ground that the challenger was not his peer.
THE Terre Haute Typographical Uniou Ky* are making extensive preparations for a grand Thanksgiving Ball, atDowling Hall, on the evening of the 28th of November, Thanksgiving day. We commend the enterprise to the pa trope of "hops,'?
Mistaken Identity.
Some adroit confidence rascal drew $3,000 from the Indiana Banking Company, on a forged check, yesterday, and succeeded in making his escape.
Notice was given to the officers of the law at various points, to apprehend the daring villain. Accompanying the notice was a description of the perpetrator of the successful swindle. Our officers were on the alert, and when the westward bound express train over the I. and St. L. Iiailroad reached this city, a man answering the description of the forger was pointed out and at once secured, and, he claims, was quickly carried off the train into custody without being given an opportunity of speaking with the lady accompanying him. The gentlemau established his claim to be an innocent man in due time and was released. It appears that he was en route from Kentucky with his sister, whom he was escorting to St Mary's, where she is to attend school. Be ing thus summarily separated from her, she was terribly frightened, and lauded at St. Mary's all alone, and laboring un der the most excrutiating apprehensions for the safety of her brother, and embarrassment incident to her own loneliness and distress.
This great wrong done them both has been righted so far as the officers could do it, but the victim of mistaken identity is not yet happy.
Passenger Train Ditched.
The Eastern bound night express train, on the Indianapolis & St. Louis Railroad, conducted by Black and engineered by Morris, when near Matton was ditched by a broken rail. The train was running at the rate of fifteen or twenty miles per hour, and though the engine, baggage car and three passenger coaches were instantly hurled from the track to the ditch with great violence none were hurt, except the engineer and fireman, who were quitejseverely injured the former.suffering a dislocated shoulder and the latter a broken arm. The passengers and their baggage were transferred to another train the wounded men cared for, and a wrecking force left to remove the debris and repair the track aud when this city was reached by the extra the passengers were not more than two hours and a half behind the regular time, and we see by the Sentinel that they were hardly two hours behind card time when they reached Indianapolis.
So far as could be ascertained nobody was to blame for the accident, having resulted from a defect in the railing.

The Music Hall was packcd to overflowing, it being difficult for some time before the reading commenced to obtain a seat and when the curtain rose standing room could hardly be found. During the forenoon the rush forseats was unprecedented here. In the course of the afternoon large numbers who applied were refused tickets. The admiration of Laura Keene's acting in this city is general and enthusiastic. Never was such an interest displayed by the public in the performance of any company, Last night's entertainment gave the highest degree of satisfaction to those present.
Miss Laura will surely attract a large attendance at the Opera House in this citj', Saturday night. She is not only a finished actress but an accomplished lady, and merits well of the community.
Reserved seats are selling with unprecedented rapidity at Bartlett's, that is, so far as this season is concerned.
SIZE considered, we receive no newspaper of more ability and interest than the Titusville Evening Press, including the Sunday morning issue. The new publication is owned and edited by W W. Bloss, formerly of the Herald, same city, who is ably assisted by Charley Leonard, also formerly of the Herald, but latterly of the Cleveland Leader and St Louis Globe, now associate editor of the Evening Press. The publication is independent in partisan politics, and is most eiuphatically the people's paper. Iu all its various departments it is equalled by very few and excelled by none of like pretensions. Long may it wave. We venture to suggest that after the Titusvillans have read the Press a year, there will ^e more buttonless clothing and champion laughers than in any other city of like proportions on the globe.
State Liberal Meeting.
A meeting was held in the Hall of the House of Representatives, at Indianapolis last night, of the Democrats and Lib eral Republicans. There was a full discussion as to the prospects in the November election, aud as to the work to be done. Nearly every portion of the State was represented. The feeling very generally prevailed that Mr. Greeley could hardly fail to carry the State by as large a majority as Mr. Hendricks did. With work, it was felt that that majority could be very largely increased, "A majority of the people of Indiana prefer Greeley to Grant," was the universal expression. A determination was evinced by all present to poll a full vote, and so carry the State for Greeley and Brown.
His "Best Holts."
An inebriated individual dropped into the office of a prominent lawyer of this city, a few days since, and insisted that the p. 1. should champion his claim to justice, as administed in the municipal Police Court, The lawyer in vain persisted in asserting that he did not do business in that court. The would be client as persistently iusisted that he should take his case anyhow, finally assuring the lawyer that police courts were his "best holts." The persecuted attornejT could eudure no more, and, arising in his wrath, he seized the fellow by the collar and hurled him into outer darkness.
Suicide.
This niorniug a shoemaker named Henry Laymau, residing on the LaFayette road, arose about five o'clock and commenced his diurnal labors and pegged faithfully and persistently for a short time, and then went out into a back room, where his wife was horrified to discover his lifeless body shortly afterwards suspended between ceiling and floor, having hanged himself.
It is said that he was rather impecunious, could not pay his.bills prolnptly, and was also jealous of his wife, though without just cause and it is presumed that he was thus led to the commis^^n Qf th? act that deprived him of life.
Matrimonial.
ous career, is the wish of many friends and acquaintances. The GAZETTE extends the customary congratulations.
THE Express is to issue a Sunday instead of a Monday morning paper after the 1st of November. We believe that there is a fine field for such an enterprise, but it would be vastly more enterprising if the Express were to isnue a paper each day in the week. Iu fact the management display but little enterprise ard undergo uo extra outlay of lucre by issuing on Sunday instead of Monday.
