THURSDAY, OCTOBER 17,1872.

City and Neighborhood.

SEE notice of keys found.

BEN BUTLER is in his district of Massachusetts.

THE splendid rain of last evening was much needed in this municipality.

ALEXANDER & JOHNSON have oysters for the wholesale and retail trade each day in the week.

IT is a tnelaticho'y fact for newspaper men and readers that Congress will convene in December.

THE Hon. S. R. Hamill of Sullivan, has turned his attention from politics and law, to stock raising.

Go TO the Terre Haute House this eveuing and witness the wonders of manufacturing gas from water.

WE understand that C. Rose, Esq., contemplates the construction of a palatial mansion on the vacant lot, southeast comer of Chestnut and Seventh streets.

JOHN DILLON, the comedian, has just married his fourth wife. Getting married seems to be John's chief relaxation when off the boards.—St. Louis Globe.

John is very rash when drunk.

MR, GRANT'S Evansville paper knowingly asserts that: The personal assaults upon Morton, like those upon Hartranft, of Pennsylvania, strengthened the Republican party.

Of course, proving a candidate morally as well as politically corrupt would strengthen him with the Administration supporters.

THE Indianapolis Journal says that The Vaudalia Short Line lately received three new Baldwin locomotive engines and is expecting two more next month. The company now owns sixty-four locomotives valued at about $650,000.

And the Vaudalia Company, even now, has not enough engines to haul their hundreds of heavily laden coaches and cars over their track.

SHAKSPEAUB, of the Chicago Post, did this with his left hand tied behind him: "Voorhees—the Tall Svcamore of the Wabash—is syc-more than he was before the election."—/St. Louis Globe. "Too far-fetched" even forShakspeare, who thinks himself Pos£-ed in all things. No doubt be is posted on the books of the recording angel, for lying. If there be any truth in Orthodoxy he has a running account there.

THE Hon. Richard Dunnigan has been appointed by the Court to defend Audrew J. Miller, the man who murdered his patriarchial father-in-law, Irwin. The defendant in this desperate case is not able to pay an attorney, hence the appointment by the Court. Mr. D. is a humane gentleman, as well as a briliant young lawyer, and if the defeudant cau le saved from the halter he (D.) will accomplish that result.

Half and Half.

This morning the Terre Haute Journal, in the most quiet way possible, run up the Liberal Presidential Electoral ticket at the head of its columns. There are the names of the Electors, but the editor forgets that Horace Greeley and B. Gratz Brown had anything to do with it. He is only troubled with a short memory, that's all. Now, hnviugconie half over, wouder when he will maintain his consistency and .support the entire movement?

THOSE who come among us to eugage in business, and who find it necessary to invest their capital in their business, experience the greatest difficulty iu securing a tetaporary abiding place for their families. Rents are high, and even fabulous prices cannot command a respectable abode, always. No sooner is a small house vacant than the tide of tenants commences to ebb and flow. We know of a very small and uncomfortable house, vacated a few day since, whiph has been visited by the representatives qf some ten or t^elyp families. AH this gp,es to nhow increase in th^ population pf our City, and also to shgw that tyja want

GAS FROM WATER.

Wonderful Result of a Simple Process.

Alladdin's Lamp in l»e Shade.

The notice in the GAZETTE of last afternoon that Mr. Howard Tilden, of Philadelphia, inventor of a perfect system of manufacturing a superior article of gas from water and a few almost as cheap ingredients, was in the city and would exhibit his wonderful discovery at the Terre Haute House in the evening, attracted a room full of our prominent business men, "medicine men" and schollarly men of various professions, including several members of the Terre Haute branch of the American Association for the Advancement of Science.

Mr. Tilden, a very affable gentleman, and beyond the meridian of life some years, discoursed readily and fluently on the attractive features of his invention as compared with those of similar character attempted by his predecessors for over half a century. Others had discovered the great principle of removing certain qualities from the aqueous fluid, thereby leaving the waters of the ocean iu a condition to burn unquenchably. He, however, had reduced the principle to practice by an almost accidental discovery.

Having concluded his remarks he proceeded to elucidate the pre-eminent qualities of his invention, eliciting exclamations of wonderment and admiration from the spectators as he proceeded.

A tank shaped something like a waterfilter, but divided into various compartments for the several ingredients, is provided in which to generate the subtle substance. Near the top of this tank is compartment filled full of shavings, such as are used in some matresses. At the bottom of the tank is another compartment filled with carbon oil. These are connected by an iron tube. Between these two compartments is suspended a small pan filled with iron shavings. Around this is a reservoir. Common well or cistern water is poured into this receptacle, and a quantity of sulphuric acid is added, and the cap is placed on and forced gently down. Common gas burners attached to the machine are then lighted, the air blowing off meanwhile.

When the atmosphere has been blown out of these tubes a powerful, clear and beautiful jet of light springs up and burns with great vigor, emitting a brilliancy of illumination attained by no other substance. Mr. Tilden attached a two foot burner to the gas generator and a four foot burner to the gas fixture of the room and it was the general verdict that the former was the superior of the latter in light giving force.

The inventor then tried the same experiments on a glass generator, which was the more successful way of demonstrating to the incredulous the manner in which the great result was attained. By this it was shown that so soon as the jet of flame is extinguished the substances from which the gas is made separates and remains so until the jet is again lighted, and according to Mr. Tilden, would remain in that state weeks and months. The iron chip filling and sulphuric acid and water department must be replenished when the supply of gas manufactured is exhausted by burning, but the "excelsior" or shavings will never fail, hence never need changing.

The flames cannot be blown out by the air from the human lungs, or by waiving violently to and fro in a strong current of air. A common whisky or oil barrel can be used as a tank, and when monufacted full will cost but little, and will furnish gas for a large dwelling or store room for several nights. Mr. Tilden claims that this can be manufac tured from one-third to one-fourth cheaper than coal gas is now sold in this city, though he did not put it in that way exactly.

The machine, if manufactured from metal, need not cost more than fifteen dollars, and if made with a whisky barrel, need cost not more than three dollars. We think the invention one of the greatest importance, and that seemed to be the prevailing opinion last evening with those who witnessed its wonderful workings. We hope and expect that our business men and citizens will give it the attention it merits.

OBITUARY.

Mrs. Dorcas Cookerly.

It becomes our sad duty this day to chronicle the death of Mrs. Dorcas Cookerly, whose Christian spirit flitted across the valley of death over beyond the beautiful river last night, after having abided in the mortal tenement of clay for ninety years and seven days.

Mrs. Cookerly was a most remarkable lady, being noted for acts of Christian charity while in life, and Christian resignation when the death throes came upon her, after life's fitful fever was over.

Deceased was born in Frederick county, Maryland, in 1872, her maiden name being Dorcas Hughes, aunt to Judge James Hughes.

Having readied maturity, she was married to the father of ex-Mayor Cookerly, came to this State and settled at Bloomicgton, in the year 1836, thence to Terre Haute, about thirty years siuce, where she has resided ever since. In IB23, her husband died, siuce which time blie remained a widow until her death, which occurred as noted above.

For some time she has been failing, but her relatives did not know until last evening that her lease of life was rapidly expiring. She had beeu a suffererer from asort of dropsical affection of the heart, which is presumed to have hastened her demise. Up to the last moment of her life she remained conscious, being fully aware of approaching dissolution and perfectly resigned to the Supreme will.

Deceased leaves but three children, all sons, she having survived six daughters, who have preceded her to the tomb.

The funeral services will occur from the late residence on North Sixth street, to-morrow morning at 10 o'clock, and will be according to the rites of the Presbyterian Church, deceased haviug been a faithful member of the first church of that denomination in tbis city.

Jji a notice of a complimentary concert tendered Mr. Parsons, the Indianapolis Evening News says:

Mrs, J. A. Murray sang "The Return." $ 6G$g which gave lull ocomaas to her vpll modulated voice.
