or municipal rour.t news
to-day. STOVE pipe season, the maddest of the year, is at hand.
THE waters of the Wabash ripple gently o'er their sandy bed.
IT seems like the olden time to see Mr, Voorhees in the court room.
A TERRE HAUTE lady of taste fell in love with Forepaugli's gorilla yesterday.
THE minstrels at the graud Opera House this evening will makeyou laugh.
THE minstrel band favored our citizens with some very excellent street music this afternoon.
READ the GAZETTE dispatches, as furnished by Manager Rhiele of the Pacific & Atlantic.
THE sere and yellow leaf season has blown in, and the sere and yellow leaves are blowing down quite rapidly.
SEVERAL Terre Haute bloods admired the scarlet clothes of Jose Mansfield yesterday, and yet they were not happy.
BRAZIL is to have a temperance paper, to be established by Messrs. Earle& Cassell. Such a publication is needed there.
THE slate roof of the old gas works having been recently removed, a temporary roof of p.'anks now adorn the old building.
REMEMBER Miss Raridon's grand millinery opening day. That magnificent establishment will bo in fine feather at that date.
MR. GRANT'S paper euters a timely complaint as to the unfitness of the county jail, as a place in which to incarcerate cattle.
THEState Sentinel has the authority of Governor Baker for the statement that the Legislature of Indiana will be convened Nov. 12th.
DISHON looks forward to one of the busiest of seasons for the bill posters business, of which he is the acknowledged head in Iudiana.
IN another column will be found a notice from the Indianapolis Journal of Wagner's Minstrels, who appear in this city this evening.
CIVIL Circuit Court is in sessiou today, the Hon. C. Y. Patterson presiding. Nothing of general interest is transpiring therein, however.
HENDERSON & DELANO, Ball & King, Smith & Wheeler, and other Terre Haute stove dealers, are doing a lively business in that line.
IRA DELANO, ESQ., we are pleased to state, is now able to assist iu the arduous duties of managing the stove store of Henderson & Delano.
THEY are to have a short horn convention at Indianapolis on the 27th of November. Breeders of short horn cattle in this vicinity will take notice.
HENDRICKS and Hopkins are elected without a shadow of ,|«mhl. Quite a number of stakes have been surrendered by consent of the betters on Browne.
BERNARD, the billiardist, smiled sweetly last afternoon as be directed the putting up of a number of magnificeut billiard tables at the Teutonia Hotel Hall.
WE are in possession of some racy correspondence between Fowler, the phrenologist, and Lewis, one of his phonographic reporters, It is a pl^iu eavse of "diapiond cut dlajnond.''
Not a Miser.
We, this noon, received a call from Mr. David M. Evaus, of Alliance, Ohio, who assures us that we were in part mistaken in our notice of his deceased brother, Thomas It. Evans, in our issue of yesterday. He assured us that hisdeceased relative had but $4,300, altogether that the whereabouts of his (deceased) wife is at present unknown, but that arrangements are being perfected for her discovery, when the amount left by her husband will be forwarded her that deceased wa3 never miserly that he was noted for acts of liberality. Being a hard-working mail and never indulging in dissipation or extravagance of any character, he Kucceeded in accumulating the amount specified above, but no more, as was erroneously stated through these columns.
The trunk was opened in the presence of some eight or ten men, we are informed by Mr. George Wight, one of the number, and the above amount was all that was found, according to the statement of Mr. AV. and others who accompanied the brother of deceased to the GAZETTE office to-day.
We know that we had no intention of misrepresenting the facts in the case, and are satisfied that there was no intentional misrepresentation on the part of those to whom we were indebted for the information contained in the notice published in the GAZETTE of yesterday. Pittsburg papers having published the former will please publish this statement as well, that both sides of the story may be heard.
1 he A. I'. A. and P. & A. T. Co. The American Press Association is becoming more and more successful in collecting and disseminating news by the Pacific & Atlantic Telegraph line, each month. But a short time since, the Associated Press and the Western Union Telegraph Company controlled the transmission and publication of news, as our readers are well aware. So rigid were the rules of the monopoly in favor of tho.se who were already in the association that a new paper could hardly be established. The GAZETTE, however, did come into life despite this monopoly, and to-day lives a monument to persevering industry, as do the St. Louis Globe, the Chicago Mail and News, Philadelphia Bulletin, New York Evening Mail, and other sprightly publications, all of which represent the life and enterprise of the cities where they are issued. The Ameri can Press Association and the Pacific Atlantic Telegraph have been of great benefit to the patrons of newspapers in tin's city, as well as elsewhere, for had it not been for the GAZETTE getting these dispatches, people would have been obliged to wait for election news from morning to morning. Long live the A P. A. and the P. & A. T. Co.
ONE of our best and most appreciated exchanges is the St. Louis Globe, not withstanding its execrable politics, which favor the Administration first, last and all the time. In general typographical appearance it is par excellence, and in all departments it is managed with singular ability. Its large corps of editorial writers and reporters is composed of experienced and energetic young men, who knowing their duty never fail to do it.
The Globe came into being under the unfavorable auspices of having to compote with long established and powerful competitors, the management of which deniedj it the privilige of the Associated Press dispatches. Yet, under all these disadvantages, the Globe still lives, and having attained a merited large circulation and advertisement patronage will live and flourish as it fulfills its destiny
THE New York Post, a reluctant sup porter of the Grant Dynasty, says "It is the misfortune of Grant's administration, rather than Grant's fault, that the influence of the class of politicians to which Morton belongs had gained ascendancy in it, and it was to get rid of such men and eradicate such an element in the political affairs of the nation that the Re form movement of last year was started and acquired strength. There area good many people in Indiana who, as politicians, do not like the Morton faction, and still others who believe that it is a part of that corrupt element in our national politics which may, if not destroyed, prove our national ruin."
Mr. Bryant's young men, for once in their lives, stumbled into the facts in a plain case.
THE Indianapolis Journal concedes the election of Hendricks and of Hopkins as follows
The majority for Mr. Hendricks will be botween i,000 and 1,100, and that of Mr. Hopkins, Superintendent of ^hblic Instruction, about 1000 greater.
As a sequel to this announcement, the Journal raises a dismal whinning over the fact that Mr. Browne's intemperate record defeated him, avowing that the Radical party will stand by him even in defeat. That party usually stands by the intemperate.
BISMARCK and his suite were very creditable attractions at the Forepaugh exhibition yesterday, though we cannot say so much for Josie Mansfied and her suitors and the last supper. The representation of Josie and her fellows was not of the most moral-elevating when taken in connection with the history of the group aud the representation of the sacred twelve, seated at the last supper, was downright blasphemy and should not receive the countenance of Christians.
TJIE
JZrprcss, for two months past, maligned Thomas A. Hendricks without regard to tacts or the proprieties of life. The result is that Mr. H. has been chosen Governor of the groat State of Indiana.— Journal. 'Mr. Hendricks might not have been elected, notwithstanding the abuse of Mr. Grant's paper, had the editor thereof not taken the stump, and thus reached the ears of a class of voters who never read the sheet over which he presides.
A PROMINENT pastor, who attended the museum and menagerie, yesterday, admired the elephant, but jnstly condemned the blasphemous representation of the apostolic dozen, on the case that enclosed which was a placard for the benefit all ministers and other moralizers, announcing that if the employees who profaned, would be discharged sumnoarialy.
MAJOR SMITH, one of the editors, and S. B. Henderson, business manager of our Printing House Square cotemporary, are off duty, the former at Cincinnati and, thfe latter in New York.
THE Liberals and Democrats of Indianapolis will jollify over the election of Heudricks and Hopkius to-morrow uight. Messrs. Hendricks and Voorhees, among many others, are announced as speakers on the occasion.
A LETTER was received in this city from Hon. H. D. Scott, last evening. The Seuator and wife, when the letter was written, were off the coast of Ireland. Mr. S. had been quite sea sick during a great part of the voy :ge, but was recovering.
