WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 16,1872.

City and Neighborhood.

ADVERTISE in the Evening GAZETTE.

COUNCIL proceedings in another column. WHERE, oli, where are our water works

READ the GAZETTE advertisements, carefully. THE political excitement has somewhat subsided in this municipality.

GAS generated from water is the latest novelty, patented by Howard Tilden.

THE County Auditor is having a little settlement with the City and State Treasurers. __

IT is stated that Mrs. Horace Greeley is in ill health, and that her demise may be expected at any time.

THE Evansville Courier correspondent, Abt, has found it convenient to visit the Hot Springs in Arkansas.

POVERTY FLAT stands out in bold relief in the columns of Evansville newspapers. Give the readers rest.

C. F. TRAVIS, U. S. Counsel at Brazil, accompauied by his wife, were guests of the Terre Haute House, yesterday

Now THAT the abundant local crop of grapes has been harvested, enterprising grocers are bringing them from abroad.

THE Buckeye .Store is going into the fall campaign in most vigorous style, and can but win good will and a large custom.

THIRTEEN counties yet to hear from officially, before it can be fully determined who are and who are not elected in this State.

W. F. KING, late city editor, hits assumed chief editorial charge of the Evansville Courier, and Mr. C. E. Roberts manages the city department.

THE bridge of the Terre Haute & South western Railroad over the Wabash, is being constructed, and will be thrown across Chenoweth Ferry this season.

THE immitation of catterwaul, given by Fred. Wilson, at the minstrel performance, was by special request of the modest managers of the Printing House paper.

Now that Mrs. Kellogg has returned, why would it not be well for her and others of our local talent to favor the public with one of their popular home ceucerts?

THESwine Breeders' Convention in Indianapolis, ou the 20th of November. The Indiaua farmers are taking a lively interest in improving their stock, we are gratified to announce.

SEE notice in another column of new "Gas Machine." It is said to be a great saving in cost. All of our citizens are invited to call at the Terre Haute House this evening and see it in operation.

TERRE HAUTE streets should be numbered as are those in Philadelphia then the rapid growth of the city would not so seriously confuse those who would fain have their houses properly numbered.

HARRY TRAQUAIR is the sprightliest usher of our acquaintance. He succeeded in seating the large audience that attended the minstrel performance last evening, without causing any confusion.

ACCORDING to the proceedings of the City Council, the gas company comes down $2.50 per poston the lighting of the street lamps. Gasoline talk surely did accomplish something in the iuterestof the city.

As a noteworthy fact we mention the many persons in attendance at the Grand Opera House last evening, who did not attend amusements there last season. The most of them are new comers, .attracted by the superior beauties, manufacturing, and mercantile advantages of our heautoous Pittstoujb of tt}e W«st.

Something New.

A great enterprise for Terre Haute I Gas generated from water Professional and scientific gentlemen, also enterprising men of

capital,

are respectfully in

vited to call at the Terre Haute House this evening, at 7 o'clock, to examine in practical operation a portable Hydro Carbon Gas Machine, producing gas at one third the cost of coal gas, and giving 100 per cent, more light with the same size burner. Territorial rights are fast being disposed of to the most cautious and prudent business men in the Northern, Middle and Southern States. Call and examine what is destined to gi^e light to forty millions of people.

HOWARD TILDEN,

Patentee and Proprietor.

SPECIAL SESSION.

The Council resolved to hold a special session Saturday night for the purpose of receiving bids for the improvement of Ninth street.

The Council then adjourned.

The Minstrels.

The largest audience of the season assembled at the grand Opera House, last evening, to witness the performances of the far-famed Waguer's Minstrels.

The troupe, in part, had been here before, and had left a good impression on the public mind, which had not been obliterated when the announcement of the re-appearance of the company was made

Last night the company well sustained their previously made reputation, though we must confess they did not in all respects, as there was a painful lack of originality and a surplus of vulgarity of both action and language. The company was not so much to blame as the audience, however.

The minstrel business is not altogether unlikepther business in the matter of demand and supply. If an audience signifies its appreciation of vulgar language and actions, of course, the performers will endeavor to please, hence repeat the offense. The performers are paid to please the patrons of the proprietor of the show, and they ever do their level best to please, because it increases their salaries as performers. But aside from these vulgarities, Wagner's Minstrels performed well, and gave general satisfaction—and in fact, evidently did in this respect as well—and whenever they return to our city will doubtless be liberally patronized.

NOTHING of note occurred in any of the courts to-day, except in the Criminal Court, where Patrick White was sent to the penitentiary for two years, disfranchised ant} fined $5, by a jury of his countrymen, fof having stolen $5 ffgpp. Thomas Shannon, em th? nth inst.

J. P. Brennan & Co., Merchant Tailors, Ohio street, have no high rents to pay, do their own cutting, and can sell for IS per cent, less than other houses. Call and see theirstock. 16d6

Onr competitors were not surprised when we opened our Terre Haute store more than two years since, that we should, at the outset, do a very large business. But they confidently asserted that it would all be over with us in less than six months. They have uot yet stopped woudering why that did not turn out to be the case. They will never satisfactorily explain to themselves how it was that a single firm unknown to our citizens proved itself not only able to beai up against their combined assaults, but also to steadily and largely increase its business, mouth after month and jear after year. Our sales during the present month will largely exceed those of any previous month in the history of our store. We do not think there are any three retail Dry Goods stores in Terre Haute, whose combined sale3 would equal our sales of last week. Friends let the good work go on. We are crowding in the goods by the car load, and each installment seems if impossible more attractive than the fo-mer one. Prices probably at the lowest point now, and a reaction may set in that will carry the market up again. "NV© advise our friends to buy their Fall Goods at once.
