MONDAY, OCTOBER 7, 1872.
City and Neighborhood.
THERE was a fair attendance at the Teachers' Institute, to-day.
MR. FRANK MCKEKN will accompany J. H. Hager, Esq., to Europe, we understand.
WE heard a Radical say, "the negroes will save us." We thought, what a salvation.
THE negroes were out to-day, in all their native loveliness and delightful fragrance.
SENATOR WILSON had not thousand to hear him this Monstrous enthusiasm.
I
over two afternoon.
BEAUCHAMP & PUGH are driving a lively livery business, and increasing their custom each day.
TWELVE car loads of Suckers, besides hundreds who came on horseback, joined in the procession to-day.
THE bet of $100 on Hendricks over Browne was taken by Mr. Boudinot, of Rockville, this noon. Next.
THE Availing and howlings of Mr. Grant's Terre Haute paper were pitiful, though terrific, this morning.
DR. ROBERTS, of this city, and C. F. Boudinot, Esq., of Rockville, have $100 wagered on Hendricks and Browne.
.The darkies and the Suckers are the chief element of strength in the demonstration to-day. How we apples swim
THE Hon. Henry Wilson was the guest of the Hon. Richard Thompson at his magnificent mansion over Sunday and last night.
As WE go to press, the Radicals are enjoying public speaking in the hot sun at the old Court House squar|. Full par ticulars to-morrow.
J. B. HEDDEN & William E. Hendrich have been selected as judges of the Second Ward polls, Dr. VanValzah, inspector, and William C. Ball, clerk.
THE Radicals will have a big blow-out to-night if energetic work from slaves to party despotism, and plenty of greenbacks can accomplish the result.
TO-DAY demonstrates what can be accomplished with money to-morrow will demonstrate what can be accomplished with the ballots of Tree men.
TIIE crowd at the Court House square this afternoon, was about equal in numbers to what assembled around one of the three places of speaking on Saturday evening.
WE regret our inability to be present at. the Temple, Saturday night when we learn the Hon. U. F. -Linder, addressed in an able an eloquent manner thousands of people.
THE Mattoon and Tuscola bands are both in attendance at the grand Hoosier demonstration in this city to-day. The Grantites have plenty of money, but are lacking for men.
MR. A. X. HAMILTON, editor of that sterling Greeley publication, the Leavenworth Commercial, is in the city on a short visit taking observations of the situation in Indiana.
THE gentlemen from Africa, it is said, claim the place of honor in the procession this evening. They can get anything they want now. "Fathers save us from uegro husbands."
SOMEsly thief went through the money drawer of Strong} the grocer, to the amount of $J23, Saturday nfght. Mr, etjbng is seacfibing yigprqusly for a eqitf.
TJT.S
A Last Word.
Democrats and Liberals, goto the polls early, remaiu late, and do your whole duty, but resort to no violence, either of action or language. Act well your part as freemen and gentlemen, and all will be well. Let every man of you who enjoys the right of suffrage, and is entitled to a vote, exercise that greatest privilege of an American citizen, and cast his vote fwr the whole ticket for this must be done to further the movement and insure a victory over Radicalism in November. Let those who have beein chosen as challengers see that our opposition get no illegal ballots into the box, while the members ot the
rallying
committees see
to it that every vote in favor of the Lib-eral-Democratic State, Judicial, county and entire ticket be cast.
With these last words, we are willing to trust the result of the momentou3 issues of the campaign now drawing to a close.
The Jng-liaudle Organ.
Mr. Grant's Terre Haute jug-handle paper fittingly closed its vigorous campaign of lies by one long, protracted howl, this morning. Among other things known by everybody who know the facts in the premises, to be untrue, it says
Messrs. Yoorhecs, McLean, Wendling and Clay spoke from the Terre Haute House balcony. With the exception of Col. McLean, all of them devoted most of their time to vituperation, hitting "the nigger" a mean lick at every step.
Now, we did not hear Mr. Voorhees' speech, relying on others for what we today say regarding it but as for the speeches of Messrs. Clay and Wendling, we did hear them, and they appear in our columns of this issue. We refer our readers to the speeches of these gentlemen for a refutation of the villainous lies promulgated by Mr. Grant's vile organ.
WE understand on good authority, that a certain Radical—whose name we could not learn—approached our estimable fel-low-citizen, Samuel Merry, Esq., at the depot, about 4 o'-clock this morning and pointed out two men to him whom the C. R. said would vote all right on Tuesday if he (Mr. Merry) would take care of them and keep them over, or words to that effect. Mr. Merry's characteristic and noble reply was that when he wanted to go into such disreputable business he would advertise for it. This was overheard by parties not distant.
$50 Reward.
ROOMS DEM. STATE CENTRAL COM. INDIANAPOLIS, October 7, 1872. In view of the heavy importation of negroes from other States for the purpose of fraudulent voting, I offer a reward of $50 for every negro arrested and convicted of fraudulent voting in any election precinct in the State at the election to-morrow. E. S. ALVORD.
Chairman Democratic State Cen. Com.
Illinois Loose.
The Grantites of Illinois are very kind to send such immense delegations to assist their Radical brethren of this city out of their dejected dilemma. Had not our neighboring State poured out its thousands, the demonstration to-day and to-night would have been a laughable failure. The suckers can march, but they cannpt yote here.
THB able speech of Hon. James Lynch at Terre Haute last night knocked one of the principal props from under Dan. Voorhees. It is generally conceded that Lynch is much the best speaker ot the two.—Indianapolis Evening Journal.
Mr. Voorhees did not measure his oratorical abilities by those of Mr. Lynch, but Mr. Grant's Secretary of the Treasury did, and was distanced in fact, the Secretary was white-washed, but not for the first time.
WE will have to abandon our idea of convincing the public that Mr. Boutwell made a good argumentive speech in support of Lis financial position, the other evening. The general impression prevails, even among many Radicals, that the speech was a most signal failure. Our apology is that we tried to bolster the speech up, because of our respect for the office and not the encumbent.
THOSE who want full election returns from the various States voting to-mor-row, as early as to-morrow night, until after midnight can be accommodated at the office of the Pacific & Atlantic Telegraph, near the Central Book Store. The GAZETTE will contain all the returns taken at night, the forenoon, and afternoon of the following day.
FROM the best information we could I get from various sources, Democratic, Liberal and Radical, there were in the procession on Saturday night, 1,793 torches, 108 of which were carried by horsemen. There were present all along the line of march and subsequently at the speaking, thousands and thousands of people.
^MISS EVA FISCHER'S speech of Saturday night, in presenting the flag to Fayette towuship, was well written, notwithstanding the fact that she had but a very short time in which to prepare it, and but a little time in which to commit it to memory. She is a young lady of great promise.
ILLINOIS has turned out splendidly to assist the Grantites in their demonstration to-day and this evening. That is all right, but the Suckers must not stay over until to-morrow, and attempt to further assist their radical friends at the ballot box. The penitentiary lies just in that direction.
WE relied on getting the manuscript of the Early Grove speech of Hon. Gratz Brown, and did not take a phronographic report thereof, on account of pressing editorial duties, hence we are short a report of his remarks for the reason that he departed from his usual custom, and spoke extempore. *f I A.
So far as procession by day light is concerned, the Rads to-day ran' the thing in the grouud. We will see what they can do after dark, and as most of their deeds are done in the dark, we would not be surprised if they would have a hig thing.
THE attention of Radical County Candidates who will surely suffer defeat tomorrow, apd will want to drown thejr sorrow in drink, is hergby called to tho firit'Olwa ®tocfc of the beverage
