lively locals, iu local

TO-DAY decides the fate of millions yet unborn. Don't it?

THE Marshall Herald says that the Vaudalia railroad needs another track.

MR. GRANT'S criminal lawyer, J. W. Gordon, howled at a very meagre audience last night.

IT is said that there is au abundance of various kinds of nuts, in the woods adjacent to the city.

MARSHALL has a new brass band— and is, of course, becoming rapidly depopulated. Even the cats have been scared away.

A NOTICE to contractors in regard to work on the Indiana Division of the C., D. & V. K. li. will be found in our local notice columns.

P. SHANNON, ESQ., was offering large bets yesterday afternoon, and giving rewards to those who would take them or find those who would do so.

THE Tuscola Ban d, though it has been" in existence as an organization but six short months made a mighty good impression on our streets yesterday.

C. M. ALLEN, ESQ., and E. P. Beauchamp will leave the city to-night 011 the midnight train, en route West, whither they go on a buffalo and bear hunt.

TO-MORROW, with Radical county candidates, will be the saddest of the year in fact their ears will droop and their optics look down as they contemplate the disaster of defeat.

THERE was some lively betting on our streets yesterday afternoon but last night when the Radicals had their grand torchlight procession to enthuse them they would risk but little if any.

ONE very intelligent Grantite from the rural districts labored under the impression, last night, that Mattoon is an Indiana city. He labored under other and more serious delusions, we fear.

MR. THOMAS A. ANDERSON, cashier of Shannon's bank, has placed several lots on the market. They are located near his new residence oil Fourteenth street, and are offered at reasonable rates.

THOSE of our readers who want to get the election returns to-night can do so by applying to the Pacific & Atlantic Telegraph office, Main street. Young llheilo, the manager, can accommodate tlu m.

Miss RAKJDON, of the magnificent Main street, marble front millinery establishment will, on Wednesday of next week, open out for inspection and ^ale her spleudid stock in store. See local notice columns for particulars.

ALL quiet at the polls to-day. An immense vote is beto£ polled, the lame, the halt and the bliivt of both parties being hauled out to exercise the great right of American citizens. Many who are not blind, visionally, we fear are going it blind to-day.

MR. GRANT'S Terre Haute paper insists that his offloe seekers in this municipality are of the ablest, pa rest and best. We shall soon see what a most intelligent OQBjWunJty has tp $t. Publio opinion, as expressedjjtfarou Wo a a

(WANT'S STREET SHOW.

His GejcftrnJ, His Lawyer and His Pastor Hiirrangiieand Disperse the Mulfitodan —His Hero of Bull J*ua Appeareth Not.

Last evening was fully demonstrated what can be accomplished by Radical greenbacks and a large corps of energetic drummers and soups who work for pay or position, under direction of experi euced wire-pullers, whose efforts iu the past have been crowned with success. Four brass bauds were hired and brought here from abroad, cheap fare trains were run over the many roads centering here, Administration money remunerating the companies for the difference in paying rates, and those charge.!.

Those who came iu from abroad, were numbered by the thousands, and boys, as well as men, were anxious to participate in the glittering gorgeousuess of a political parade through the streets of a beautiful city. In consequence of these favorable 'circumstances, added to the auspiciousness of the atmosphere and the settled condition of the dust, made the success of the torch-light demonstration of last night, second to none that ever occurred in this section of the country. Indeed, the display was grandly magnificent. Long lines of torches blazed through the streets and glittering rockets pierced the air in every direction, lighting up the darkness of the heavens with the brilliancy of day, all furnishing ample food for reflection to those who felt that their money had been made usejof to get up the beauteous pageant, some of whom doubtless sadly elected that their money had much better have been appropriated to the need of their famishing families than to gratifying the vanity of the officeholders and officeseekers of the land.

Be this as it may, we repeat that the demonstration pleased the eye and charmed the ear of the thousands of beholders and hearers who thronged the streets a3 the vast procession moved by to the music of brass bands, fifes and kettle drums, and the miscellaneous howling, yelling and screaching of the men, boys and babies who constituted the heterogeneous mass of humanity that surged and seethed through the principle thoroughfares of the great city of Terre Haute.

But after this part of the demonstration had subsided there was a lull in the storm, among the thousands congregated in and around about the junction of Sixth and Ohio, where S. R. Baker had his pyrotecnic stand constructed, and from which the fiery rocket ascended and the cerulian calcium light3 illuminated everything within a radius of hundreds of yards. When the fire-works part of the programme had ended, lo, there went out on to the still night air the voices of Col. Osborne, from the Wigwam, Major Gordon from the Linton Block, and Rev. Curry from a carriage in front of the National Hotel.

Public speaking ever beiug a signal for a Radical stampede, there was apanij of course, and in less time than it takes to describe it, the vast multitude had dispersed and naught was heard but the roaring raving of Gordon, who proceeded to the denunciation of Mr. Hendricks and a piteons appeal in behalf of his client Mr. Grant, who is now on trial before a jnry of the American people for acts of omission and commission against the good name and fair fame of the Republic and the voice of Rev. Curry, who launched forth his doctrine of univeral salvation here and hereafter for all who will but vote for Mr. Grant as President and the whole Radical ticket from A to izzard and the bold billingsgate of Osborne, as he hurled administrative anathema at those of the Republican party in the past who have a sufficiency of independence and freedom from party despotism to cherish and express the sentiments of their hearts, and vote as they feel. These, we, say were the only sounds heard in the vicinity of Sixth and Ohio streets when the great attraction of torch lights and pyrotecnics passed away. The hero of Bull

Run having spoken to a slim audience in the afternoon, had returned to his little bed in dire disgust, meanwhile, and not being serenaded, his valorous voice was not heard from the balcony of the National Hotel, as was anticipated.

Sad Accident.

It is with sad that we chronicle a very painful accident to Mr. James O'Mara, Deputy City Marshal. Yesterday afternoon late he was driving about the city in his buck-board, trying to preserve order when his horse becoming frightened and unmanagable, ran away, throwing the occupant violently to the ground, breaking one of his legs, causing the unfortunate man much suffering, though it is thought he will not lose the use of the injured limb, as it was carefully set by skillfull surgeons. Mr. O'Mara is a most efficient officer, and the accident seems a public calaranity as well as a private misfortune.

THE Radicals of Praireton, fearing that they had not daughters enough to decorate the wagon that participated in the procession last night, invited the daughters of several Democrats to take part, which was a'ccepted. After they were seated and it was observed that there were enough Radically inclined girls present, the Democratic were rather rudely treated. In consequence of this rudeness, one of the gentlemen, responsible for it, came very near going through some evolutions pecular to a certain German acrobatic association suggestive of the name of the offender.

THE tickets vottd to-day are of so interminable length aud the scratching so great, that it is impossible to arrive at any adequate idea as to result, up to the time we go to press and we very much doubt if the accurate count will have been made and reported before the GAZETTE is issued to-morrow afternoon, when we think we shall be able to present our readers with the result of the returns throughout the district aud the State not only, but also the returns from the other States that vote to-day.

A LATE number of the Mattoon Journal favors a colli hearted public with a learned dissertation on "how to love truly." The editor thinks he knows how it is himself but in view of the fact that he has been married hut a very short time we would suggest tbat he/ is not yet out of the Woods,

Last week was the banner week for 1872. Our sales were beyond all precedent. We think they more than equaled the sales of any two other houses in our line of business in the city. These evidences of the growing popularity of our firm are very gratifying to lis. We give our business our closestattention, we aim to treat all well and all alike, and we never put up our goods a single cent of profit more than is necessary, and we rejoice to know that our efforts in all these particulars are appreciated by our citizens. Continue to give us your support, and we will do even more for Terre Haute in the future than we have iu the past. FOSTER BROTHERS.
