Faithfulness Rewarded.
We see by the dispatches that the late Wm. H. Seward bequeaths a handsome fortune to his adopted daughter, Miss Olive Risley Seward. Miss Risley came to be adopted by Mr. S. because she was a splendid phonographer, and a most estimable and accomplished young lady. Some three years since she succeeded Mr. Samuel Barrows, of Washington, as Mr. Seward's private secretary, and diecharged the arduous duties of that position of trust and profit during the trip of the great Secretary around the world. Returning about a year since, Mr. Seward dictated to Miss Risley a book of travel, which was placed in the hands of the publishers but recently, and we opine when issued, that it will be one of the most important of its kind ever written. To a laudable ambition to prepare this vast work for the publisher did Mr. Seward owe his prolonged existence, for he had long been on the eve of final dissolution but was loth to surrender his lease on life while he had not yet sent in his last copy of a book for the benefit of mankind. This work will not only be a monument to his memory, but it will also be an example of feminine usefulness and competion in a profession where there are few competitors—phonographic writing. Miss Risley, through her own exertions, acquired a most useful and remunerative profession, and participated in the production of a most valuable work and at the same time became the adopted daughter and a onefourth heir to the princely estate of the distinguished author. Ladies will do well to imitate Miss Risley instead of Susy Anthony, Victoria Woodhull or Col. Clafilin.
Silver Wedding.
W. H. JFinkbaine, one of the fat and jolly conductors of the Vandalia line, and his estimable companion of a qurter of a century, were most agreeably surprised the other evening, by a host of their innumerable friends of Cincinnati, Louisville, St. Louis, Terre Haute and other cities, who swarmed down upon them about dusk, with all manner of silverware, with which the various guests had provided themselves. The hosts were not expecting anything of the kind, hence their feelings might be far better imagined than described, when their guests commenced to arrive at their Indianapolis mansion. Over fifty presents were givep the hosts in honor of the silver weddiug anniversary—twenty-five years. Among other presents, a beautiful solid sterling silver fruit stand, the gift of the passenger conductors Of the Indianapolis & St. Louis Railroad, and a solid silver salad bowl by the passenger conductors of the Vandalia Railroad sugar spoon and cream ladle, Chas. R. Peddle, of this city one berry spoon of solid silver, Owen Tuller and wife, Terre Haute, and, in fact, too many to mention in this notice.
Dancing and general festivities were the order of the evening until a late hour, when the guests repaired to their various homes, much pleased with their evening's entertainment, leaving the happy pair to their own sweet reflections on the beautiful realities of genuine friendship.
A Sad Case.
A most pitiable spectacle was presented at the Mayor's court yesterday afternoon. An employee of the Terre Haute office of the Evansville & Crawfordsville Railroad ushered into the presence of His Honor a mere youth, who gave his name as Russell, and who had been detected in the very act of breaking into a car of that line, felonously openiug a box of raisins and filling his pockets therefrom. The offender, a mere child, was turned over to an officer who recognized him at once, and the complainant sent before the Grand Jury to give in his testimony. The question is, what should be done with one so young in years and so old in sin as the youthful Russell.
MR. GRANT'S Terre Haute paper per sists in its empty and villainous charges against Mr. Hendricks, and begets the contempt of all honorable men for its pains. Would it not be just as well for the vile organ to let up on the successful candidate for Gubernatorial honors in this State, when some of the best men in the Radical party scratched the name of Browne from their tickets, thus in suring his (H.) election Is not this very factja sufficient rebuke to the slanders of this irresponsible slanderer who presides over Mr. Grant's Terre Haute paper?
IN reporting a grand banquet in honor of Father Burke, the reporter of the St. Louis Olobe feels confident that
Attentive waiters pressed the guests to partake of the good things placed before them, and insisted on the reporters of the daily press, in a richness of brogue which was perfectly in unison with the viands, to "ate a little anyhow."
The only thing remarkable in this connection is really wonderful, and that is, that St. Louis reporters should be importuned to "ate a little anyhow." As a general thing, they must be dragged from a banquet hall, to prevent them "ating" everything edible.
A LITERARY exchange says: ANNA DICKKNSON is to lecture on the question, "What Hinders
Really we know of nothing to hinder her unless it be that the public can get more information by paying five cents for a newspaper, than by squandering seventy-five cents on a lecture, to say nothing of the comforts and cenvenience of remaining around the fireside during the evening, to attending a lecture.
A NEW limestone pavement, much needed, is to be put down around the Vigo Court House building at an early date. There is also a ipovemant on foot with a view of selling the Court House, the County Jail and some other property belonging to this county. Something certainly should bo done to give us a County Jail fit to incarcerate a criminal, &u«i a Court House where the jury and the court can hear the evidence in oases on trial.
To deaden the effect of Farnsworth's oratorial shot that "Morton put that in," comes the news that President Grant is preparing his next annual message. At least that eminent Grantsheet, the InterOcean, says the President is oalling tor the department reports, having begun his auqual message.
ENGINEER MCCUTCHEON, of tl^e Evansville & Crawfordsville Railroad, represents, in a very able manner, the Terre Haute division of the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers, at the National Convention of the order, now in session at St. Louis.
THE Newport Hoosier State says The widow of Martin Myers, a master mechanic on the Chicago, Danville & Vincennes railroad, who was killed in a drunken melee, has begun a suit claiming $0,000 damages against the saloon keeper.
In cases where saloon keepers sell intoxicating liquors in intoxicating quantities to those whom they know are in the habit of drinkiug thereof to excess the s. k. should be made to pay the damages that may result.
GOLD IN FAYETTE !—Mr. Caleb Gar trell informs us that while visiting a friend in Fayette township last week he prospected for gold in one of the creek beds of that locality. In about two hours he "rocked out" one dollar's worth of gold Mr. Gartrell is an old California miner, and he thinks considerable gold will be found in Fayette township some day if people are disposed to work for it —Journal.
